Macross Release?

So now that the 2 Frontier Movies are coming to theaters, is there any news on when/if , there will be a dvd/blu ray release, for not just Frontier, but Macross in general?

Re: Macross Release?

Not yet. I'd assume the news will be forthcoming the closer we get to the anniversary events in the final quarter of this year.

For whatever reason, Big West always seems to want to do its anniversary stuff in autumn and winter.

Seemingly only in selected theaters in the United States.

Re: Macross Release?

It's a Fathom Events release... two separate limited engagements, one for each Frontier movie.

If we are talking about Macross releases - anything on horizon regarding previous shows being released outside of Japan? Any news at all?

Releases in the PRC and SE Asia are reportedly going well, though those started a year or so ago.

No official word on releases to streaming or home video in English speaking territories at this time. We're all kind of expecting the news to come in Q3 or Q4 2022, since Big West inevitably tends to put its anniversary events towards the end of the year.

Re: Macross Release?

Big West has announced it's going to be releasing Blu-rays of Macross II, Macross Plus, Macross Frontier, and Macross Delta in the US soon.

Due to pre-existing licenses, the releases are divided up a bit. Macross Plus will be coming via Anime Ltd., Macross II via AnimEigo, and the rest via RightStuf.

Okay, well I'll keep an eye out, and I'm definitely gonna be picking up Frontier as soon as I can.

Macross 7 has also been confirmed on the list of "Coming Soon" releases to home video in the west.

No word yet on Macross Zero, Macross Dynamite 7, Macross 7: the Galaxy is Calling Me!, Macross FB7, Macross: Do You Remember Love?, or Macross: Flash Back 2012.

Re: Macross Release?

Well, if nothing else, the Macross Frontier: Labyrinth of Time short film should be interesting.

As big a mess as Macross Delta's story has been, my hopes aren't high for the final installment of that chapter in the series.

Re: Macross Release?

It's possible the film could fix things somewhat. The Reconguista in G movies actually improved on the tv series, granted they retold the entire story, so that may be why.

Macross Delta: Passionate Walkure was a single-film recap of the entire TV series story.

Macross Delta: Absolute Live!!!!!! is an all-original story that, from the reviews and recaps I've read from fans who were able to see it in Japan, was still kind of a complete mess.

Granted, Passionate Walkure was a good deal more enjoyable than the Macross Delta TV series... but not because of reworks to its story. It's more enjoyable because the plot is CONSIDERABLY cut-down to fit the feature film runtime. The process of selectively cutting to make the story fit the two hour runtime alotted to it meant that most of the evidence of the TV anime's flaws ended up on the cutting room floor. With new dogfight scenes, the dull and repetitive fights from the series where nobody used any maneuver except The Scissors are largely gone. Interactions with the secondary cast were significantly pared down so that most of them don't have enough screentime to reveal they have exactly one character trait beyond the type of fanservice they cater to. It wasn't so much that the film is materially better, it just offers Macross Delta's weak writing less time to annoy. The moments intended to introduce some dramatic tension fall hilariously flat. Especially Messer's movie death, where he dodges the shot that killed him in the series... then immediately proceeds to die anyway from the strain Var syndrome put on his body.
Spoiler
One of the biggest problems with Macross Delta as a whole is that its cast is the biggest in Macross history and the show is only one season long so there isn't enough time to develop all, or even most, of them. Macross 7 was the closest to it in cast size, but it had twice as much time to develop its cast thanks to a 49 episode main run, 1 unaired episode, 2 extra episodes, an omake series, and a TV movie.

With Walkure being a five-member idol group, Delta Flight having five pilots so each member of Walkure had a personal bodyguard, and the Aerial Knights having six pilots plus a commander, the core cast of the series was just too damned big to develop them all properly. The only ones who got properly developed were Freyja, Hayate, Mirage, Keith, and Roid. Everyone else had one, maybe two, character traits that were the basis of every last scene they were in, making them so unremarkable that you almost want to ask "Who are you, again?" every time they show up. It's made even worse that for some of them, their one character trait is purely Informed Ability. Reina is allegedly a super-hacker, but the only time she ever successfully hacks something is when the group she was hacking allowed her to succeed as part of a trap. Every other time she tries, she's caught and arrested almost immediately... including in her backstory, that being how she was forced into working for Xaos in the first place. For bonus irony, that portion of backstory is presented in a narrated flashback while she's sitting in the brig after failing to hack a simple electronic lock aboard the medical ship.
Absolute Live!!!!!! sounds like kind of a slog, TBH. It picks up after the war, the new antagonist is another private military group who immediately Worfs the Aerial Knights to show they mean business (admittedly, their top ace is now Bogue, a third-rate background character, so it isn't really that impressive even if you overlook that both sides in the previous movie are third-rate powers in-setting), and wipes the floor with Delta Flight's Siegfried customs so they can justify having a new DX Chogokin Valkyrie toy. The plot is about one half recycled from Macross Frontier, and the other half recycled from Macross Plus, that seems to have as its only draw the ridiculously underwhelming fate of the Megaroad-01.
Spoiler
The new enemy is Heimdall, a private military company that wants to hunt down and arrest Lady M for her corrupt involvement in government and military affairs and her repression of various technological advances. For some reason, despite the fact that Lady M is explicitly acknowledged to be an interstellar criminal conducting banned-by-treaty cloning experiments and costing huge numbers of lives by meddling in the affairs of the NUNS and New UN Gov't, this is presented as if it was a bad thing. Their trump cards are a rebuilt Battle Galaxy (apparently the punched-in-half one that was sunk in the TV anime version of Frontier) and the Siren Delta System, which can be described entirely as "Sharon Apple 2.0". They want to go find the Megaroad-01 because that's where they believe Lady M is... and it's just been stuck in a fold fault for the last half-century.

Re: Macross Release?

I'm probably going avoid spoilers and still check these out when they finally get an international release, if nothing else the battle scenes should be cool. However there were so many issues with Delta (not the least of which being it was kind of dull and underwhelming at times, particularly when it came to the infrequent battle scenes) that a recap movie couldn't save it. The other recap movie took a series that was great to start with , streamlined the story naturally, and improved the animation. Also given the lackluster ending of the series, hopefully the movie offers a bit more closure.

I'm kind of dreading Macross Delta: Absolute Live!!!!!!... not just because of the incredibly lame answer to one of the franchise's oldest mysteries, but because Macross Delta's protagonists get upstaged in their own freaking movie by a guest character who wasn't even in the series.
Spoiler
Not only do both Delta Flight and the Aerial Knights get Worf'd by the Siren Delta System and its Sv-303 Vivasvast unmanned fighters, the help they get afterwards is Max. Max, who has retired from the New UN Forces and apparently joined Xaos for... reasons? Max, who is now equipped with a YF-29, meaning he's not just a way better pilot than Delta Flight or the Aerial Knights, he's flying a way more powerful Valkyrie too.
