I think its more like HG only has power in the US compared to EU and Asia... Big West just had to fight them for the IP in EU....

Re: The Official Macross Delta Anime Thread Mk I

I don't think Harmony Gold has any authority to prevent Macross from being in SRW games, since those are JP made games.

I also don't think they can prevent any Macross included SRW game being made in English to come out in Asia either. Delta seems likely to come out in the near future for SRW given that SRW usually waits a couple of years after a show is done to be put in a regular SRW game (not including the gacha game, Cross Omega for that list)

Something like that.

The short-term implications for Harmony Gold aren't very big, but this marks another erosion of the value of that license renewal to Macross's original series that Harmony Gold paid through the nose for. Eventually, they'll reach the point where their diminishing ability to keep from having to directly compete with Macross on an even playing field and the continuing decline of the Robotech fanbase will price the renewal of that license to Super Dimension Fortress Macross out of their reach... or at least out of their ability to cost-justify it.

Harmony Gold was REALLY counting on growing its brand in the PRC, since it's kind of outlived its novelty in much of the rest of the world. News that Big West had shot down their trademarks there and struck a licensing deal to distribute ALL of Macross except the original series must've hurt like a half-brick to the head.

Pretty much. The way US trademark laws are written, they greatly favor Harmony Gold because they favor the first user of a mark in the market over the actual owner of the property. Outside the US, Harmony Gold is in a much worse situation since trademark law in most of the rest of the world favor's the property's owner instead.

HG might have an advantage in South America... if only anyone actually legitimately bought their sh*t there. If you thought China was #1 in copyright infringement, think again. Studies conducted on internet usage down in South America have suggested more than half of the 223 million internet users in South America engage in video, audio, and multimedia piracy and a fair percentage of them even pirate their local cable TV.

However, with the all-important markets for things like theatrical films being the US, UK, China, Japan, and Western Europe... well, you can see where Harmony Gold might feel the noose is tightening around their necks. They could never sell in Japan, and their grip on the UK, China, and Western Europe is breaking.

I was just sent a copy of the opposition hearing doc B002959008 by e-mail. It's written in Italian too, so it's not all that helpful unless you've got someone to translate. One of the more annoying parts about government patent and trademark office websites is that they're often set up so that you can't direct-link search results. Why, I don't know...

Super Robot Wars games usually aren't sold outside Japan, IIRC, due to the complicated licensing problems involved in having so many titles crossing over with each other. HG doesn't really get a say in what goes on in a Japanese game, because they have no rights to anything in Japan. Even the company they license from, Tatsunoko Production, doesn't have the domestic (JDM) merchandising rights to any Macross title.

If it were being sold internationally, then HG could have a post-facto say by threatening to sue for infringement of their exclusive (outside-Japan) merchandising rights to the original Macross series and DYRL, but none of the others.

I have heard that China lately had been tightening the noose around copyright violators, partly because they want to appear to be as a more "legitimate" market for international firms.

Anyway, with the death of Syd Mead, I suddenly want to ask if Kawamori has any apprentice/protege in mechanical design. He reaches 60 the next year. Maybe it is time for he to find someone whom he can entrust his future works with?

Lately, China's government has been getting increasingly panicky about its increasingly sluggish economic growth, the increase in scrutiny and legal action against Chinese-made counterfiet products, the loss of trust stemming from their various attempts at corporate espionage, and the international outrage over the Hong Kong situation and their various other violations of human rights. They're trying to put out so many different fires all at once that their damage control efforts are becoming increasingly knee-jerk denialist, and each ill-considered move they make only draws increasingly large amounts of attention to what they're trying to sweep under the rug. I think this token effort to enforce copyright and trademark protections like they're supposed to have been doing all along is one panic-stricken maneuver that the government hopes will prevent an exodus of businesses from China.

I'm sure you've probably heard that Bandai's been pursuing a number of Chinese gunpla bootleggers, Hasbro's lawyers have also been going after China-based Transformers toy bootleggers, and so on. A lot of the smaller bootlegging outfits are based in Hong Kong, which should have really interesting implications for any legal action and attempts at criminal prosecution.

It'll be interesting to see what becomes of China's own homebrewed ripoffs like their Macross Frontier and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED ripoff Astro Plan.

Well, I suppose the question would be does Macross actually NEED a "successor"? It's not like Gundam has suffered much in the absence of Yoshiyuki Tomino... and most fans grossly overestimate how involved Kawamori is in any given Macross series. It's not like he's calling all the shots, or even most of them. He does mechanical design works and he "supervises", meaning he rubber-stamps whatever the production committee puts in front of him.

In terms of replacement mechanical designers, his heir apparent is Hidetaka Tenjin. Tenjin did many of the new design works for Macross the Ride and as you know has been a long-time box artist for Macross model kits. It's also possible Junya Ishigaki might step up, as he's collaborated with Kawamori on designs for the last few shows and did the cockpits for all the CG VFs and the designs for the Octos, Vajra, Macross Quarter, Cheyenne, and EX-Gear.

Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hayao Miyazaki are each 78 and still working, so I don't see any reason why Kawamori would be picking any successors at any time in the next decade or so.

So there is a Macross-ripoff other than Robotech? Now that I have no idea about.

I don't know if it's the same as in America, but here in Vietnam there are quite a good number of Chinese ripoff anime shows being aired on cable (I distinctively remember a G.I Joe ripoff, this one

It's a good thing to know that there are someone who could inherit Kawamori's works, especially Tenjin and Junya. I liked their works with Baldr Force and Victory respectively.

It's Tomino and Miyazaki, two admittedly weirdos of the industry we are talking about. Beside, I have a feeling that we won't see many people of the Mushi generation still doing anime in the coming decade. I have been feeling like so since the death of Monkey Punch and Kazuo Koike.

There've been a few over the years...

The first was a South Korean series from 1983 called Space Gundam V that was made back during a period when Japanese cultural imports were banned in South Korea. The show was a super robot series that stole practically all of its content from elsewhere. The titular super robot was Hikaru's VF-1J from Macross's original series, characters borrowed from elsewhere include Gundam's Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, and Dozle Zabi, and a fair amount of stuff from the story of Brave Raideen.

After the success of Macross Frontier in 2008, Chinese toy firm Xing Yuan produced a 26 episode series that was "strongly inspired" by both Macross Frontier and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, though they also ripped off some character designs from Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and a fair chunk of the plot from Space Battleship Yamato. It had its own "original" mechanical designs, but the "Type Yi" fighters were very obviously modeled closely on the VF-25 Messiah and VF-1 Valkyrie but are based on the real world Chengdu J-10 and Shenyang J-11, and the ship they sortie from looks suspiciously like the Archangel. Two members of the main cast look suspiciously like Lockon Stratos and Tieria Erde, and five of the six Type Yi fighters are obviously borrowing their paintjobs, resembling respectively, Alto's VF-25F, Michael's VF-25G, Ozma's VF-25S, Allelujah's Kyrios, and Luca's RVF-25. Only unit 4, which is a garish purple thing, doesn't appear to be borrowing. Xing Yuan's response to accusations of plagiarism was to accuse everyone in the anime industry of plagiarism, with the very strange argument that animation originated in Europe so everyone else who uses animation is a copycat (which apparently makes it ok?). The series was reportedly poorly received even in China, and international attention was only garnered because of what an obvious ripoff it was.

There was a really excellent prank pulled involving Astro Plan in which several Macross fans convinced a large number of Robotech fans (via a dummed-up trailer) that Harmony Gold USA had licensed Astro Plan to add to the Robotech franchise as a new Robotech series. Harmony Gold had to issue a public statement that it had no such plans.

Kawamori, at least, has a fairly cushy job at Satelight that doesn't require him to do much actual work, and they're part of Sankyo so he can eke out a living supervising original animation for pachinko machines in his dotage.

I recently heard a rumor that the name "Macross" came from both the words "Macro" and "Macbeth", the later because its creators envisioned an epic drama?

Eh... sort of?

The original working title was "Battle City Megaroad" when the series was under development. One of the series's producers really wanted to name the titular ship "MacBeth" according to his own personal tastes, and "Macross" ended up being the compromise they settled on.

And so they just use the name "Megaroad" for the SDF-2?

Also, didn't the original Macross had a different designation than "SDF-1"? I wonder why did they change it? And shouldn't the Megaroad had a different serial designation, since it was built completely by human, while the Macross was only rebuilt and refurbished?

I wonder in the years between Plus and Delta, did they do any modernization to the SDF-1 on Earth? We did talk about Earth's tightening its defense after the Sharon Apple incident, the colony war, and the Vajra, right?

Yup... as a nod/injoke referencing the show's original development title.

It was originally punny name based on the interchangeability of L and R sounds in Japanese, referencing both the ship's massive cargo (an entire city, a "mega load") and the long distance it had to travel to get back to Earth (a "mega road").

False Prophet wrote: Sun Jan 19, 2020 10:15 pm Also, didn't the original Macross had a different designation than "SDF-1"? I wonder why did they change it?
None of which I am aware, offhand... in the "making of" notes they always refer to the ship by name only, so it's always down as "Megaroad" until the show was developed to the point of adopting its official title. The designation it got was almost never used in dialog, and appears mainly in set dressing like the flatware of the ship's mess, the ship's crest on Global's floor and the TV studio, etc.

AFAIK, it's never had a designation other than SDF-1. The Daedalus, however, had its designation changed in the official writeups from CLV-111 to SLV-111 over the years.

False Prophet wrote: Sun Jan 19, 2020 10:15 pm And shouldn't the Megaroad had a different serial designation, since it was built completely by human, while the Macross was only rebuilt and refurbished?
Nah. Hull classification symbols are all about a ship's operating role, not its class or construction. So since the SDF-2 was originally intended to be a second ship of the same class and role as the SDF-1 Macross, that it was a human-built ship doesn't matter at all.

Essentially, all a hull classification symbol tells you is what kind of ship you're talking about... the job it was built to do.

It probably should have gotten a different hull classification symbol after it was rebuilt into an emigrant ship, but that's an entirely different matter since it was originally supposed to appear as a second Macross-class ship in the final episode of the TV series. They did a completed design for it (http://www.macross2.net/m3/sdfmacross/sdf2.htm) in the series animation model sheets, but the scenes it was intended for use in were cut during storyboarding due to the show's runtime constraints. So it was mentioned but unseen until Macross: Flash Back 2012 four years later, and that was when they decided to create a different design for the completed ship to reflect its intended role as a city in a ship that was transporting emigrants across the stars. By that point, the designation had stuck.

Several DYRL?-connected publications attempted to retroactively fix the problem by asserting that the Macross itself had originally been intended for interstellar exploration and colonization before it accidentally started a war, which was why it had a much more extensive city section.

Ultimately, the SDF hull classification symbol remains in use by the Megaroad-class emigrant ships while the limited mass production Macross-class ships adopted SDFN as theirs to reflect that they were not emigrant ships but were armed escorts

Yeah, they did some modernization of the ship when they initially rebuilt it c.2011-2012 using parts from the production Macross-class ships being built at the factory satellites in orbit, and on at least one other occasion prior to 2040 in the main Macross timeline.

In the Macross II timeline, the SDF-1 was also rebuilt to the same standard as production ships of her class at some point between the First Space War and the 2054 Zentradi invasion that saw the class discontinued in favor of newer and more advanced warship designs that hybridized Zentradi, Meltrandi, and Human overtechnology to a greater extent.

An interesting article on an unfinished Kawamori and Mikimoto's movie: http://www.zimmerit.moe/maimu-shoji-kaw ... -mikimoto/

Kawamori's fascination to bicycles reminds me of Itano and how he developed the Macross Missile Massacre--tying a bunch of fireworks to the back of his bike and then ignite them, right?

And I have no idea that Kawamori worked on Gunhed.

We have talked about Critical Path somewhere before when talked about General Galaxy, but what is the deal with it. Latence and Vindicare? Kaiba, you said that the events of the war in VF-X2 were orchestrated by Latence and Vindicare, right? How exactly did that happen? (And was it true that one of Max's daughters led one of these organizations?_

Also, is the position of the President of N.U.N.S. largely ceremonial? I know that the fleets have the power to do what ever they want, and that decentralization was created after VF-X2. But even then, letting Howard Glass, the president, to work from Macross Frontier instead of Earth implies to me that said position is something ceremonial.

And, did Macross Galaxy had a regimental standing army, or just mercenaries like S.M.S.? If not, then how did Grace got to be called "Colonel"? She was just a scientist and then Sheryl's manager, right?

... one brief correction, it's Vindirance not Vindicare. Vindicare is one of the Imperium's assassin temples from the Warhammer 40,000 setting. The one specializing in long-distance sniping.

Latence was/is a faction within the New Unification Government and New UN Forces that believed that the gradual decentralization of power and governing authority that was occurring as humanity spread itself across the galaxy was a Very Bad Thing. Essentially, they were a fascist Earth-supremacist movement inside the government and military that believed that humanity's survival depended on forming a united front against all threats foreign and domestic by transferring all governing authority to the central government on Earth and having Earth rule all of the emigrant fleets and planets directly. Highly-placed Latence faction members used their influence over the military to suppress pro-autonomy movements on emigrant planets through military force.

Vindirance was a paramilitary force established and covertly supported by the pro-autonomy faction in the New UN Government and New UN Forces, which was largely composed of emigrant governments and high-ranking military officials of emigrant governments. Their mission was to provide an armed resistance against the Latence faction's attempts to suppress pro-autonomy movements with military force by labeling them terrorists. Some of the pro-autonomy faction felt Vindirance was insufficiently aggressive about its goal and created their own group called Black Rainbow that was much less shy about simply attacking and killing anyone military threats.

Critical Path was a defense and tech industry megacorp that was trying to profiteer off all this in a similar style to Anaheim Electronics, though most of their support was for Latence including creating the Sound Jamming System that made Battle-13 immune to missile attacks and providing a number of experimental mobile weapons similar to Destroids and a Gundam-style Mobile Armor.

False Prophet wrote: Sun Mar 01, 2020 8:51 am [...] How exactly did that happen? (And was it true that one of Max's daughters led one of these organizations?
It is not explicitly confirmed, but Macross Chronicle has strongly implied that Vindirance leader and top ace Mariafokina Barnrose is actually Therese Jenius operating under a paper-thin alias.

Her full name is given in that Macross Chronicle entry as Therese Mariafokina Formula Jenius.

Howard Glass is not the president of the New UN Government.

Howard Glass is the president of the Macross Frontier fleet government, which sometimes styles itself as just the "Frontier Government". Different fleets organize their local governments along different lines, but Howard Glass occupies essentially the same level of local authority that Mayor Milia F. Jenius did in Macross 7, or that his brother Mayor Serge Glass does in Macross the Musiculture. He's only a president because the fleet gov't is organized differently. Macross Galaxy is an extreme example given that it's actually run by (and as) a corporation rather than having an elected government.

Yes, the Macross Galaxy emigrant fleet has the Macross Galaxy Corporate Army.

Because the Macross Galaxy corporation is the Macross Galaxy emigrant fleet's de facto government, they are both a private military force and the fleet local government force operating under the auspices of the New UN Forces.

If you look at the VF-27 Lucifers used by the Macross Galaxy fleet, you'll notice they carry both their fleet gov't insignia AND New UN Spacy markings.

Re: The Official Macross Delta Anime Thread Mk I

One thing I should mention about the whole Latence-Vindirance kerfuffle is that both groups were astonishingly well-connected...

The Latence faction's supporters inside the New UN Government and New UN Forces were influential enough for them to have the elite New UN Spacy VF-X Special Forces squadrons (incl. the 727th Independent Squadron VF-X Ravens) do their dirty work suppressing the pro-autonomy movements throughout the galaxy and were even able to authorize the use of thermonuclear reaction weapons against other humans.

Vindirance's supporters were no less influential, however, and were able to orchestrate armed resistance against the forces of Latence on a galactic scale and were even able to easily infiltrate military bases in the Sol system itself to coordinate their campaign against Latence's supporters.

Latence was ultimately defeated after the faction launched a coup d'etat against the New UN Government, hijacking the Macross-13 before being defeated by the forces of Vindirance and the VF-X Ravens. However, not every Latence sympathizer or supporter was killed or imprisoned. Some just got dishonorable discharges from the military, such as Ernest Johnson, who later became a defense consultant as a private mercenary and then became commander of the Ragna branch of Xaos's PMC division. Some splinter groups of Latence survived the purge of the military and became anti-government terrorist groups. Fasces, the antagonists from Macross the Ride, are one such remnant of the Latence movement. Kaname Buccaneer's home planet of Divide is a planet where the whole Latence-Vindirance fight never ended, so the planet is locked in a semi-permanent state of civil war between the pro-autonomy faction and Earth-supremacist faction.

How many war between NUNS and other alien races happened before VF-X? Did Latence just use the Zentrandi to say that there were propably other deathly races humanity should look out for? I guess they were anti-Zentrandi too?

Also, the Vajra invasion must have had given their remnants ammunition to use, right?

Anyway, how did a foreign singer like Melodie Sexton come to know Macross? And beside her and excluding dubbing actors, which non-Japanese singer has contributed to Macross? And why did I found an image of Yoko Kanno in an animal suit when searching for Gabriela Robin, who sang for Macross Plus?

As far as we know, the New UN Government made peaceful contact with every alien race they met after the First Space War with the sole exception of the Vajra. However, the Zentradi remain a significant threat and the Vajra were also very much on the New UN Forces' radar after the disastrous first contact in 2040 and the loss of the 117th Research Fleet in 2048. A big part of Latence's push for Earth to dominate the government under the guise of "unity" was the increase in internal conflicts between New UN Government member worlds.

False Prophet wrote: Sat Mar 07, 2020 11:26 am I guess they were anti-Zentrandi too?
Nope... in fact, there are more Zentradi among Latence's named characters than humans.

Ernest Johnson, the Zentradi commander of Xaos's PMC operations in the Brisingr cluster, was a Latence supporter who was kicked out of the military for his involvement in the failed coup d'etat and had to become a mercenary as a result.

Naresuan and his anti-government group Fasces in Macross the Ride are a surviving splinter group of Latence's supporters. Naresuan himself is a Zentradi who took a human name after the First Space War, and is enthusiastic about Earth's culture to a level most would consider otaku territory.

When the producers approached the label asking for demo tapes when auditioning music for the OVA, her demo tape was one of the ones that was played. Like the performers before and after her, she was acquired through the record label she'd submitted demo tapes to, not auditioned for the specific production.

Re: The Official Macross Delta Anime Thread Mk I

Has there been any Macross OST album being released on cassettes? I have just read about the way Japanese anime music came to the States, and it seemed like except a few cassette releases, most albums were released on either vinyls or CDs.
