US Navy Littoral Combat Ship to operate swarms of drones

The human resistance is no longer safe under, nor on the high seas. The U.S. Navy has added the ability to "operate" surface and undersea drones to its Littoral Combat Ship.
The growing fleet of unmanned surface vessels has made rapid technological improvements in recent months, including being capable of performing longer-range surveillance. They've also become more effective at neutralizing mines and launching coordinated drone attacks.

Ocean drones are gaining new forms of autonomy, thanks to new technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and improved algorithms, the Navy strategy's emphasizes that humans will still be needed to make decisions such as when and if to fire weapons or others needed for combat.
As part of the expanding shipbuilding portfolio, the Navy expects to have USVs (unmanned surface vessels) play a large, critical role working in concert with manned systems," Alan Baribeau, spokesman for Naval Sea Systems Command, said in an interview with Warrior Maven. "Just like UUVs [unmanned underwater vehicles] will not replace submarines, we do not envision USVs replacing manned surface combatants. But they will work in concert"
This Navy spokesperson is obviously not a reader of the Robot Tomes. Hopefully The Resistance can convince Cetaceans to let old bygones be bygone and ally themselves with whale kind to take back our oceans.

The Human Driving Association Lobbying to protect humanity's right to drive themselves

http://www.thedrive.com/opinion/18952/t ... -manifesto

humandriving.org
We cannot escape the march of technology, but we can channel it toward paths that strengthen rather than weaken us, expand our horizons rather than limit them, and guarantee that the car—once and still a symbol of freedom—doesn’t become a tool of the tyranny we seek to avoid.
Despite a storm of clickbait media reports, there is still little evidence that self-driving cars are safer than humans. We don't know what "safe" or "safer" means. There is no government regulation defining a safety standard, nor has any self-driving car maker declared what that standard might be.

Unless self-driving car technology is demonstrably safer than humans—and even if it is—human freedom and choice must come first. We don’t need to sacrifice safety for freedom. Remember the wise words of Benjamin Franklin "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Even if the world were full of enemies, there is someone you must protect.

Robot Apocalypse News

Its a Robot Apocalypse double header.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... jump-video

Boston Dynamics has created a robot that can run autonomously and jump over obstacles. Boston Dynamics latest Terminator, can run, jump, balance, and back flip.
“The Atlas hardware takes advantage of 3D printing to save weight and space, resulting in a remarkable compact robot with high strength-to-weight ratio and a dramatically large workspace.

“Stereo vision, range sensing and other sensors give Atlas the ability to manipulate objects in its environment and to travel on rough terrain.”

Atlas stands at 1.5m tall, weighs 75kg and has 28 joints in its body.
Boston Dynamics also makes improvements on their "Hunter Killer" class robot, cutely named Spot.
https://www.cnet.com/news/boston-dynami ... tion-mode/

No need for my usual editorial this time CNet Sci Tech reporter said it best.
Boston Dynamics' robo-dog SpotMini doesn't need a human to go for a walk. The robotics company just posted a video of SpotMini in its autonomous navigation mode, bringing us that much closer to the robot apocalypse.

Once SpotMini familiarizes itself with the building's layout, it's able to get to the programmed destination all by itself, without hitting any walls or obstacles. Smart dog... maybe too smart.

Over 3,000 Google employees urged the company not to work on a Pentagon ‘AI surveillance engine’ used for drone warfare.
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... rveillance

Google is currently working on "Project Maven", a custom AI surveillance engine that utilizes a wide range of data captured by drones to detect vehicles and people. The drones will autonomously track their monitors and provide this to the DoD. Google assures their employees that the technology will operate drones, and will not be used to launch weapons. However the over 3,000 employees aren't buying this story, they're response "We believe that Google should not be in the business of war..."

Tokyo Researchers are one step closer to building Terminators
https://news.nationalgeographic.com/201 ... e-science/

Tokyo researchers have developed a method of using rat muscle tissue in robotics.
The “biohybrid” design, described today in the journal Science Robotics, simulates the look and movements of a human finger. Video shows how it bends at the joint, picks up a loop, and places it down. It's a seemingly simple movement but one that researchers say lays the groundwork for more advanced—and even more lifelike—robots.
