I have decided to not get pissed this sunday as getting to church (A Club) is such a hassle : (

Went to a couple of G*Y Bars last night, please no one edit that I see no problem with it.

Had some freaking loverly cocktails...3 at a time and got home at 3am. SOHO was fun but all the bars in london central were changing to get in : (

Hope everyone had fun.

Meanwhile, here, and in England, and in places like Germany, where the drinking age is 16 and only applies in public, we have no such teenage alcoholic problems, since you can drink like Jack Sparrow legally anytime you wanted anyway, so the desire to overdo it, just isn't there.

The Uk has a huge underage drinking problem linked to increasing gang activity, underage ***, gun crime and drugs. The legal drinking age is 18 but the UK is the biggest binge drinking nation in europe. Still we are a nation of drinkers and always will.

Well, that's true, yes, I haven't been back in a while, so I wouldn't have known about that trend firsthand.

I'd contend that the drinking problem wouldn't be half the problem it is, if not for the other factors that you named coming into play and exascerbating it. The problem begins because the 'wonderful' (sarcasm) 'socially liberal' (no comment) government decides to ban defensive weapons (more power to gang criminals, great work guys), legalise previously illegal narcotics (wtf?), and institute ridiculous social campaigns for making teenage pregnancy seem 'less bad' than it actually is, aka 'sex education' targetted at young kids. (which led to a recent article in The Guardian where they discovered that some girls are now finding teenage pregnancy 'attractive'.)

So all in in all, I'd say it's largely a part of how society is being run. I was considering heading back home after this World Cup ends, but I have the feeling that things wouldn't go so well, since England is like a totally different country now, compared to a few years ago.

Best local Irish Pub. Stone-sober, everyone else stone-drunk. Place packed. Had my moment of "priceless" when I walked up to the bar and asked for a pint of milk to go with my BLT (I had work and Japanese class before I could head out, so I was famished). The staff know me so they just laughed it off (and gave me my milk tinted green, mind you), whereas the other patrons around me looked at me like I was a two-headed calf. Which, given their state of inebriation, I might've actually looked like. So it wasn't a great celebration, but I was there.
