Gyunei?

So is there any more backstory on Gyunei in CCA? Aside from the common instability of Cyber-Newtypes we only get a small amount of info on his backstory. Gyunei mentions his parents dying in a colony drop, was it supposed to be the OYW or the Dublin colony drop? Also why is Gyunei on the side that caused his parents death in the first place? Also was Char originally Gyunei's mentor/parental figure(for his own ends) like he was with Quess later on?

So... Gyunei doesn't say that his parents died in a colony drop. He says his parents died when their home colony was destroyed. He never says what Side or by whom, but in Beltorchika's Children he was from Side 4. Which isn't exactly going to change the fundamental problem you pointed out...

Gyunei explains his reasons for serving under Char to Quess in the movie. He says that when people like [Char] get angry, they start destroying colonies and that someone needs to be there to prevent it.

(So, you could say Gyunei is unapologetically on the side of the colonies but is serving in Neo Zeon's forces out of a desire to protect the colonies both from the Federation AND from Char himself.)

According to some sources Gyunei was 19 in CCA; so that means he would have been 5 years old when he was orphaned in the OYW, he was probably raised in a refugee colony like Sweetwater, and thus would have grown up around rebellion, but been too young to participate in the prior battles(not that it stopped the armies from using child soldiers like Ple and Uso, but still...).

Also his tie to the colonies explains why he's part of the force that wants to freeze the earth, yet wants to stop Char destroying the colonies (at least before his creepy obsession with Quess takes over...).

Ple and Uso are Newtypes, though... Gyunei isn't. He's a Cyber-Newtype.

Gyunei's interest in Quess isn't creepy romantic interest... it's more a case of him being jealous that Quess is a "real" Newtype while Gyunei is a Cyber-Newtype. She came by the power he covets honestly, and has the ear of Char, so he's INCREDIBLY jealous.
