New OP and ED likely this episode.

Edit: Yep. And they're spectacular.
Spoiler
Show
OP indicates Episode 2 won't be China's only appearance and also hints at Sei's return (via silhouette! YUS). Also Mirai is hinted to be the next Gunpla Idol.

Junya finally appears... seems jerky. Fumina's jelly level is really spiking and yay the return of Gyanko, Shimon and Suga. The latter fishes. The new Gunpla are finished after much quarreling and napping. We get a Nemesis European Junior Champ named err Lucas? ... we're going to actually go to World level now? Sakai is once again a threat, so long after his debut. The theory about BBG being perma-RG mode seems confirmed. Wilfrid also recognizes the BBG.

The OP essentially confirmed what everyone expected that Star Winning transforms into a full sized unit.

ANd surprisingly, the ED song for once in this build Fighters does NOT suck. Build Fighters has always had great openings but god aweful EDs (**** you Potato chips, you were the worst song!) And they even made it Fumina's personal ending.

Nice to see the chairman's grandkid really took Aila's words to heart.

Okay, can I just say I am so sick of the dialogue in this show? This has been a recurring problem for a while but I'm getting really tired of characters not only constantly pointing out the blatantly obvious, but constantly reiterating everything. I know it's a kid show, but the dialogue is nothing short of teeth grindingly tedious. The first Build Fighters wasn't Shakespeare, but at least its dialogue was straight-forward, simple, and served the plot and characters. At least it wasn't rammed down our throats. That and I'm sick of the flashbacks (obviously no where near as much as Seed, but there do seem to be alot more here than season 1).

Finally, a week where I can do CAMEOS! Same rules as usual, skipping main character suits for the most part. Ignoring the background ones that come from lineart too.
Spoiler
Show
Walter Gundam
Gaia Gundam
Jester Gundam, with a small modification to the head (V-Fin is now a bow, and hat is upright.)
Nu Gundam
Desert Gelgoog
Desert Zaku
Zaku Diver from ZZ MSV This one was a bit of a surprise, I had to look it up just to be sure but given the head shape, shoulders, etc, even though it's not using the subrok gun, it's definitely the Zaku Diver.
The writing definitely is shifting more like S1, I greatly enjoyed this week's episode, the triplets interaction with Kei, the montage of them building, everything fit together really well. The ending bit got me anticipating seeing the new rivals in action. There wasn't a ton of action this week but it wasn't really necessary, there was a lot of build up and overall another great episode.

Also the Hyadain song was the best and I'll never agree with anyone that states otherwise ;_;

I know it's a false hope but I really want Gabai team to do decently, I love their Zakus, and the leader is a Shin Matsunaga expy, so I can't help but hope.

Come on, we haven't yet fleshed out the existing characters, do we need to introduce even more? Yeesh.

I'm still not really finding Try to be enjoyable. It continues to just be paint-by-numbers run-of-the-mill standard Shonen with no signs of wanting to break out of that mold. That said, the issues it's gotten in the last few episodes are shockingly different from the issues it had in the early episodes. Sekai keeps getting the highest level of praise just dumped on top of him by every character, it's starting to get grating. Also, y'know, even the curb stomps in season 1 weren't this one-sided. Probably because we actually got a chance to, ah... See them. I've heard rumors that Kuroda is dissatisfied with the tighter restrictions Bandai's placed on the show. If that's the case I get the feeling the issues with Try may be some sort of passive-aggressive attack, or just execs saying, "Toss in more popular stuff! I don't care if it hurts the quality if it makes money! No, detailed fight scenes are too expensive, just have them yell more!"

Some other niggling problems:
Spoiler
Show
Building montage was unnecessary.
How could Yuuma possibly improve on Sei's work? Especially when Sei was a clearly better builder than him in the first season and had an extra 6 (or however many it was between then and Build Burning's creation) years of experience?
Team Jobber didn't even upgrade their units... It's like they know they exist only to get shot down.
What's the point of hiding Minato's Super Robot when it's shown clear as day in the OP? What's the point of building it up when I'm almost entirely certain it's going to get beaten by a single punch?
Assuming he is the kid from S1, how would Lucas have known Aila used a Jegan when he never saw the only fight she used it in?

Miss Aila, I will do you proud.
Heck, that might even be the very same Jegan gunpla that she used to wreck Gawain.

And yeah, Mirai looks to be taking Kirara's role from last season based on the OP clip and the fact that the girl originally named for the job (who won that Gunpla Rally a couple episodes ago, BTW) got too sick thanks to getting knocked up.
*notes Raikoh's ninja post* Eh, haters gonna hate. And I'm sure that Aila curb stomping a Devil Gundam in a Jegan would be a story told many times over.

The quality of BF is being steadily restored to us. Only time will tell now if it can pull out of the nosedive it was heading in. At this rate, it certainly will.

OP and ED were great and lots of nice looking machines. Can't wait for next week!

And yes, Aila would be proud of you, Lucas.

That was pretty much known since the start.

-Try was being handled by entirely different team of people. Very few of the original staff were brought back.

-Kuroda was simply an "advisor" with series composition until episod 12 or 13. You can see his name change in the credits in the recent episodes. They brought him back as head writer again after the negative reviews of the first hafl of the series.

-There was a lot morepressure from the network sponsers to try and make it appeal the 12 year old toy buying demographic where as the original Build Fighters was just something they were doing for the gundam fan demographic specifically. Which is why we now have a main character that's a generic shounen cliche with no real personality or in depth character that can do no wrong and does everything right.

I like how Kuroda's way of fixing everything that was wrong with Yuuma and Fumina was to have the show literally telling them "Get good, scrub!" and "You suck and you're useless".

"Fight on for another 10 years" indeed. I find it hilarious how Gyanko's solution to making any Gunpla more powerful is apparently to put a Gyan shield on everything. It's like her version of Frank's RedHot Sauce.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if Sekai ends up carrying one of the R-GyaGya's shields in his fight against Junya and it ends up being what helps him win the fight, as that shield was tough enough to withstand a full-force Seiken-zuki.

I dunno, I didn't feel like the first half was that bad, and then the past few episodes have me as excited as I was for BF S1 episodes, being able to barely stand the wait. It still was definitely above other generic shonen shows I've seen marketed for kids (which still generally have sizable fanbases so I don't get why Try was getting hate from Western fans), and it seemed like it was doing just fine in Japan, at least among the 200+ modelers/artists I follow, it gets lots of fanart, custom models, etc.

It's not amazing but some people acting like it's godawful, I literally cannot understand that viewpoint (Though to be fair everyone on here who dislikes it has been reasonable, most of the more extreme reactions that I don't get comes from offsite.)

There has been a quality jump since Kuroda came back for sure, in the writing though, I'll say that.

But things like the Building Montage, I freaking loved it, I thought it was fun and great. I can't really see a problem with it, and I'll agree with Amuro that people are putting WAY too much of an emphasis on "Sei the Master Builder" when it comes to the Build Burning Gundam. And they've always hid units that are spoiled with the OP/models/lineart.

And are you just being really cynical Raikoh? So should the Qubeley Papillon have had no build up (it got beat by a punch.), or how about the Dark Matter (beaten by double punch)?

Yeah I didn't even know who 'Lucas' was until he selected the Jegan and then it all clicked in place in my head. Very nice callback, and it's cool to see a spoiled, privileged kid actually work to be skilled at GB in his own right. I can root for a character like that.

Eh, i don't watch this show for whip-smart Aaron Sorkin-like dialogue so it doesn't bother me.

If your cup of tea isn't the Shounen formula but you liked Build Fighters because they were able to do something with it, the first half of Try would be severely disappointing.

In retrospect I probably shouldn't have ranted. I was arguing a bit too much from emotion just because I was fresh off watching the episode and really happy, so it probably wasn't the best time to write something that should have been thought out.

I knew Lucas had some sort of connection due to his surname, but I didn't put two and two together like y'all did. Then again, he wasn't there to see Aila's fight with the Jegan, so why would that machine mean anything to him?

From the brief glimpses we see in the OP, Junya's machine honestly looks kind of SEED-style to me, especially with that forehead plate which is reminiscent of Providence and Legend. Since it has Build Burning-style particle emission points, the real question now is, "Who built it?"

When Kei got flustered by the triplets not recognizing him, he totally sounded like Joseph Joestar, and that made me laugh. :D

I think "Speedy Sleggar" being Akira's nickname suggests that people within the BF universe do not, in fact, recognize that there are people who look and act just like Gundam characters, which is something that's been debated for a while. If anything, I'd say the nickname probably comes from his using the same machine as Sleggar and having a similar style.

Also, if Junya's been running around proclaiming himself a student of Jigen Haoh while being a jerk, it might partly explain why people are surprised to see Sekai, since he's a JH practitioner who's actually a nice guy. It might also explain why Akira was so cool with him after the fight.

I dunno if anyone realized, but Karin (the model who was talking with Mirai) was the winner of the Gunpla Race back in episode 10. Rather unfortunate that she had to bow out of being the image model, but I'm sure her son will be happy with a new sibling. :D

I can't agree with the notion that they're rushing any rival introductions here, as some have said. The entire purpose of the training camp episodes, in addition to inspiring the Try Fighters' upgrades, was to introduce the people we'd be seeing in the Nationals. In fact, the only character who was introduced out of nowhere this week was Lucas, and obviously people have figured out that he's a returning character from the first series. We do need to see teammates for Minato, Junya, and Lucas, but they might be in the same boat as Shimon, where their teammates are 100% ancillary and don't have any real impact on the plot.

And yeah, I like the new OP and ED even if it's not Back-On anymore.
Sakuya: "Whatever. Stop lying and give up your schemes, now."
Yukari: (Which lies and schemes are she talking about? It's hard to keep track of them all...)

From what I've observed, one of Kuroda's strengths as a writer is being able to establish a unique and interesting identity for characters at introduction and still set them up for more development later. The first half of Try did the opposite of that, where characters got hyped with lots of hints of who they're supposed to be, but no real development afterwards. While introducing even more new characters this late is certainly a problem, the new characters are much better introduced, and the build up feels a lot more substantial. Notice that we now have three well established rivalries with characters who are well defined, and the effective use of a cameo with continuity from the previous series. Notice also that the two main supporting characters now have a clear purpose and direction that's not just tied to the success of the main character. Kuroda is using very straightforward and simple methods of writing, and the writing is by no means innovative, but it's well executed and works much better than the repetitive hype/de-hype cycle that the first half of the series ran on.

Probably heard about it from his grandfather/associates. They probably also recorded the battle.
