Re: Galaxy Kikotai: Majestic Prince

I realized that Thursdays now have no meaning and are a relegated to a generic status as a typical weekday. I cried for minutes! Then my doorbell rang and this guy who calls himself Life kept saying there's plenty to replace it with, but I don't trust door to door salesmen, they're always too good to be true. :P

You could try watching a non-anime show such as The Mentalist and play catch-up :D

They don't even show Mentalist on Thursdays anymore. Luckily they show the far superior Elementary aka Sherlock Holmes in New York with Lucy Liu, as the hottest looking version of Watson outside of porn parodies.

That being said, still a sad panda as far as anime intake goes. Maybe Samurai Flamenco or the Blazblue anime might help.

I didn't take too well to Elementary what times I have seen it. Yes, yes, scream blasphemy or whatnot.

I think I aught to get a good book and read it on thursdays or something. :|

Re: Galaxy Kikotai: Majestic Prince

Almost a year later and I FINALLY got around to finishing this show. It was a lot of fun and definitely some of the best mecha anime I have seen since Code Geass. It had a few problems and I will admit that sometimes the silliness got in the way of actual story, but I enjoyed it.

A part of me wants a second season...yet another part of me is happy where they left off. I would have preferred a bit of an epilogue with the characters, but given how some anime adapted from manga just...ends...with no resolution, I am content that MJP gave us some satisfaction.

And with this, the Soma-resurrects-old-thread to a show she FINALLY watched, should be over...I think...then again, I haven't talked about the Bleach manga in a while...

The anime pretty much ignores the manga for the most part, so that was never going to be an issue.

I want a second season so I can see Kei and Izuru hook up, damn it!

More MJP would be welcome, yes. Of course, it does indeed satisfy.

Re: Galaxy Kikotai: Majestic Prince

Started watching it. Up through Episode 3. It has some really nice art direction and neat mechanical design, making a good first impression overall. The initial mix of tones--comedy, serious, melancholic--left me a little confused by the end of the episode 1. But strangely, even though 2 and 3 have been less "punchy," I feel like I'm starting to understand this show's rhythm, and it's settling in a little faster than I at first expected. Some elements work more than others, and some aspects seem to play a bit too much on derivative "tropes," but it's been an enjoyable experience all and all so far. (Oh, and the character designs don't feel as Hirai-like as I was initially concerned they would.) In some respects, tonally, it feels like a show from the period of, say, 1998-2001. (Things like Zoids: New Century Zero, Candidate for Goddess, and Outlaw Star come to mind.) Though, I do get some mild Fafner vibes, as well.

Re: Galaxy Kikotai: Majestic Prince

I'm through Episode 8, Battle of Ceres. It was the best episode in a while, I'd say, and the best action since Episode 1; but I'm getting a bit of a "disconnect" from this series. I really want to like it, and it's had its moments, but it just hasn't convinced/hooked me yet the way I thought it would. The progression of the plot has tried to be methodical, but it's come off a bit more as rather slow and sloppy. Episodes 4-6 felt pretty lackluster to me in all areas, testing my patience, and Episode 7's best attribute was how it gave an insight into the enemy and built tension. I feel like a lot of this could have been condensed and/or presented in a more progressive, succinct manner, though, where the plot didn't seem to be taking one step forward and one step backward so much. The whole graduation thing seemed superfluous and hammy to me after already having given these characters the action and privileges of previous episodes.

All of that said, the action, when it does happen (which is less than I originally thought so far), is top-notch. The CG isn't perfect, but it's definitely top-tier; and the choreography, more often than not, is a thing of beauty. The plot itself has plenty of promise, and the themes about identity and human nature have been some of the best elements in the show. The characters still need a fair amount of work; they've had moments of great interaction and development, especially in Episode 3, but there's an noticeable unevenness that's punctuated by the show's need to make them seem more like "caricatures" than people too often. I know this is technically an "action-comedy," but I've seen a number of shows that weave in comedy more seamlessly than this one (Trigun, Outlaw Star, and Zoids, for instance). There are genuinely fitting and/or laugh-out-loud moments, but there is a lot of silliness that just falls flat and sabotages the overall tone, because deep down at its core, I think this series also wants to be fairly serious. The balance between those elements hasn't been found as of Episode 8, and that may be the biggest thing holding this back, because it takes away the sense of immediacy and danger to many of the battles.

The OP and ED are still fantastic, and the BGM is solid enough. The art design work is appealing and even striking overall; though, some of the character designs are somewhat distracting in their overly cartoonishness. I've been switching between dub and sub on the DVDs. The dub does seem to overplay some of the voices a bit, like the main guy from Team Doberman, and sometimes the localization of certain lines goes too far, losing the subtly of what's on the subs. Still, I'm generally a dub guy, and it's a solid, largely accurate effort that makes it easier to follow the visuals, so I'm trying to stick with it.

Re: Galaxy Kikotai: Majestic Prince

It picks up in the second half, particularly the last quarter of episodes.

By no means is it the best mecha show but it is entertaining for what it does... mainly good action scenes/battles (when it isn't reusing animation... or at least not a lot of reuse) and comedy centered around its highly flawed cast.

Re: Galaxy Kikotai: Majestic Prince

I think your points pretty much sum up MJP's issues, Count. Please don't quit by any means, as you'll enjoy the action (and the best is yet to come) at least. Sadly, the characters won't be living up to anything what they could be. The potential is all we really get from them compared to what they could have gotten.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you talk about the comedy sabotaging the plot. It could have done better by eliminating those awkward moments. Still, the ending stages of the show will fix this issue just a tad. Just a tad, mind.

Re: Galaxy Kikotai: Majestic Prince

Finished this series twice recently, once alone and another with my friend

Personally I am of the opinion that MJP's cast is its greatest strength. I wouldn't say they're deep or complex but I find them to be very likable especially as a whole team. When I marathoned this series, I found myself watching the first eight episodes in one sitting and even then I felt reluctant to stop (it was getting late). The comedy was good in my opinion as was the chemistry between the main five cast. I thought the supporting characters especially Team Doberman is quite good too. I did think Commander Simon needed more development though. I do think that a little more developements of the casts would be nice but I don't have much complaints by the end about it.

I'm not exactly fond of the main plot but I loved the series cast and comedy so much that I was fine with it, if only to serve as a background for what all this stuff was supposed to happen in and I was fine with this. I thought the series really combined the light hearted elements and it's serious moments quite well.

I thought the battles and cheography were pretty good as well, especially the Izuru and Jiart battles later on. I thought it was just pure fun to watch. I'll be rewatching this series again in the future just for the battles for sure.

I wasn't a big fan of Ange the first time around but I really liked him/her much more on the second rewatch with my friend though I think part of this is due to me and him enjoying it everytime he/she goes berserk.

I thought the final arc was a bit meh compared to the rest of the series, which I thought was great but it was still enjoyable to an extent.

I don't know how well or not well this series did but I'm personally hoping for a second season just because it's feels such a fun series.

Re: Galaxy Kikotai: Majestic Prince

It's based off a manga and isn't in any way truly related to it other than as reference material. They even have an alternate universe manga now for the anime. It of course won't be seeing the light of Western day and shall experience the same fate as the rest of the mecha manga, and stay untranslated. You know it's bad when even pirates won't touch the stuff, much less legit sources.

Besides that, I hear the anime did very bad. It was competing with Gargantia, Valvrave *Stifles snort* and Attack on Titan. It just couldn't rise above the big names. Heck, Build Fighters even came out right after it and essentially stole people's attention as well. 13 was a glorious year for anime and mecha genre, but not if you really, really needed to stand out...

Didn't get model kits either, so no one's interested in touching it.

Re: Galaxy Kikotai: Majestic Prince

I'm now 12 episodes through. It's been picking up a little bit as the main story is being revealed. I was most struck by the scenario in Operation: Ares, as it had a different feel to the series that I haven't felt as much since Episode 2. Episode 12 really caught me off guard, as you'd think a "midway" episode would be about having a "big bang" to go into the second half of the series. But, actually, it was better this way. As goofy as it could be, the slice-of-life gave me more time with the characters, and did some nice development along the way. It helped break down some of the "caricature" aspects--ironically enough by being self-aware and calling out those caricatures.

I think if the uneven Episodes 4-7 had been streamlined, I would have a stronger feeling of enjoyment toward this series so far, as Episodes 1-3, and 8-12 have been rather good. I still haven't had the total "aha" moment, but that's all right. Anyway, this show does have its merits and charm--and has a certain uniqueness that's hard to put one's finger on--so I'll continue on...
