Re: The Official Gundam AGE Anime Thread AGE-9

From the whole timeline thing, Flit actually seems to seem like a much better character than you know, we were just judging him as a hateful dude because he wanted to exterminate all the Vagans.

The scene with Yurin really does define Flit as someone who's had tremendous guilt laid out upon him. From the moment she died, things really went downhill for him. His argument with Yak Dole pretty much summed things up. It's really hard to pin Flit being evil with the part where he has this guilty burden that's basically existed his entire life. Child soldier doesn't really accurately fit the picture as someone who's lived with the reality of losing people he cares about to people who at once masqueraded that they were aliens and then revealed they were humans.

Exactly. and not only Yurin but rewatching the 1st gen aother thing crossed my mind as to why he finally snapped.

Flit took the tragedy with his mother as a naive but optimistic motivation for The Gundam so that no one else would ever be hurt because it was a savior back in the days.

Skip...x number of years later to when he's finally able to find the enemy that tok his family away and once again, even WITH the tools to save the ones he loves, he still fails and has to watch as someone else he cares about dies to the hands of the vagans. Now I don't think when Yurin died that he was thinking back to his mom, god no, he was thinking I couldn't save her, didn't help the one who killed Yurin was a homicidal maniac but never the less, the haunting memories realistically WOULD do this to some one, its just 60 years of anger and war WILL do that to ya, you'd think atleast.

Now if only they could go back and rewrite Kio's arc to play more onto the realistic probably that Flit told Kio all sorts of stories about the war, though probably sugar coated it to be less grim, just thinking how a grandparent tells their child stories about their times in war.

Flit would be a good candidate as a Dolan comic character.

Re: The Official Gundam AGE Anime Thread AGE-9

I found this site which has the death count of named characters. The list doesn't include characters that died of old, which should include Vargas and Madorna. It does include characters that are only mentioned to have died, such as Olfenoa who was said to have been executed for treason. For a quick comparison, I have made a quick table showing the death of both named EF and Vagan people by generation, including the civilians.

G1 EF-4 Vagan-1 Total-5
G2 EF-4 Vagan-13 Total-17
G3 EF-1 Vagan-5 Total-6
3G EF-7 Vagan-7 Total-14
Total EF- 16 Vagan-26 Total-42

I should point out that I'm counting Olfenoa, Shanalua, Reina and Aaron as EF, as it is the faction they originally belonged to. Also, I'm counting Marina on G1, Romy on G3 and Girard on 3G as it is where they were first mentioned.

*munches chocolate bar while watching review*

Sigh, I'm starting to think while Duel was the only one who liked the Fardain arc as it was, I'm the only one who liked the Vagan MS designs. I honestly think they're very well done and not childish at all. If they were built in real life, I doubt people would be laughing at them....Oh well, I guess we've had monoeyes for so long people won't settle for anything less than mediocre Zakus.... :(

So I guess it's back to the same old same old designs again.

As far as the artwork, I agreed with the review, the character designs never once really bothered me. And he nailed it when he ranked Grodek as an awesome captain.

Well, yeah. It's a giant robot. Even Ginguiser would draw fewer laughs as a gargantuan metal death machine than the goofy mess it is.

Also, the general love for OZ's grunts and the Flags from 00 says it's not THAT wed to the monoeye as you're making it out to be. Is it a shame they didn't take hold? A bit, though I did feel the designs did start to all blur together after a while (with exceptions of boss units like Zanald's metal gorilla) To say this automatically means people wanted Zaku-types though is just throwing to the other extreme. I mean, the show DID have its Zaku equivalents and they certainly didn't seem to enjoy any special popularity. If anything, people more seem to favor the Adele/Clanche...which, while GM-esque, people seem to largely favor on its own merits.

My worry is that they'll not keep experimenting with new, different ideas, and try and make them more and more humanoid along the lines of GMs. I also happened to despise most of the grunt machines in both Wing and 00, so me fearing a return of universal century based designs is optimistic to me, considering my tastes.

At Duel's list: My precious Quin Mantha is number three!

I love some of the vagan designs, I love me some HG Farsia and Zeydra, though with that list I'm a little sad I didn't see G-Bouncer or Dark Hound...cuz those along with Clanche Costume and O-Custom are going on my top list... God i need to pick me up a Beargguy...

Re: The Official Gundam AGE Anime Thread AGE-9

In a general sense, I really liked most of the designs. I liked the Vegan suits for being so unique, and I LOVED the Genoace/Clanche series of mobile suits. Probably my favorite grunts ever, even though they sucked, but that's what grunts are for anyway. Most of the Gundams were kind "meh" for me, but I loved all three of the AGE-3's forms, and I was sad to see it go so fast.

Actually, this is kinda sad. This show ended only two or three weeks ago, and already this topic is effectively on life-support. 00's kept going for quite a while, even after the movie happened.

The movie was announced right after the last episode so there would still be something to talk about, Age has not done that so there is nothing to talk about.

Re: The Official Gundam AGE Anime Thread AGE-9

The Vagan suits from Arc 1 were memorable because we didn't know they were human. They were dragon-like robotic entities who for all we know could have been, you know... actual robotic dragons. The part where the eye line glowed and they made the beeping sound added to the mystery factor.

Then they reused the design repeatedly, even after we knew they were humans, and then the appeal started fading, simply because everything seemed to style off the core mechanic of "This looks like a dragon. With a slit for eyes." Even the humanoid suits had dragon-like features. Shooting with your "tail" like a cannon? That always looked funky in my book.

I don't think they looked bad, but it felt like some of the suits with their tail beams were poorly executed. Epyon, for example, had a tail in MA mode, that turned into a whip in MS mode.

I also had issues with the energy bits. I still am not sure if those are robots, balls of pure energy, or what. It was never explained how they could follow things around.

@Duel, this isn't the mech thread, but to respond to something you said, the FX has become one of my personal favorite Gundams, and I really like the kit for the Legilis, and thought it looked nice in lineart, but in the show it was sort of just meh.

Re: The Official Gundam AGE Anime Thread AGE-9

Finished this series just the other day. I had watched the first few episodes, got sidetracked, and then rushed through it all over the past few weeks.

I feel like the early episodes were meh, which is part of the reason I let myself get sidetracked. As I got through it, it seemed to be getting better and better, especially in the second generation. There were writing mistakes where certain characters make decisions that don't make sense, but I felt the mistakes were self-contained. You could forgive them because a few tweaks would have made it work with the overall plot intact. Compare that to, say, Gundam Wing, where there were a lot of confusing elements that are deeply embedded in the story--too much stuff would have to be rewritten to make it work.

Towards the end of the second generation, though, things start falling apart, and that continues through the third generation. The show loses its grasp on the plot, and since this is the ending, every mistake starts to matter more.

Likes:

* There are no enemy grunt suits. There are friendly grunt suits (first generation Genoaces are worse than the Leo), but all the enemy suits are tough to beat, at least at first.
* The Rapid Prototyping of the AGE system was a neat idea
* The theme of characters getting caught in cycles of revenge. Not a new idea for Gundam, but I don't think it was ever explored to this depth.
* Multi-generational arc was also a neat idea, and could have been pulled off with better writing
* Yurin might have been an obvious Lah Lah reference, but her death was pulled off just as well

Dislikes:

* No Bright Slaps for characters that needed to be Bright Slapped
* Characters start complex and become superficial. Flit turns from a kid genius into a genocidal maniac. Zehart turns from a tortured antagonist to a blind follower of Ezelcant. Fram goes from testing Zehart to being a blind fangirl. Asemu goes from being ready to settle down with his family to being a pirate for no good reason. Romary doesn't Bright Slap him when they reunite.
* Why oh why does SID just randomly show up at the end?
* War Orphans. Just stop it. They were no good in First Gundam, they were even more pointless in Zeta, and only exist here to give Wendy something to do.
* Kio hands over critical data in exchange for do-nothing drugs because he's a stupid kid. This is what would happen in Real Life if you put stupid kids in mobile suits.
* Not one good, lasting female character.
* Everything about Kio in the last half of his arc. He's a failure of self-awareness.
* "Let's have Newtype powers, but not call it 'Newtype' just to be different"

Overall, better than SEED Destiny, but not as good as SEED. SEED at least managed to keep its head above water all the way to the end.

Edit: also, if there is a followup to AGE, Seric must stay dead. If they do the Mu La Flaga thing again, I swear to FSM, there will be blood in the streets.
