Anime military fashion

I have an odd question for the board.

I've been trying to write a book where a character wears a single-shoulder cloak similar to the those worn by Oz officers in Gundam Wing and Brittanian nobility in Code Geass.

But in all my searching I've not found out a proper name for the piece, or what real-life military used it as part of their uniforms. Does anyone know the proper name for the cloak?

Wouldn't it be called a cape? :P

That style of military dress is similar to what was worn during the Napoleonic Wars period and was popular with most European armies of that time, particularly Germany and France.

It's just a shorter cape that's draped over one shoulder, worn when it was raining or snowing outside. I don't think there's a specific name for it, aside from the generic "shoulder cape". First it would be attached to one shoulder, drawn across the back, and then draped over the other shoulder to free up arm movement. When the officer went back outside and into the rain he'd just draw the bunched up section over to his other shoulder and Whammo!, instant poncho.

That's what I learned in my history of fibers class anyway.

It seems like every bit of fashion has an alternative name. It's my least favorite part of character design since I don't know much about styles or clothing.

But I guess it is just a cape, which makes things a little simpler. I appreciate the info, everyone. Thanks.

a lot of marching bands actually use that type of uniforms now a day, however the U.S. Army still has regulations for the wear and appearance of capes for officers AR 670-1. It's funny and I've never seen one but the regulations are still there.

There might be a nation or two that use them as part of a dress uniform, but otherwise no.
Then again, OZ was quite the old fashioned bunch.

they are really uncommon to see them in anything other than strictly formal occasions.
