Animal Mecha?
So what would be the first example of animal themed mecha? I've mostly seen real robot shows , and they often stick to humanoid designs. Outside of Zoids and 86 there don't seem to be that many piloted mechs shaped like animals (which was kinda interesting to see the BuCUE in Seed). So do they predate real robot? Or was Zoids the first to utilize this?

That kind of thing is more the domain of the super robot and tokusatsu shows.
Beast King GoLion (known in the US as Voltron) is probably one of the best-known examples. Raideen is one of the older examples in the super robot genre, being a humanoid robot that can transform into a bird.
Panzer World Galient is one of the older examples among real robots.
Certain versions of Mechagodzilla have also been piloted robots, though whether Godzilla counts as a conventional animal is up to personal opinion.
