Energy in the UC?

Watching the Reconguista in G Movie got me thinking; how exactly does energy work in the Universal Century? It's shown that the nebulous Photon Batteries provide power to the Earth in the later Reguild Century. So how do power satellites like Highland from Victory Gundam operate? Also are they the only power source, or are there sources on earth as well?
