has anyone used the word for the process of turning real life planes into Macross Valkyries?
anyways, can you guys recommend some planes? all of the models i know are from various shumps that use real world planes and Area 88.(and even then i couldn't remember most of the models from the latter.)
planes from other shumps(scifi and everything in between.) at the moment, i'm stumped with Taito's R-Gray units. R-Gray 1 especially. not even the VF-25's electromagnetic thingie technology could make the transformation along the lines of a VF. R-Gray 2 on the other hand, i think is doable.

Don't know if "valkyrization" is a word, but I suppose it works
I know there are a few fellas on DeviantArt that have done some variable fighter transformables in the same mold as Macross, using either real world fighters or fictional fighters of their own design. I'd recommend checking those out. Some are quite good.
I think the Macross Valkyrie by it's very nature has created an unfortunate state in which it's one of those things that is hard to follow up. I mean REALLY hard. Even most professional artists haven't tried to surpass or even just "succeed" the Shoji Kawamori valkyries. Those that have invariably end up doing a variation on an existing theme. Actually inventing a transformation system again and again like Kawamori has done is ridiculously difficult. I suppose it's great for Kawamori in that he found himself a niche in mecha design that makes it really damned difficult for anyone but himself to replicate his work. But what Kawamori builds is so difficult that Macross-style valkyrie fan art is very rare. There's no real way to make fan-valkyries work unless you're thinking all three modes through to their logical conclusion.

's the first I've heard it put that way, but it's been done.Henyo wrote:has anyone used the word for the process of turning real life planes into Macross Valkyries?
The F-14 is the obvious one... perhaps because that is exactly how Variable Fighter Master File asserts the early prototyping for the variable system (and VF-0) was done. They started with the F-14A++ and went nuts.Henyo wrote:anyways, can you guys recommend some planes? all of the models i know are from various shumps that use real world planes and Area 88.(and even then i couldn't remember most of the models from the latter.)
Various fan art has attempted to turn other, modern fighters into VFs with mixed results.

I've had this one saved on my HD for a while now, from an artist named CursedChimera

Thought it was pretty damned good and worth keeping.
Also, found this fella on DeviantArt:

He's go a bunch of transformables. A little rough though.

Takayuki Yanase (mech designer for Gundam 00) did something on his own.

But as mentioned, it's really hard to do well what Kawamori does. Otherwise it ends up being a Transformer, or worst, a Bay-former.

Re: Valkyrization
Hornet, Stealth, Harrier, Raptor, Phantom and X-36
this are the usable planes in Strikers 1999(AKA Strikers 1945 II)
the stealth was used for the nightmare right? and IIRC so was the X-36, albeit only by a small amount.
have the other planes been used for a VF design?
Gradius' Vic Viper is a good candidate from Valkyization. the ZOE version especially. it only needs a GERWALK mode.(although this will be hard. given the transformation to Robot form.)
Viper Phase 1's Judge Spear and Raiden Series' Raiden MKII are also in my list.

Re: Valkyrization
All of those fighters would be fine to make into variable planes, but as MrMarch mentioned, it's really hard to make a transformation system that works and works well. A good example is the SV-51 which is based off the Su-27. In Kawamori's production art, it literally starts out as a Su-27. But as he creates the transformation of it, he stretches it in both directions, thins out the fuselage, etc. Then he designs the battroid form and makes that fighter shape work into that battroid. In the end, the SV-51 didn't look like a Su-27 anymore.

Re: Valkyrization
Much better. Thank you.
I think I have seen this design before. It's a little "chunky" transformation-wise, but it's interesting.

Re: Valkyrization
looks like the F-22 Raptor. interesting design especially the thin legs. looks more along the lines of LEVS and Orrbital Frames. it does seem to be an AI controlled VF though. if the cockpit(was gonna ise canopy, but not sure if it was the right term for that part.) is any indication.azrael wrote: Try this link:

so that's how th man went about in designing VFs. guess this is why i had a major headache in turning the R-Gray 1 and Raiden MKII into Valkyries. i tried to preserved the original designs. In Kawamori's production art, it literally starts out as a Su-27. I'm surprised that no one has suggested Ace Combat and Yukikase, yet.
They have futuristic looking planes that at least slightly resembles what flies in real life.
To some degree...?

I'd like to see them valkyrized.
BTW, check out the plane from the PS game Philosoma.

there aren't enough large parts to form arms and legs.
some of the planes in Raiden Fighters are also good to Valkyrize. especially the Ixion.
a question though, are the VFs the same size as real life planes? the VF- Valkyrie model in particular. since it's based from the tomcat.

Re: Valkyrization
The Valkyries do have established sizes and yes they are similar to real world fighters. As a result, their GERWALK and Battroid modes are proportionally sized as well. The VF-1 Valkyrie is actually among the smaller variable fighters and is much smaller than the F-14 Tomcat upon which it is partially based. The VF-1 Valkyrie is 14.23 meters long (approx. 47 feet for you yanks) while the F-14 Tomcat is 19.1 meters long (or approx 64 feet).Henyo wrote:a question though, are the VFs the same size as real life planes? the VF- Valkyrie model in particular. since it's based from the tomcat.
Most valkyries have their sizes and weights listed. Just check the individual profiles for more on any particular valkyrie.
Re: Valkyrization
by pure accident, my supplier Mista Sexton took home the rough sketch of my Valkyrized Raiden MKII. he went and draw for the heck of it.
http://s34.photobucket.com/user/DekaEve ... q.jpg.html
i've already made refinements to the design but this is the basic shape that the valkyrized MKII will have. had trouble with the wings. wasn't until today that i found a solution.
now the head..i can't think of a good approach for the head design...
also, more shumps ships! i'm gonna work on the Philosoma ship next.
BURNING!!!

Very retro, for sure. Like if Macross was a super robot show instead of real robot.

I'd suggest using visor type heads. Except M7, most of the VFs are visor.

making the transformation realistic as possible is a killer. the arms transformation process for GERWALK and Battroid mode especially. the head design ended up looking similar to the YF30. XD
