Episode 27 - Transition [4th]

((All AEUG players continue posting here.))

~13:22 Coordinated Universal Time~

- Gryps 2 -

- The Dervish -
- Bridge -

The grim metallic bulk of Gryps 2, its squat cylindrical colony habitat retooled into a devastating weapon by the Titans, hung ominously below the trio of steadfast vessels that made up the remainder of the 4th Advance Squadron in misleading silence. After passing hands between Bask Om's thugs and Haman Karn's fanatical band of Zeon refugees from Axis the colony laser had now been in the AEUG's possession for two tense weeks. In that time funerals had been held, repairs had been started and an anxious defense organized. The Argama, the heart and soul of the AEUG, had departed several days prior in an effort to prevent the asteroid Axis from colliding with Granada leaving Henken Bekkener in charge of the patchwork garrison.

With the fleet positioned midway down the hull of the laser, the gaping maw of Gryps 2 was slightly ahead of and below the 4th almost as if they were looking down the sight of a massive gun and they were in prime position to watch any further uses of the now-idle WMD. The bridge crew relaxed at their stations talking quietly amongst themselves (or reading, in Jungst's case), as a long-awaited shipment from Luna made its way closer thanks to a small convoy of "privately owned" AEUG transport ships. The fleet as a whole had been resupplied within 48 hours of Maelstrom's end, but the 4th had relied on a beg-borrow-and-steal system to get their hands on the parts they needed to begin tough repairs. Thanks mostly to Loweno and Sager they had come by the majority of the items that were most badly needed, but the distant transports were a welcome sight.

Besides the 4th's own imminent resupply the ship, and indeed the entire AEUG fleet, was still abuzz over the successful firing of Gryps 2 earlier that morning. The Argama had caught up to Axis in time and, in a daring move they hadn't yet gotten all the details of, managed to contact the Radish to aim and fire the colony laser which diverted the asteroid and saved Granada. Watching Gryps 2 fire from such a close vantage point, even knowing that it was under their control and was being used to save a lunar city, elicited strongly mixed feelings in everyone. Vivid memories of the aftermath of Gihren Zabi's solar ray were prominent in the minds of many, and a sort of uneasy dread that Capt. Abbey had felt growing inside him since Maelstrom's successful conclusion was physically manifested by the blinding beam of light. He had to make sure the weapon did not fall into the wrong hands again.

"Transport contacts coming in slow, sir. There's something else with 'em," Filmore said, spinning away from his conversation with Wade to give the captain a report. Abbey, who was standing at the bridge windows watching the incoming ships, turned to the operator's station with a slightly surprised look. "'Something else with them'? What does that mean?" he asked, gliding back to his command chair to rummage for his binoculars. "It, uh..." Filmore said, hesitating as his computer fed him data, "It looks like a couple of Salamis Kais,". Abbey's look turned quizzical as he returned to the windows, and he raised the field glasses to get a look for himself. "That can't be right," he muttered aloud, "Where the hell would they get them?".

"Captain, we're being hailed - they're using AEUG codes, but..." she said, raising a hand to press her headset closer to her ear with a look that was just as confused as Abbey's. "The damn things are blue," Abbey said, lowering the binoculars after getting a glimpse of the ships Filmore was marking as Sally K's. He tensed up - something was wrong, surely. "Well, patch it through," he said to Jane after a moment's thought, but he added quickly, "And get ahold of André. We may need the Hamburg back here...". A burst of static on the main overhead monitor was replaced by a mostly-clear image of what appeared to be an EFSF officer sitting in a Salamis Kai's captain's chair. "Attention, this is the EFSF cruiser Rockhampton - I presume I'm speaking to the Dervish?" the man asked amiably, only puzzling Abbey further. Some of his initial apprehension was lessened by the man's tone and posture, but he answered a bit warily, "This is Capt. Carl Abbey of the Dervish. What, uh... What exactly is going on?".

The Federal officer chuckled and answered, "Pardon me, Capt. Abbey. I can imagine this may be a bit unexpected, so let me explain. I'm Capt. Benton Boles of the Rockhampton, and I was just passing through the neighborhood near Amman the other day when I was contacted by a gentleman I think may be a friend of yours,". One of Abbey's eyebrows cocked. "Gates?" he asked. Boles held up a finger and corrected, "Sir Gates, captain. As was made clear to me multiple times,". "That's him," Carl grunted, folding his arms. So Gates had stepped up to the plate for them again, likely with another large wad of cash involved, but that didn't explain the who or why of contacting a Federation unit. Boles folded his hands in his lap and continued, "Of course, officially speaking, my superiors do not approve of my presence here and this is not a sanctioned mission. Officially speaking, I diverted my patrol route from the moon to follow these civilian transport ships to protect them from attack by Axis or the Titans. Unofficially speaking, I hope these supplies help you kill every last one of those bastards."

Abbey pushed the brim of his cap up and said, "I appreciate the sentiment, but it's a little hard to be too grateful considering it's taken this long for the Federation Forces to end up on the right side of things. And they don't sound particularly gung-ho about it either, captain,". Boles' demeanor grew more serious and he nodded, "I can't exactly argue with you there. But I assure you we're prepared to make things easier from here on out, and I'll be making another escort run, time permitting,". Wade snorted in derision at his statement, and Abbey drummed his fingers on his upper arm. "I see. And I suppose time didn't permit you to join the AEUG before," Capt. Abbey said, his chin jutting out a bit. "Captain," Benton began defensively, but Abbey held up a hand to stop him. "Apologies, Capt. Boles. Thank you for your assistance," he said, "If Gates has sent along presents with you then I know we're in for a treat. And we can use one right about now,".

Carl unfolded his arms and shrugged, "I wonder though, why you? Other than the fact that you were available, as it were,". Benton leaned forward a bit and said, "Why us? To run interference, you mean?". He rested his hands on the arms of his chair and mused, "Well, yes, we were available. And my direct superior has some sympathies for the AEUG I suppose you could say. Besides, this is what we do, captain. This is an escort squad,". Abbey smiled faintly at 'escort squad', but he assumed there was more to it than seemed obvious. "At the risk of insulting you again, captain - are you being paid?" he asked directly. Boles chuckled, "Me, personally? No.". "I see. AEUG sympathies," Abbey muttered.

"Not bad, not bad," Dr. Lekarz mumbled quietly as he examined Fritz' shoulder. He prodded an area close to the wound causing Fritz to wince, and then reached for a fresh bandage. "Your laceration was pretty ragged," the doctor said as he cleaned the area around the gash, "Took more stitches than I expected, but you're healing up well,". Lekarz began to cover the area with a sterile bandage and glanced over at Michiko who was sitting on the edge of the bed closest to them. "You know, lieutenant, you don't have to be here to supervise," he said with a smile. "Yes, maybe you can convince her. I feel like I've been taken to see the doctor by my mother," Fritz said, wincing again as pressure was applied to his arm. "Oh, be quiet. If you didn't want me to come with you, you could have said something," she pouted, her brows knitting. "'Could have said something'," Fritz muttered, "<When did I not?>".

Michiko folded her arms across her chest and warned, "You know speaking a language I don't understand isn't going to help you,". "I'm beyond help," Fritz said as he started to rotate his sore shoulder after the doctor finished. He stood up from the stool he had been sitting on and thanked the doctor before straightening the front of his uniform. With his arm injured and bandaged, he had switched back to his sleeveless Titans jacket giving him what Eddie had characterized jokingly as 'the Quattro Bajeena look'. Michiko rose from the bed she was seated on and looked across sick bay towards the more seriously injured, bedridden patients. "How is Ltjg. Archer doing?" she asked quietly, looking to the end of the row where Rick was laying on his side. Lekarz removed the gloves he was wearing and answered thoughtfully, "Well, the JG has permanently lost his sight. Too much damage was done to his eyes and optic nerve. Between some fine work by the medics that responded in the hangar and our efforts to keep him stabilized here, his heart received only minor permanent damage. Beyond that, it will simply take time for his burns to heal...".

Fritz blew out a breath at the prognosis and Michiko held a hand over her mouth. "His war is over. That's the way we always tried to look at it," Fritz said. They stood in silence for a few moments before Fritz softly cleared his throat and spoke up, "They moved our meeting back to 1730 because of the Argama's success. I'm going to go get something to eat and maybe find Eddie,". "Okay," she said quietly as he began to head for the exit.

- Team 1 Ready Room -

Celeste took a deep breath as she sat on the team's couch, holding the picture of Ed they had managed to take while in Amman. During Operation Maelstrom she had been prepared to help Celeine make a last attempt to reach Nick, but Fritz had told them the Titans wouldn't be present and had prevented Celeine from stowing away in her mobile suit. That had turned out to be tragically wrong for the Balrampur and several of the 4th's pilots, and both women were unsure that they'd ever have another chance to even see Nick, much less try to speak to him. And now everything was in doubt and Jacob was angry with her for not single-mindedly chasing the man in that blue mobile suit... "What am I supposed to do now, Clute?" she asked, laying down on the couch.

- Hangar -

"Eheh," Dr. Merkwürdigliebe chuckled, gathering up the papers that were scattered across his temporary desk. He and Rem were back in their 'office', a room just off the hanagar proper, going over some of the doctor's notes and the massive amount of combat data collected during Maelstrom. "The equipment packs are, eh, verking adequately," he said, tucking a sheaf of papers under his arm, "Or at least as well as we expected,". Rem nodded and rubbed his eyes with the back of his forearm, as his hands were still heavily bandaged. "So what do you think the home office is going to do with the data?" he asked, gesturing generally at the pile of discs they had compiled. Dr. M thought about it for a moment and then answered honestly, "I am not certain these packs are the best direction in which the Rick Dias program might continue development. Based on the figures I've been playing with over the last few days, it seems that, ah, we would be better served moving on to a modified design rather than supplementing the stock unit,".

Rem was taken aback for a moment. After his stunned silence, he asked, "So what does that mean for us? I mean, beyond the packs, the S Type Dias is the only unit we're directly studying here from that line. What's to keep us here?". The doctor smiled strangely and answered, "Not entirely true, Mr. Banner. Beyond the S Type Rick Dom and the Nemo Kanone, I have, eh, other interests related to this assignment,". He patted one of the files on the table labeled 'M.156'. "Besides," the doctor added with a sly grin, "I think a certain female pilot would be angry to hear that a mobile suit is the only thing keeping you here,".

- The New Yark -
- Bridge -

"That should finish it up. Tell Ensigns Mart and Stamble we're having a short meeting at 1600. We'll use it to finalize their transfer," Capt. Guanche said, handing the sheaf of papers to his XO. He adjusted his glasses and crossed his arms as he watched the transport ships moving large containers marked with the logos of several different companies (including Anaheim Electronics and Gates' family business) onto the Dervish. A pair of Federation Salamis Kais were nearby, close enough that he could make out GM IIs standing on their decks with the naked eye. Capt. Abbey had sent him info on the Rockhampton and Capt. Boles, but after a few minutes of digging he hadn't been able to send back anything of note. The fact that Maximilian Gates had the wherewithal to get an EFSF escort patrol to sign on to guard his transports spoke to the man's business and negotiating acumen if not his intelligence. Or perhaps it was just human greed on the part of some Federation commander.

- The Hamburg -
- Bridge -

Some distance from the 4th, the Hamburg sat stationary close to the dead hulk of the Balrampur. They had conducted rescue and recovery operations several times over the two weeks following the battle, and this was scheduled to be their final trip. The Balrampur had taken catastrophic damage, but it's main section was still roughly in one piece because the reactor and fuel explosions had not totally annihilated the ship. Capt. Loweno sat in his command chair with a stack of papers on his lap containing a list of crew that had been rescued alive after the ship was sunk and the folders with the transfer orders that pertained to his ship. As a launch flew past the bridge windows, he shuffled through the documents and flipped the top one open. Ltjg. Kawamura had been transferred to the Dervish much to his chagrin, but she was a good pilot and Carl needed a replacement for poor Terrace Manosk.

As sad as he was to see her go, he had more pressing things to fret over. To replace her and Randy Emington he had been given Lt. Uraki and an Ens. Ishma, who had apparently come from the Irish's fleet. It seemed that the Seattle had been damaged heavily during the battle and had been abandoned shortly thereafter. Capt. Mandena had, in effect, lent him to the 4th because her fleet didn't have as much of a need for another Nemo and pilot. He knew nothing about Kou Uraki, other than what his surprisingly light personnel file provided. But the man was a lieutenant and had years of experience so he had to be worth something. "Sir," Stalvern spoke up, calling his attention back to their grim task, "We should be done here in another 45 minutes,". "Let's take our time," Loweno said, resting back in his seat, "I don't want to leave anyone behind,".

- Sick Bay -

For over a week, Alfred had drifted in and out of consciousness. For days he had seen and spoken with people he now knew in hindsight were not there - his mother, Chris, Bernie... His medication was so strong and his head injury was such that he didn't even know if he had been awake during those imagined conversations. It was very difficult at first finally coming out of the haze and realizing that he was, in fact, really awake. The pain in his side and head helped make it clear that he was not in a dream, however, and he slowly improved enough to sit up in bed and act something like a normal human being again. Now that he was lucid he was a constant annoyance to the doctor and nurses, asking about Paris whenever he had their attention. If he got another non-answer or vague reassurance, he would climb out of bed and go to her himself.

-The Dervish-
-Mess Hall-

despite making the mess hall a near permanent residence, Wales had yet to actually eat anything, having found himself unable to stand the smell of anything cooked which only served to make his choice of location even more peculiar, not that he could really go anywhere else, the dorms simply reminded him of sleep he couldn't get and the mechanics had made it clear that he was being a nuisance in the hangar, so the mess hall it was.

letting out a sigh he rolled his head back to stare at the ceiling for what was most likely the 400th time

-The Hamburg-
-Hallway-

Outside the door to the sick bay, paris waited in the hallway, seemingly hesitating as her hand hovered over the keypanel for the door, she had been cleared for duty about a week and a half ago, but despite that she had yet to visit Al out of guilt, feeling responsible that he got hurt trying to save her from that mainiac. paris wished she could've talked to Irene for advice but she had been transfered to another ship so the rookie pilot had to do this alone.

taking a deep breath, she steadied herself while looking at the cyclops team patch I can't keep putting this off forever, I owe it to him to at least see how he's doing. without further ado she pressed the main button on the keypad and waited breifly as the door slid open, before gently floating into the sickbay and making her way past one of the nurses who's back was turned and pushing aside one of the curtains, revealing the bedridden pilot she was looking for.

"uh...hi" she began, coughing once to stop a nervous stutter from getting out.

-The Dervish-
- MS Bay -

The Dervish was huge, but what Irene liked most was the new-like appearances all around the ship. Unlike the old design like the Sally and the Sally K, this ship was probably closer to the Garuda. Things were more humane if not simply more comfortable. Thinking of this, she felt rather guilty from leaving the Hamburg, Capt. Andre, Paris and also Alfred behind, but she also knew maybe in here she could do something more to protect those dear to her.

“Miss Kawamura, are you ready?” the Engineer’s voice crackled through the intercom. She replied, “Okay, I’m ready. Let’s do this!”

The blackness of space now filled with sparkling stars everywhere along with dimmed lines. This one should break her 30 hours of simulation inside a Rick Dias. This was comparatively new experience to her especially the head cockpit. There were also few more abilities and generous improvement over the Nemo model.

She intended to get as much experience as possible before the next operation began. The learning curve was somewhat higher and she needed more time to make full of every option now available to her. Her warning sign chimed in the background, asking for attention. One Rick Dias and a Marasai appeared on her screen. “Oh, this should be fun..”

An hour latter after some repetitions she began to really liked her new Clay Bazooka. Slow loading and slow firing but somewhat reliable.

A guy opened the hatch door after she finished and poked his head inside, “Your statistics improved, better than I expected. Did something happen?”

“Ha-ha, I thought it be worst.. More lucky shots I guess, I can’t really feel the aim for this big fella unlike the beam rifle.”

With that she ended her routine and watch aside as other men did their work on a number of MS. Few are badly broken but just now they seemed to get enough parts and started to work franticly again.

While Kou had personally wished he could have stayed on the Dervish and gotten to pilot a Rick Dias (which he thought Nina might have possibly designed) he knew that he was needed on the Hamburg, which lacked a clear leader. He had spent most of the time testing out his Nemo and getting to know the officers and the tech crew. He still needed to really get to know his team.

And that was why he was outside of the sick bay, about to check up on Al, who was wounded in Operation Maelstrom. He followed Paris in silently up to Al, before announcing his presence with an awkward "Hi, uh, ignore me?"

"Come on, Cowboy, don't tell me your not a little worried about it." Eddie smirked as he and Marvin walked to the mess hall. With the Dervish not in combat, the gravity block was operating, which was a welcome change of pace.

"It's just a mobile suit. I don't believe in curses like that," Cowboy said quietly, already tired of the subject. A week earlier, once the MSA-099S formerly belonging to Terrace Manosk had been repaired, it had been reassigned to Marvin. Having already claimed two Dervish pilots in combat, plus the incident in the hangar, some of the mechanics had started to view the mobile suit as cursed, but Marvin had merely brushed aside those comments. "Besides, it's not the first time I've taken a suit from a dead pilot." He muttered bitterly.

"Yeah, I know." Eddie sighed, knowing Marvin referred to the fight the Dervish had in orbit the previous summer, that ended up with the ship joining the 4th. But Eddie wasn't going to let the younger man dwell on that battle again. "I'm just sayin' I'd think about it a little. I know I did back when they'd give us rebuilt tanks or some s*** like that."

"And did you believe in those stories too?" Marvin asked as they reached the door to the mess hall.

Eddie stopped just before opening the door and frowned. He thought for a moment before grinning. "Never. Cake time!" He slapped the button and walked towards the line. The mess hall was mostly empty, save for a couple of mechanics and other crew, and Wales Ingleshard at his usual table off to the side, and they were through the line with their trays in barely a minute. Eddie quickly took a seat at the closest empty table to the end of the line.

"Lovely diet, Eddie." Marvin observed. He had normal food, while all Eddie had was a couple of large chunks of cake.

"I had a late breakfast with Jane. Besides, we're on a f***in' Irish an' I'm gonna continue to enjoy the perks!" Eddie grinned before digging into the food with his fork.

Re: Episode 27 - Transition [4th]

"Nonononononono!" Jacob yelled as the serpentine weapon of the Blue Demon lashed out at him like a lightning bolt and wrapped around his Rick Dias' head. He pulled the trigger but the other mobile suit batted away his bazooka. His body tensed as he half expected to feel the excruciating pain of electricity surge through him.

Instead, all his screens went black for a few seconds before "scenario ended" flashed in front of him.

He was too tired to curse any more. He'd run simulations over and over and over for hours on end since the end of the last battle. He paused only to eat, sleep and go on his assigned patrols. It had taken him two days before he even survived one of the simulations. Three more days had passed before the first time he'd managed to down the Blue Mobile Suit.

Now, he could destroy it about one time out of every ten and more than half those times he had to do something that got his suit destroyed as well. He didn't care about that part, as long as the murderer paid for what he did.

Sometimes, it felt like the computer was cheating, that it was making his opponent do things that he couldn't possibly do, but he knew the truth. The man in that machine was just that good.

He was about to start another simulation but paradoxically, he was thirsty and had to pee. With a sigh, he removed his helmet and climbed out of his machine. It didn't take long to stop by the bathroom and then move on to Team 1's ready room.

Spotting Celeste immediately, he ignored her as he got a tube of coffee from the vending machine. From the way his hands twitched and his red eyes, it was not his first.

"Who's that?" he asked as he saw her looking at a picture.
Yep...That's Texas in a nutshell. Why just say "f**k you" when you can put it on a flag?

Hamburg Ms Deck

Kite took a deep breath, he used his gloved hand to wipe the sweat from his forehead as the cockpit opened up. He floated from his trusted Nemo and made his way toward the locker room to get changed. He was helping with recovery but his shift was over.

Having quickly gotten changed Kite took it upon himself to go to the lounge and grab some water. He wasn’t so much hungry at the moment but he needed something. After grabbing his drink he floated down the hall while drinking his water. "Everything was such a mess...."

Sophie moved through the hangar past the Rick Dias S-type that was now assigned to Marvin. Hearing how Terrace was killed had sent a chill up her spine and the mechanics didn't make things better with all their talk about how the mobile suit was cursed. Still, they need mobile suits and the S-type was one of the best they had. Her destination in the hangar was the room that Dr. M and Rem used as an office. She was heading there for two reasons: 1) she wanted if there was anymore that could be done to improve the long range targeting of the C-type and 2) most importantly Rem was there.

"May I enter?" she asked with a knock on the door as she arrived.

- Gryps 2 -

- The Dervish -
- Mess Hall -

Fritz, enjoying his temporary freedom, walked solo into the mess hall to find it mostly free of crew now that the vast majority of the lunch rotations were over. He entered the serving line behind one of their marines and noticed that Eddie and Marvin were present. After waiting for the soldier to get a mountain of food piled onto his tray, he picked out a few things and made his way towards the Team 2 encampment. "Eddie, Marvin," he said, sitting down across from them with his tray. "Good choice," Fritz nodded towards Eddie's cake, "'Why We Fight', eh?". Along with his own small meal he had a nice, large block of the cook's beloved dessert. The weeks following the success of Operation Maelstrom had been nice and quiet, but enough time had passed with no real strife around Gryps 2 that it was starting to concern him more than it let him sleep easy. The Titans and Axis would be out to annihilate them when they came back. In a way he felt like he was stuck in Western Europe again waiting on the next Zeon attack. "I never noticed how cold it was in here," he muttered, making a mental note to see if his EFSF jacket didn't bother his arm too much when he got back to his quarters.

- Team 1 Ready Room -

Celeste's eye were red like Jacob's, but for a different reason. She rubbed the back of her hand across her cheek and quietly responded, "I don't know,". She shook her head and amended her answer, "I mean, I know his name. Edward. He's important to...". She hesitated, not sure how to describe the situation. Celeine Caro'd entered the room during the brief silence and spared her from having to try. The reporter looked Jacob over and said bluntly, "Hello Jacob. You look like crap," as she sat down on seat next to Celeste's couch. She turned to Celeste and said, "I've been thinking about it, and the next time you go out, I'm coming with you. Nobody is going to stop it this time,". She patted the thick notepad she carried with her and added, "I'll leave my material here with someone trustworthy enough, just in case...". Angelina sat up and nodded silently at Celeine's commitment to their private mission, and then gestured towards the pad and asked, "Your material? Have you been writing?".

Caro'd laughed and held up the pad, running through it like a flipbook to show that almost every page was filled with writing. "I'm a reporter, remember? I've been writing since I got up here. Since before I got up here, when I was with the Karaba," she explained, setting the well-worn notepad next to her. She looked at Jacob again out of the corner of her eye, trying to judge whether or not it would be prudent to continue openly talking about Nick in his presence. "After last time," she continued, trying to choose her words carefully, "Something tells me we'll have another chance. He's too tough to disappear on me,". About that time, Michiko walked in. She had recovered from her funk after she started speaking to Fritz again and for all intents and purposes seemed close to normal. "Hello everyone," she said, smiling faintly as she decided to head for Jacob and the vending machines rather than sit down in the middle of whatever Celeste and Celine were discussing.

The reporter's eyes followed her as Celeste responded to the greeting. "Well, if it isn't the girlfriend," she said cattishly, crossing her legs and leaning back against the couch. Celeine and Fritz had come to what might be called a shaky truce but she was irritated that he had ruined a chance at talking to Nick during Maelstrom, and taking a shot at him vicariously was the next best thing to doing so in person. "W-what?" Michiko squeaked, her finger coming to a stop as it hovered over a button on the machine next to the coffee. She turned from the drink machine, her face burning pinker than her uniform, and vigorously shook her head, "T-that's not true!". Her expression and tone of voice made it almost seem as if she had to force herself to deny it, even though she sounded sincere.

- Hangar -

"Had enough, huh?" Sager said with a smile as he approached Irene's Rick Dias. He wiped grease from his hands and continued with a chuckle, "You've been spending enough time in simulation for two pilots,". He had his crew working around the clock shifts repairing the ship and her mobile suits, and had seen Kawamura's suit 'in use' so to speak for a good number of hours himself in addition to the reports from his men mentioning her while he was absent. As another container marked with some kind of highly stylized window logo was opened down on the floor, he reassured her, "Don't worry. The Rick Dias isn't too different from a Nemo. Plus, it's always better to be in a superior mobile suit, right?".

In the de facto AE branch office just off the main hangar, Dr. M and Rem both smiled as Sophie arrived. "Of course, of course my dear," the doctor answered her, sweeping up some of his papers into his arms, "Please, let me remove this, eh, mess,". A loose sheet slid out of the M.156 folder - a technical drawing of a blue mobile suit's arm complete with shoulder spikes. "I'll, ah, be happy to get out of your way here," he said, nodding to the two as he continued to pile work materials onto his arms, "Just einen moment,".

"Uh... hi," a familiar voice said, causing a dozing Al's eyes to snap open. "Paris!" he blurted, reacting a little more outwardly than he intended causing himself to blush. "I was just, uh, resting my eyes," he explained, sitting up straighter as he tried to plow through his initial embarrassment. He smiled broadly in spite of himself and said, "So they were telling the truth. You made it back okay...". A dark-haired officer glided up to the bed after Paris and quietly said "Hi, uh, ignore me?". "Uh, hello sir," Al said, giving a weak salute, "Is there a problem?".

Sager comment surprised Irene which then reacted with a girlish grin. “Superior mobile suit, eh…” she replied rather absent mindedly.

During her short stay in the new ship she already developed a good sense of respect to the old man. Sager was not only a skilful mechanic but also motivating to the whole hangar crew who performed better than anyone’s expectation. But even so, Sager’s word doesn’t really gave her the comfort she needed right now.

Without trying few glimpse of unpleasant memory played like a broken player on her head. Sparkles of fires from her vulcans, shattered metals, and then her Nemo against the blue MS head to head. She faced Sager for a moment and said, “Really, it’s not my place to complain. This Rick Dias is truly a great MS. But Sager,” Irene stared down somewhat losing some of her confidence, “I fear that blue machine is even a step further than this model.”

Why did I have this fear now? It isn’t like this when I’m in my Nemo. Could it be it’s because that now the chance to defeat that blue machine is real and not just a distant wishful lucky shot..

Since the transfer she felt real pressure against herself to perform better. Now the power is in her grasp, she was expected to make the difference. This is unlike before when the odds were against her.

This time it’s different, I got the advantage…

“No, I shouldn’t said something like that,” she said with a renewed smile then her calculation fired up. “This is a good Suit, but its reaction is a tad slower than I expected. Can you do something to the Rick Dias to shed some weight below its waistline? I need around 5% overall changes to the vertical reaction time. He said,” she pointed to the man who helped her before, “we needed to shed an amount equal to half the propellant stored in the legs to achieve that. Obviously we can't do that, but shedding some armor might… He told me again that maybe I’ll need to talk with Dr. M for such action, but the Doctor seemed too busy for me to bother. But how about you sir, do you think it's a good idea?”

"Of course, of course my dear, Please, let me remove this, eh, mess. I'll, ah, be happy to get out of your way here, Just einen moment,".

With a chuckle, Sophie smiled at the eccentric Dr. M's attempt to give Rem and her some space. "No need to rush Dr. M," she said and then smiled at Rem, "I have a question for you in regards to the C-type. I know I'm always bugging you about it..." her sentence trailed off as she noticed a sheet of paper had slipped out of one of Dr. M's folders. "Oh Dr., you dropped this," she said while picking it up and looking at it. The blue arm with shoulder spikes that was drawn on the page quickly conjured up the unidentified Titans Mobile Suit that had been killing off members of The 4th since it first showed up. "Dr. what the hell is this!" She yelled holding up the paper for Rem to see and out of reach of Dr. M if he tried to grab it back.
"Kamille, if it wasn't for you...." Jerid's last words

"Its alright" Paris consoled Al as he became embarrassed, letting out a small giggle as he straightened himself "and yeah, i'm alright, i kind of totaled the nemo though, not exactly the best start my career as an MS pilot..." she trield off while rubbing the back of her head sheepishly

"I just...i wanted to say that i'm sor-"

"Hi, uh, ignore me?" came the voice of a newcommer, cutting paris' apology off completely, paris jumped and grabbed the bottom of the bed to stabilize herself and turning to face whoever had just come

"uh...Lt Uraki sir" she exclaimed, still somewhat flustered as she tried to salute, blushing with an equal level of embarrassment as Al had shown earlier

despite himself, Wales mood soured further when the people from team 2 walked in, eddie being his usual enthusiastic self where cake was concerned, he didn't even know why he felt offended by it, but he figured that it wouldn't be a good idea if he stayed there for much longer, the aroma of the meal from someone's tray drifting in his direction pretty much sealed the deal.

calmly getting up, the ensign sauntered out of the mess hall and down the corridors, dimly aware that he had travelled all the way to the hangar. what am i doing here of all places, sager is going to chuck a spanner at my head this time i'm sure of it. he thought as he found himself walking along the catwalks towards his assigned Rick Dias, glancing around he caught sight of sager chatting with irene

"i guess that must be the replacement." he assumed, he didn't know for sure considering he hadn't exactly gone out of his way to meet the new pilot since operation maelstrom concluded.

Kite got changed into his uniform, after his shower. Getting rid of helmet hair was easy with a nice shower, so was stress. To be honest though stress was a little more difficult to get rid of at the moment. His mind was traversing back and forth through the last battle and the present.

He sighed brushing his hair to the side to keep it out of his face. Null G took care of the rest as he made his way to the mess to get some food. Nothing was a good distraction like a growling stomach to jolt the young man awake. He figured he would write a letter to his family; sure he wouldn’t be able to send it till later…much later. Such a large operation and being on alert as they were made a few things difficult.

Bernard leans back in his seat as he looks at the stars. The 2 weeks have allowed him to rest and sleep fully without the worry of going into battle. No more are the nightmares that haunt his mind and even the specters of dead pilots that roamed around the ship have disappeared.
He could almost start thinking about the future after the war until he looks down worriedly at his shaking leg.

Kou suddenly turned more red than Al or Paris. Awkwarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd... "Uhhhh, well, um, I don't really want to interrupt anything... How about I give you two time to get caught up And we meet back up in the briefing room in 10?" He quickly backed out of the sick bay, leaving the two to have their personal chat.

OKAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY, that could have gone over better. Better just head to the briefing room and wait it out...

"Eddie, Marvin." Fritz said with a nod as he took a seat to Marvin's left at the table. "'Why We Fight', eh?" He asked with a shake of his head at Eddie, who smiled but didn't open his mouth full of cake. Eddie's stance on the importance of the Irish class, which mainly had to do with gravity and cake, was well known. "I never noticed how cold it was in here," the MS team leader muttered.

Now without a mouth full of cake, Eddie gave his usual grin. "Well, that's what you get for being on the cutting edge of fashion like Mr. Bajeena," He snorted and stabbed his fork into the already half gone piece of cake. "So, I'm just curious Freddy, are you actually doin' Michiko or what?" He asked casually before taking another bite of cake.

Marvin's eyes went wide in shock and he coughed a couple of times as he nearly choked on his burger. "Jesus, Eddie." He croaked, keeping his eyes on the table, unsure of how Commander Ashlyn would respond, while Eddie snorted a laugh at Cowboy's reaction.

While Sager decided to help the young lady with some theoretical list of few things that might be an option for her, Irene herself started to doubt whether she had the heart to put more work to the mechanics. She was here almost as often as the crews and she knew that they already working well beyond their required shift for the MS repairs.

She was about to comment when she saw Wales approached. The different outfit from the crew made him more visible then the rest. She made sure he watched her and gave a hand wave, asking him to join the conversation.

A pilot from team 2? Or is he from my own team 3? Irene wasn’t so sure about that Australian-ish guy. But a person with first-hand experience of the machine may be useful.

--Dervish--
-Pilot's Quarters-

In the two weeks since Maelstrom, things have quieted down gradually for Wes. He's already dealt with the work involving the transfer of Team 3's newcomer as well as Terraces' untimely demise. He's even authorized handing over his team's only S-Type Rick Dias over to Cowboy and Team 2. On one hand, his team's overall loadout got slightly nerfed, though it also rids them of the the supposed jinx involving that specific mobile suit. And this whole time Wes thought it was Team 3's chain of command that's been cursed...

Being piled with work hadn't left time for Wes to actually relax, or even look out for his health. Maybe it's the fatigue finally setting in, but Curren actually found himself under-the-weather for the first time in awhile. Unfortunately, what started as minor neck discomfort has gradually evolved into a head-splitting migraine.

So there he was, lying down on his cot in the dark as he tried to deal with his sensitivity to light as well as his throbbing head. He was lucky that there hasn't been a battle in the last week, or he'd be severely limited in combat.

"F***ing headaches..." he grunted as he rolled over.

humming to himself, Trask walked down the corridors of the Irish class ship, having used the two week downtime since maelstrom to finish the book he started reading sometime ago, partially to take his mind off of terrace's unfortunate demise.

unlike his teammates he didn't want to neglect looking after himself, so he was heading for the mess to get something to eat, word has it that the chef had been baking up cake again, rounding the corner for the doorway he entered the mess just in time to hear eddie's crass comment towards fritz

"So, I'm just curious Freddy, are you actually doin' Michiko or what?"

blinking for a couple of seconds as he processed what eddie just said, trask just shook his head and joined the line.
"wow. you are the master of social tact eddie" he remarked sarcastically as he got a slice of cake a few other items. and sat down at the table next to the one team 2 and fritz were occupying

huh? what is she waving at me for? wales thought, his addled brain struggling to make sense of it. might as well see what she wants. ignoring a groan of protest from his stomach, he carefully made his way along the catwalk towards irene, hoping that she won't notice or say anything about the dark rings showing up around his eyes due to sleep deprivation

"yes?" he asked as he reached her.

“Umm.. Sager and I just discussed about Rick Dias behavior when you dived it low, break and then tried to turn the Suits’ upward. In the simulation I always get the feeling it doesn’t react properly, feels heavy and sluggish compared to the Nemo reaction. Did the same happen in real life situation?” Irene tried to explain as best as she could while making gestures with her hands to make things easier.

Sager on the other hand already called a mechanic and discussed something technical about the issue. Impatiently he pulled a calculator and did his own rough calculation. Now, Irene felt really bad if her calculation was wrong. Awkwardly her sunglass slipped, sweat and her rather small nose failed her. In an instant before she put the sunglass properly back and received mild pang in the eyes from unfiltered brightness Irene clearly saw black rings around Wales’ eyes.

Now now… it’s been two weeks since the last battle. As pilot he ought to take care of himself.
But she didn’t press the matter. She hardly knew him to ask about such things.
