~08:08 CUT~

- The Dervish -
- Bridge -

"Transit time unchanged, sir. No new information from the Radish or Argama," Wade announced, relaying update information from Jane and Jungst. Another day aboard the Dervish had begun with little out of the ordinary as of 0800 hours, which was one of the small mercies of a long bit of travel in open space. Things had changed radically since last year, when they operated under constant fear of attack as an escort unit working between the moon and Sides 2 and 4. Being the ones on the hunt was something he hadn't had the privilege of experiencing since the tail end of the last war.

Filmore was one of the luckier ones, with relatively so little to do that he was resting with his feet propped on his console. Abbey let him - there was no reason to become a disciplinarian now. His style of command had worked so far, anyway.

- Team 1 Ready Room -

Fritz lay on the couch of his team's room, staring at the ceiling with his head resting back on his interlaced fingers, waiting for the rest of his pilots to file in for the first of the day's briefings. He thought about the conversation in the mess hall the night before, finding himself dwelling on it more now than he had at the time. "Well, you were saying about the Federation sir?" Terrace Manosk asked him, guiding him back to the subject at hand. What would happen when it was over. "If they do manage to make some kind of deal... I don't know if I want to go back..." he had answered in a way he thought was honest.

Was that true, he wondered. The military had been good to him, hadn't it? He had talked before about giving his life to Federation on the basis of a lie. But he had willingly joined so many years ago, long before he had ever heard of the Ritters. He would have to decide at some point if he could separate in his mind his service to one from servitude to the other. Superstition forged during the One Year War made him reluctant to talk or even think about "after" for too long. Even reassuring his wife (who had promised she wouldn't cry seeing him off again after the time before - but had, just the same, and even harder) that he would come back was almost uncomfortable. He had seen too many unlucky boys swear up and down or brag they were going to make it.

His mind changed focus from Terrace's question to the whispered promise at the docks. He had been in his fair share of farewell scenes over the years - leaving home for basic training back in the mid 0070s, getting ready to be shipped east for his first taste of real combat in early '79, preparing for Star One and plenty of others. This time was profoundly different, though. He wasn't out just to save his own skin for his own sake any more. This was the first time he had actually teared up before leaving.

- Team 1 Ready Room -

Jacob slid into the room almost reluctantly. In fact, he slipped through the door while it was still opening and hardly moved deeper into the space at all. Instead, he just leaned against the wall next to the door. It was, perhaps, a sign of how long he's been in the AEUG and on this ship that he did not salute Fritz. Instead, he simply gave the man a polite nod of respectful greeting before looking away. The Jacob from months before when he got onto this ship would have looked on in horror at the behavior of the current Jacob.

The nice thing about being in a room with another guy and no ladies is that the seconds of silence that follow are not awkward. He feels no need to fill the silence. Instead, he looks around the room, his mind on the past and on the future. It seemed that they were finally heading for some action after a long trip and he was both eager and nervous. Eager because he looked forward to a chance to avenge the murder of Clute Tideland. Nervous because he still saw the way Clute died when he closed his eyes sometimes and he found it all too likely that he might die the same way.

"So...uh...do you think we've got them on the run?" He asked, both to make conversation and to give himself something to think about other than violent death. "Do you think we're going to have to fight Axis now?"

The very idea left him exhausted. It was bad enough that they'd been in this slugfest with the Titans for so long. It would be even worse if they had to move right into fighting Axis after finally defeating their current enemies.
Yep...That's Texas in a nutshell. Why just say "f**k you" when you can put it on a flag?

Re: Episode 23 - A Grinding Current [4th]

The Hamburg

Irene slowly watched as the glinting lights outside the window faded out. Nothing comes in her mind but she was troubled. “Space...,” she thought while feeling uncomfortable. Without blinking her eye she remembered the battles she fought, friends she lost, the kills she made, and the feeling afterward… The veteran pilot almost sighed to herself at the word, “murder.”

She can’t help but to pity herself for going to repeat the same process all over again. Unconsciously her back touched the small corridor’s wall. The sensation of wet from her sweat and cold from the outside jolted her back to reality.

Still with cloudy mind, she returned to her room. While changing to her uniform she thought about the briefings and the training simulation she gone through with her new team. Lt. Emington was good in his own way while Izuruha was a bit daredevil to her likings. She got no question about their skills, their survival alone already enough for proof. Meanwhile Ensign Mart who was like Irene just transferred to the ship proved to be capable and quick to adapt to Emington’s leadership.

Her team was good, she has confidence in them. That mindset bolstered her spirit and made her easy to rest.

Fritz had returned Jacob's nod and left the younger pilot alone. He closed his eyes and went back to trying to relax and clear his mind. In a way he felt the way he did back when he was a ground-pounder, spending his free time trying to rest and forget he was inevitably headed back into combat. In those days they clung to any downtime they got and tried to pretend they could carry on like normal people. Since the One Year War ended, he hadn't felt it the same way until now. This fight against the Titans was at its end, and he would be there. There was no way to avoid it, and no going back. So until it happened he was back in '79, lounging like there wasn't a war going on just to keep himself from losing it.

"So...uh...do you think we've got them on the run?" Jacob asked, breaking the silence, "Do you think we're going to have to fight Axis now?". Fritz opened his eyes and rose up onto his elbows. He thought about it for a moment and then answered honestly, "I think the Titans are done once we've got them cornered for sure at Gryps,". He paused again, not sure what to say about Axis. "And Axis... Yes. I think they'll try to assert themselves. Maybe we'll get lucky and the Federation will take care of them while we scrape ourselves back together," he said with a sigh.

That was probably a long shot. The Federation had recoiled a bit from the Titans, politically speaking, after Dakar, but still hadn't officially cut all ties. If this whole struggle hadn't been enough to get them to sever all support who knew if they'd spring into action to fight Axis in time. It felt like avoiding a costly war to follow up the AEUG's fight against the Titans was becoming less and less likely the more the Zeon hung around and meddled.

Dr. M took a sip from the heated tube of coffee he was carrying and flipped over the page of readouts from Eddie's 099S unit. The long pile of tractor-feed paper flopped over, causing several fanfolds to hover in front of him as he scanned down the lines of recorded data. After a few pages, his reading slowed to merely a fast clip until he found what he was looking for. Holding the tube of liquid with his teeth, he pulled a red pen from his breast pocket and circled a paragraph. "Eh, Tony, I think I have it," he called out for the young tech in charge of Team 2's MS.

The mechanic came over, wiping his hands clean on a rag. His eyebrows scrunched together when he realized what the doctor said. "Hey doc, I just gave you that report 5 minutes ago! You can't tell me you found the problem already!" he said, shaking his head as he took the printout. Merkwürdigliebe chuckled in his strange way and pointed at the lines he had circled, "Well, ja. I believe the cockpit sensors reporting this data need to be serviced or, ah, replaced. The commander's custom Rick Do-- er, Dias, heh, was a rushed design and the parts in the ejection system mounts interfere with the wery sensitive systems... crammed into the head, for lack of a better term,".

"I'll check it out..." Tony answered in a monotone, still transfixed on how quickly the AE doctor had figured it out.

Pouring over some recent information, Terrace sat on the couch with a coffee tube as his only companion. Every time he'd turn a page he couldn't help but think about what Fritz had said in answer to his question.

"If they do manage to make some kind of deal... I don't know if I want to go back..."

He wasn't sure how to respond to that. Granted his time in the EFSF was short since he had defected to the AEUG as soon as the chance came, but what would he do after the war ended. Go back home and try to find a job. If the Federation didn't allow him a discharge he'd have to live with being a defector his whole life. No, he'd have to return to the Federation some how after the war.

“Dr. M!” Sophie called out as she floated over to where he was talking with Tony. Coming to a stop next to him she could see the look on Tony's face following something Dr. M had said or done.

She'd been wandering around the ship for a while now and Dr. M was the first familiar face she'd seen in the last hour.

“How have you been Dr.? Make any new breakthroughs with the data you've been collecting?”

-Hallway-

Marvin stretched as he left his room. He'd been awake for several hours already, having taken a shower, brought some food back to his room, and went back to looking over the same reports and briefing papers they had spent the last few days staring at. It was strange, getting all this information given to the pilots to look over. The pilots had never been given this kind of information. The longest reports they had gotten in the past had been five minutes of pictures and performance data on whatever new machine the Titans were deploying. The only distraction had been a call down to the hangar for some reason he'd forgotten shortly after it happened.

Papers in hand, Marvin headed to Team 2's ready room. He'd read nearly everything that had been given to Team 2, and now figured he could basically have some time off, which for him, would mean just smoking or sleeping in his room. He arrived at the door of the ready room, and once again was blasted by music as it opened. He let the door close, even though basically everyone was awake, and yelled as he had done before. "Eddie!"

But Eckardy didn't pop up this time. Marvin frowned and walked to the couch. "Ed-oh." He stopped in the middle of the team leaders name, seeing him asleep on the couch. Marvin grabbed the remote off the floor to turn off the music, spilled the papers he had been carrying on Eddie's gut, and his eyes shot open. "The f***..." He groaned as Marvin turned the music down, knowing Eddie wouldn't let it be off.

"Sorry." Marvin said with a shrug and grabbed the pile from Eckardy, who rubbed the gunk from his eyes. "How long you been out."

"What time is it?" He asked as he spun into a sitting position.

Marvin glanced at the clock. "Ten after eight."

"S***..." Eddie shook his head, grabbing a tube that was on the table and taking a drink from it, frowning at whatever it's contents were. "I really need to sleep longer than two hours. Hand me a soda."

Marvin was grabbing a tube of coffee for himself, but grabbed a cola and tossed it to Eddie, who quickly took a long drink from it. "You only slept for two hours?" Marvin asked in surprise.

Eddie shook his head as he took another sip. "Sorta. Drifted off for an hour or so before Jane got off duty and woke me up. Then got another hour or so later before Jonesy woke me about something wrong with my Dias. Went down to the hangar for a bit, then came up here and tried to read some more a lil' before oh-six and I guess I nodded off again." Eddie shrugged, with a slight grin. "Anything goin' on." He asked as he reached for the remote to change the music that was playing.

"Nope." Marvin said quietly, "Just came up here to return the papers." He said as Eddie finally settled on a song. While Eddie sat on the couch, shaking his head along with the music as he fully woke up, Marvin grabbed a second tube of coffee and headed for the door. "I'm gonna go somewhere more quiet." He said with a wave of his free hand.

"You do that, Cowboy. I need to wake myself up." As if to put his words into effect, he turned the music up loud, even by his standards. Hamilton rolled his eyes and left the ready room, and started back toward his own room.

Re: Episode 23 - A Grinding Current [4th]

Jacob experienced several moments of confusion after Fritz's answer. Although he was well aware of the fact that he was a defector, that technically at least, he was a traitor, he'd always thought of himself as a member of the Federation. He felt like some kind of special operative that the Federation command couldn't acknowledge but who was doing important work for them. The reminder that he was actually fighting against the Federation, or at least a branch of it was depressing.

He felt old and tired. And he knew that the longer the war went, the more chance there was he would be killed. It was just statistics. People just didn't survive too long in a war, no matter how good or lucky they were. Not that it mattered. So long as he got a chance to kill that blue mobile suit. His shoulders slumped and he rubbed his eyes with both hands before taking a deep breath and drawing himself up straight.

"Well, I guess if we can take out the Titans, we can take out Axis. They can't be as bad, right? I mean, they don't have the technology or experience that the Titans do."
Yep...That's Texas in a nutshell. Why just say "f**k you" when you can put it on a flag?

Fritz laid back on the couch and rested his head on one of his arms. After speaking he realized his answer may not have been what Jacob wanted to hear. His own sincere wish was to survive long enough to see the Titans and Wolf Ritter destroyed, and that looked like it was finally close to becoming reality. Markado was showing his maturity by worrying about Axis, but Fritz almost preferred to ignore them because he didn't want to admit things may only get worse after a "victory". Joining the AEUG had been one of the hardest things he'd ever done, and for a while he wasn't sure they had a chance at any kind of success.

Now that they were poised to wipe out the Titans, another challenge was waiting in the wings. He didn't know if the AEUG was built to handle another prolonged conflict. He felt a headache coming on. "Well, I guess if we can take out the Titans, we can take out Axis. They can't be as bad, right? I mean, they don't have the technology or experience that the Titans do," Jacob asked, trying to sound confident. Fritz smiled and sat up slowly, rubbing his temple. "That's true, but I'd never underestimate the Zeon. Depending on the situation, we'll be outnumbered by fanatics in easily replaced mobile suits. It could get ugly fast - Zeon is annoying that way, take it from me," he answered with a small shrug.

He chuckled and reached for the pile of papers on the table in front of him. "I don't want to be doom-and-gloom all the time, though, Jacob. If there's Zeon to fight and I'm alive, I'll probably be there. So you won't be alone,".

Dr. M turned with a smile when he heard his name, and he slid his red pen into his breast pocket and waved to Sophie as she approached. “How have you been Dr.? Make any new breakthroughs with the data you've been collecting?” she asked cheerfully. The doctor nodded slightly and adjusted his glasses with his cooperative hand. "Well, my dear, eh, I am certainly lookink forward to the new performance of, ah, the sub-types after our adjustments," he said, looking to Sophie's C-Type in it's berth. "Actually, mein oververked associate Mr. Banner was a great help in that, eh, regard," he said, talking up his partner. A small pip of red was slowly creeping outward from the end of the pen in his pocket as he talked.

Al leaned against the railing running along the edges of the open work area where he could look down on the mechanics tinkering with one of the team's Nemos. The deaths and shakeups in his unit's lineup had continued like a macabre parade, and he withdrew emotionally to the point that he felt like he just didn't care any more. For a little while that numbness had scared him, but he had come to accept it in a way. He absentmindedly fiddled with the Cyclops Team patch he always carried, spinning it over his fingers.

Emington had shown he was a good pilot, but eventually Al knew he and Randy both would die. That's the way war worked. Beyond meetings and standard work around the ship he had yet to really speak to Mart of the girl who always had on those dark glasses. He wondered how long it would take for the two replacements to get themselves killed.

As he exited the cockpit of his mobile suit, Wales fumbled with the release catches on his helmet so he could remove the damn thing, after a few second he got the helmet off and took in a deep breath, wiping some sweat off of his brow and running his hands through his hair.

"I know its only a simulation but that was intense" he muttered as he looked up at the Nemo cannons' head and shoulder weapon. "at least i managed not to be a weak link." after taking a few more deep breaths he looked over at the other Nemo's that were assigned to his CO and squadmate, waiting for the pair to come out so he could compare notes.

--Outside Team 2's Ready Room--

The next operation was drawing closer, and Wes was one amongst many who wasn't looking forward to it. Curren has been out of the loop for awhile, trying not to think too much about the upcoming battle. It didn't help though that Eddie was too lazy to hold an actual team meeting, which meant that Wes and the rest of Team 2 had to carry around the briefing papers to look over them and only heightened Wes' anxiety.

Wes arrived outside the Ready Room just as Marvin stepped out and walked in the other direction. He could hear Eddie's music blasting from inside the room ("There's one guy who doesn't seem bothered by this mission," He thought to himself), and with a sigh Wes stepped in to return the papers to his CO.

Eddie drained his soda as the door closed behind Marvin, following it with a yawn and burp. He shook his head again and got up to get another drink, still stretching his arms to deal with the stiffness from sleeping on the couch. The sugar and caffeine started hitting his system as he grabbed another soda, and saw the door open. Wes stepped in with a bunch of briefing papers to return to the pile on the table. Eckardy grinned around his soda and gave him a quick wave as he walked back to the couch and turned the music down to a more reasonable level before falling on the couch.

Eddie set his drink tube on the floor next to the stereo remote, and started feeling under the couch for something. "How's it goin', Wes?" He asked as he found the small paperback novel he had been looking for.

Fritz thumbed through the loose packet of papers, trying to decide what to go over that afternoon. Despite starting out with a broad array of potential plans and projected situations, since leaving Luna things had cleared up enough that they now only had to focus on one idea. Whether or not Quattro succeeded in his latest attempt at diplomacy with Axis, the AEUG was preparing for one big operation to seize control of the colony laser - it remained to be seen if the Zeon would be uneasy allies or yet another hurdle. Once the Argama was done scouting ahead, Bright and the others would come up with a final version of the plan.

That all meant that while the materials to which he had access were much less vague than they had been at departure, he was still left briefing his team and the other pilots with information that felt incomplete. He glanced up at Jacob, who was still leaning against the wall next to the door. "Sometimes I think I should have turned down a promotion somewhere," he chuckled, dropping the papers back on the table. He scratched his chin and leaned back against the couch, "Being an NCO wasn't so bad... especially once I got switched over to armor. A little extra duty in the motor pool to drive a tank isn't a bad trade,".

The door pinged and slid open, and Michiko stepped into the room. She smiled and nodded to Jacob as she passed him on the way to the drink machine. "So what's the lesson plan today? Has Quattro convinced the Axis fleet to play nice and help us this time?" she asked as she opened a pouch of fruit juice.

“Oh, you haven't seen...” Sophie smiled, trailing off as she noticed the ink stain. "Have you seen Rem around, doctor?” she asked. Dr. M craned his neck and took a quick look around the hangar to see if Rem was around. “Doctor," Sophie said, calling back his attention, "You've got red on you,”. "Oh, my," he chuckled as he looked down at his shirt. His right hand shot up and grabbed at the pocket. The semi-autonomous limb snatched the pen from his shirt pocket and flung it away before he could take it away with his left hand. "Ja, well..." he said, clicking his tongue at the awkward pause afterward, "I'll get that later. I'm sure Rem is around here somewhere; we got started early today,".

Jacob's brow furrowed at Fritz's comment about his promotions. Promotions were good things, weren't they? Didn't a person join the military thinking that they would eventually attain a high rank? It was certainly somewhere in his priorities. Probably just below getting revenge on the blue Mobile Suit, surviving the war and doing what was right.

He shrugged, though, not wanting to offend his superior officer. "I think driving a tank might be pretty cool. It's just too bad they're completely outdated now that there're Mobile Suits."

He blushed when Michiko entered the room, still highly embarrassed about his behavior during their R&R. He was able to look at her, though. "That's just what we were discussing: whether or not we were going to have to fight Axis after we defeat the Titans."

Being this wasn't the first time Sophie had witnessed the Dr.'s hand behave in an erratic way, she wasn't as surprised when the red pen was flung away by the right hand.

"Oh, my, Ja, well... I'll get that later. I'm sure Rem is around here somewhere; we got started early today."

“I see, well.....” she glanced around the hangar herself before sighing in frustration, “I have to got to the team 2 ready room. If you see him soon, let him know I was looking for him.”

She spun around and then pushed off to float back towards the corridor she had come from to head to the team 2 ready room.

Irene, half asleep watched as the digital clock blinking in and out. The small time teller machine sat on the desk illuminated the darkness by its green LED lights. She blinked her eyes once… twice… All was quiet.

Boredom has taken its toll on Irene’s mind. Another day has passed with her doing nothing worth mentioning. Even though she dislike fighting she cannot helped but to feel frustrated by the lack of action on their part. They had briefings, trainings and simulations, but nothing really counts toward the big thing ahead. No patrols, no scouting, not even news. “It’s been a week,” she protested at the dullness.

"So what's the lesson plan today? Has Quattro convinced the Axis fleet to play nice and help us this time?" Michiko asked, taking a sip of her drink. She sat down opposite Fritz and made a quiet noise of disgust at the sight of the papers piled on the table. Jacob, who seemed to be slowly returning to normal behavior, said, "That's just what we were discussing: whether or not we were going to have to fight Axis after we defeat the Titans,". Fritz blew out a breath and shrugged, "Quattro will do his best, but we need to be ready for the worst. When we form up near Gryps 2, even if Axis is right beside us it won't last,". Michiko nodded, looking down at the drink she held in her lap, "Eventually we won't have a choice...".

"Remember - we've got to take and hold the laser, no matter who tries to stop us," Fritz said, rubbing at the stubble on his chin, "I almost hope Axis gives us a straightforward fight now instead of playing around with us,". He snatched up the container of water he had left perched on the table's edge and took a drink. "Michi, did you see Celeste on your way here?" he asked, wondering where their fourth member was. She shook her head no and explained, "We ate breakfast together but I haven't seen her in a couple of hours,". Fritz nodded, setting the container down on one of the top layer of packets marked VER 1: OP MAELSTROM.

Jacob leaned against the wall, his hands clasped behind his back and his eyes on the ground. He was listening, but wasn't sure what to say or whether he should talk at all. In many ways he was beginning to act normal, but for a different reason. He was no longer quite as unsure of himself as before. Now, he didn't talk a lot because he was contemplating his rather bleak future.

Finally, he did speak up. "We have to prepare for the worst that we can think of," he said with a wry grin, his gaze still on the floor of the ready room. "Because chances are whatever we think is going to happen and whatever the worst we can imagine is, what will really happen is going to be worse."

He looked up then, the bleak look on his face turning to one of embarrassment as he considers the fact that his teammates are probably just worried about the future as he is and don't need a reminder of how uncertain their fate is.
Yep...That's Texas in a nutshell. Why just say "f**k you" when you can put it on a flag?

Behind Al a door hissed open and Randy stepped through, at first shocked seeing his team-mate out and about. Then his face split into a large grin as he walked up and clapped the younger man on the shoulder.

"It's good to see you up and about, Al. It really is." He Moved to the railing and stared down onto the main hanger floor. He looked over at Al and saw that he was fiddling with a small scrap of cloth. Perplexed he asked, "What is you've got there?"

Adam was busy sorting through his gear in his new team's ready room for what felt like the eighth time. The lack of stuff happening was driving him crazy, so he had been sorting and re-sorting his gear. First in his room, now here. He closed the locker door and leaned his head against it. It was all coming to a head, he could feel it, and the pressure was mounting with no way to release. He turned and sat, leaning against the lockers.

Bernard was seated in a corner looking up at the ceiling while Adam was rustling around the room. He was feeling uneasy and swore he heard his name being called. Brushing away the manual which rested on his lap he stood up to go get another cup of coffee.

"I think it's all about to end.." he whispered to Adam as he left the room.

Following the scent of freshly brewed coffee, Bernard makes his way to the lounge and straight to the dispenser. if it wasn't for this stuff, I'd be asleep for a hundred years
