Episode 23 - Play Both Ends [Axis]

- Gryps Space -

- The Bindra -
- Bridge -

Capt. Wald watched through the bridge's windows as the far off shape of the Gwadan began to move away from their position. He kept his hands clasped behind his back, which he knew for a fact made him look more imposing particularly when he had on his helmet. Since they had technically temporarily lost their autonomous status and were acting as part of the Trammel "Fleet", he had to answer to M'Quve. But beyond a few general orders they really hadn't heard much from the fleet's commander. Besides, he knew he only had to answer to Haman-sama. And yet Pizal felt a little disappointed he didn't get to talk to the strange One Year War hero.

For the moment the Bindra was waiting in a defensive formation with the Trammel, M'Quve's modified Endra-class ship, and the Mandra, a third Endra-class. A few small supply transports huddled somewhere behind them where they were not in any danger, closer to the now-Axis controlled colony laser and its other defenders. Not the most imposing presence among the Axis forces, but Capt. Wald was confident they were capable enough to deal with whatever was going to happen at Gryps 2. Indeed, it seemed he was not the only one confident in their abilities - the Trammel Fleet had been given orders to move into a new position the next day some time before noon to help guard the Gwadan during a meeting. With who, he didn't know. But if Haman-sama and the princess needed guards he would have volunteered the ship.

Re: Episode 23 - Play Both Ends [Axis]

Djorn was up to his elbows in the guts of his Gaza-C. Sure there were technicians who were assigned to his machine, but there was nothing quite like fiddling with your Mobile Suit, yourself. Of course, there were times when the engineers were less than pleased with what he did and they always went back to check on the changes he'd made, but as often as not, he was doing something productive.

He didn't have anything else to do while he waited, however. Unless one of the female pilots showed up. Then, he could easily put aside what he was doing to hit on a comrade. He whistled the Zeon anthem as he crossed two wires and blinked as a spark rose.

-bridge-
"Never thought I would see one of those again," Raquel's tone was almost blank when she commented. For her it referred both to seeing a colony itself but, and still more, seeing a colony laser up close again. That monster was truly horrific in the last war when she saw it fired. Probably even more horrific in the memories of those who were on the receiving end of it and survived.

She shook her head. Up-close, Tthe Titans were proving to be even more dangerous than what second-hand sources told.

-hangar-
After her latest bout of going through the ship's supply of lemonade, Pris floated down onto the hangar floor. With her current duties temporarily completed and left to wait for next task or call to action, Pris decided to put herself to her own devices. She pushed off to one side with the toe of her boot and hovered towards an anxious technician, wringing hands and watching Djorn's leg protrude from a Gaza-C.

"Well," Pris began and floated her legs over onto her knees, becoming an additional member to Djorn's audience, "has he electrocuted himself yet? Or how many times has he?"

Re: Episode 23 - Play Both Ends [Axis]

The Bindra, Hangar

After having to scrub stains out of his normal suit from a red liquid, which he initially panicked and thought was blood, that he had floated into in a darkened hallway, Nikolai spent the last few days trying to keep busy. Granted, the last few days had been very prosperous from Axis and his excitement could hardly be contained. If they kept up at this pace they'd be in control of the earth's sphere in no time.

For now the routine was simple: Check on his mobile suit, help out the mechanics if necessary, check the assignment boards, eat lunch, repeat previous tasks, go to bed.

While heading into the hangar to take care of steps one and two, he noticed a little crowd gathering around one of the Gaza-C.

"What's going on?" he asked as he came to a stop by grabbing hold of a protruding hand grip on a near by cart.
"Kamille, if it wasn't for you...." Jerid's last words

Re: Episode 23 - Play Both Ends [Axis]

The tech Pris was talking to was looking on with a mix of bemusement, annoyance and horror. It was something like the look you would give a favored, but vicious dog if it got a hold of one of your shoes.

"Not ye..." he began to answer her question before being cut off by a sharp snap of electricity.

"Summon a beach!" Djorn yelled. Or something to that effect as he snatched his hand away from the nest of wires he'd been fiddling with.

He sprang to his feet and flung the wrench in his other hand down at the panel. Of course, there was no gravity on the ship so rather than just bouncing a bit and then laying there, the wrench went careening and spinning back up towards the ceiling.

Djorn didn't notice, however, as he was too busy berating the machine that had shocked him. He aimed a finger down at it and then informed it in no uncertain terms how horrible, useless and stupid it was. And for effect, he tossed in quite a few expletives to make sure it got the point.

This lasted for probably two minutes before he calmed down. Looking around, he spotted his wrench as it was making its way back toward the floor. Pushing off, he easily intercepted the tool before reaching a catwalk and reversing his trajectory.

Soon enough he was hunched over the panel again, fiddling with it once more, though he continued to mutter angrily at the machine.

Re: Episode 23 - Play Both Ends [Axis]

In the manner of a referee or a sportscaster, Pris threw her hands high into the air as soon as Djorn yelped and jumped from the tangle of wires. Her mouth pantomimed ‘GOOOOOOAAAALLLL’ at the anticipated occurrence. It was a likely pleased affair until Djorn’s verbal counterattack upon the machine.

A grimace came to Pris’ face and her arms almost began to slunk downwards and she almost wanted to staple her hands to her ears at the berating. “I didn’t know there was that much profanity in a single culture or even one language,” speaking to Nikolai and the technician in a surprised tone verging on marveled. Even more so as he continued for almost two full minutes straight without a pause.

Pris was surprised that Djorn didn’t eventually pass out or continue for another full minute with his berating once he came to a halt. But she blinked as the pilot went back to panel to finish trying to break the machine than step aside. “Heh,” she shook her head, “you’d think they were married. Especially if that thing could talk back to him.”

Every now and then as the captain studied the view of Gryps 2 and surrounding space, he had the urge to give an order to move the ship to a position closer to the Gwadan or somewhere they could better observe the activity. Then he remembered they were taking orders again and he couldn't move the ship of his own volition. Vada's console began to make noise as the ship received an incoming transmission, momentarily taking Pizal's mind of his perceived loss of power. "Sir, it's Capt. M'Quve," Vada announced, turning to wait for orders. Capt. Wald nodded emphatically and waved for him to put it on the viewscreen as he glided into position.

The main screen switched over just as Pizal drew himself up into proper posture in front of his command chair. The camera showed a small view of the Trammel's bridge, focused on M'Quve seated in his own chair. Capt. M'Quve himself was dressed in a fine, custom Axis uniform made in an elegant dark blue fabric, complete with some sort of cravat. He looked a little different from the pictures Pizal had seen. He was, of course, nearly a decade older, and his hair was now cut closer and drawn back. "Sir!" Capt. Wald said, coming to attention.

"Yes, captain," M'Quve said, waving away a salute, "Have you prepared for our maneuvers tomorrow?". Pizal was a little surprised at his voice. It was quite a bit less forceful than he was expecting - he almost sounded more like an arrogant professor than a military officer. "Of course, sir. The Bindra is ready to protect Princess M--" Wald began to answer. M'Quve cut him off with a "Hmm,". He moved his hands from the arms of his chair and laced them together in his lap. "I want you to make it clear to your pilots how important this operation is, Capt. Wald. Don't disappoint me," he said, tilting his head slightly.

Wald frowned slightly and answered, "We won't fail Haman-sama, sir, or her highness. You can count on my ship and my crew,".

Gwen who was busy doing a super secret super duper amazingly highest security clearance project ever was stunned at what had just happened. Re: Episode 23 - Play Both Ends [Axis]

~January 25~
~08:08 CUT~

- Gryps Space, Near the Gwadan -

- The Bindra -
- Bridge -

Pizal Wald, in an immaculate pressed uniform with a new cape and helmet, stood with his boots' toes anchored under a rung on the bridge 'floor' in a spot where he could see the bank of monitors overhead as well as the view through the main bridge windows. The Trammel unit was spread out in a line not terribly far behind the flagship, putting them in a position somewhere between Axis and Gryps 2. The ship's Gaza team was on standby (and to be honest Wald secretly hoped for a reason to put them to use), but as part of their briefings had been instructed that the Gwadan's MS teams were handling security and that their unit was only to be called in in the case of an emergency.

The information M'Quve had handed down to his two subordinate captains wasn't exactly crystal clear, but Wald knew Haman-sama was juggling meetings this morning. He was impressed with her ability to handle both Char Aznable and one of the Titans' top cronies - only someone with her leadership abilities and strong character could do such a thing. That point he had driven home during the pilots' briefing, but Wald wasn't a skilled enough officer to realize he may have been wasting his time and putting his crew in danger espousing Haman and the Princess' virtues instead of giving concrete tactical instruction.

Graden's team had been told the most important parts what Wald knew, but they were still all relatively inexperienced regardless of the quality of his ability as a captain. Wald was distracted in particular by the news Char Aznable was aboard the flagship. Even though he was cooperating with the AEUG, it was still a personal goal of Pizal's to meet the Red Comet after seeing him briefly once years ago on Axis. It all combined to put him just on the verge of being out of his league. Voice traffic from the other Endra-class ships and the Gwadan itself flooded through the speakers on the bridge, most of it routine up to that point aside from the arrival of Paptimus Scirocco and his escort.

"G-Defenser, you are cleared to land."

"What was that?" the captain perked up, looking slightly concerned as he turned to Vada. The comm tech listened to his own headphones for a moment before answering, "Captain, Haman-sama has given the AEUG permission to have an observer present at her meeting with Scirocco,". Pizal's face scrunched up as if he detected a foul odor, and he complained, "Why is this man so important that he deserves a meeting with Haman-sama AND the AEUG wants to be there?". From one of the monitors not showing the cluster of ships and MS near the Gwadan, Capt. Bacon on the Mandra piped up to answer, "Because Jamitov Hymem has seen fit to insert himself into the talks, Wald. You were supposed to read the revised material that was sent out this morning,".

"So that devil is coming..." Pizal muttered, ignoring the reprimand. Vada added, "Sir, that's part of the reason the start of the meeting has been delayed. Scirocco has arrived but they're waiting on Jamitov,". "Thank God that Princess Mineva is being moved to the Gwanban," Wald said, staring out the windows, "To have her highness aboard the same ship as Jamitov Hymem would be unforgivable,". A bright thruster flare arced down through the MS escort around the flagship, headed for the underside where the hangar openings were located. "Raquel," Wald said, turning slowly from the windows, "Make sure we're ready to move at a moment's notice...".

Re: Episode 23 - Play Both Ends [Axis]

Djorn sat within his Gaza, his heart pounding and his mouth dry with anticipation. He gripped the controls eagerly. The moment of his destiny was coming soon. He was certain that he was about to get to prove his worth to Axis and the glory of Axis, itself.

Perhaps he was the only one, but Wald's pre-mission speech actually was inspiring to Djorn. It did not occur to him that more tactical material would have been useful. The Captain reminding them of how important their mission was and how likely they were to achieve victory was simply logical.

Thus, Djorn Nachtjaeger sat ready to lay waste to all the enemies of Axis, whether they happened to operate under the name of Titans or AEUG. All that he needed now was an excuse to shoot someone or an order from a superior officer.

Matthew floated beside the open cockpit of his Gaza with a soda in hand. He looks out impatiently on the hanger hoping to leave soon and prove his loyalty to Lady Haman and Princess Mineva.

Bored to tears from the wait and speech which he ignored by going over data from the last encounter in order to improve his handling of the suit, Matthew needed to stretch his legs. It was nerves that almost impaired his piloting ability, but this time he is prepared to face any challenge.

Re: Episode 23 - Play Both Ends [Axis]

—Bridge—
“Aye aye sir!” Raquel’s voice pinged as she was so suddenly snapped from her inattentive focus, anxiously bouncing in her seat a few times at the heaviness of their situation. It was nerve racking as it was historic. If this matter became royally fouled up at the meeting she did not doubt that the fallout could be horrifically epic in scope. At best Raquel hoped that if anything thing went wrong it would be nothing greater than a lot of quarreling and hardly any negotiations in what could be days of ulcer inducing talks.

“Keeping the car engine warm,” she replied using an Earthoid expression when those in the colder regions of the planet left their vehicles idle.

—Hangar—
“Sooooooo~…” Pris spoke to a corner screen displaying Djorn after inside her Gaza moments after she settled in. “Were you given any particular instructions in case of emergency?” Snapping her helmet on.

“I just want to make sure I have our procedures straight is all, sir,” quickly covering herself from any likely reprimand. After all, attentive as she looked Pris did zone out once the captain did little but go on and on and on about Haman that she pegged him as one of those boys who would have Haman’s face pasted over the body of a pinup model. If he was a pilot.

Fanboys, she thought derisively before she tuned Wald out until she caught anything relevant before their dismissal to standby.

The captain had really laid it on thick, but Nikolai ate it all up. Haman was the one who would help restore Princess Mineva to her rightful throne and allow Zeon to return to its once glorious position of Spacenoid independence. If the other colonies didn't fall in line afterwards, they'd be dealt with just as swiftly as they would soon do with the Titans.

“Hey Korbel," he called to Matthew from the cockpit hatch to his Gaza-C he was standing in, "Where did you hear that saying? Is that like a comic book characters speech or something?"

“Hey Korbel, where did you hear that saying? Is that like a comic book characters speech or something?"

Unaware that he was being heard, instead of getting irritated Matthew suppressed his initial feelings and easily became nostalgic. "Eh? It was something my brother said in a final transmission to my family. He was stationed in Africa at the time. I don't remember much but from what I've been told they kept fighting against all odds but a few days later we lost the Earth...abandoning all of them. I think what he meant was that bad things don't last forever. Nikolai, one day when this war finally ends we'll be the ones calling the shots."

Sipping the soda, Matthew looks over at the Lt. Cmdr's Gaza for any signs that will put the squad in action soon.

Re: Episode 23 - Play Both Ends [Axis]

Djorn stopped humming the Axis Anthem when Pris spoke to him. His eyes went down to the screen where her face appeared and he quickly raised the visor on his helmet, removing the slightly obscuring pane to show his face completely.

"Eh?" he asked, though he had a smile for her. "What sort of emergency could possibly come up? We are piloting superior Axis technology. The only emergency that I can think of is if we run out of targets too quickly.

"If you get worried, just shoot any Mobile Suit that isn't a Gaza and follow me."

"But why, sir? Doesn't this simply put her highness in danger?" Wald protested to the image of M'Quve taking up the main monitor. The fleet's commander had a look on his face that was a mixture of aggravation and disgust. M'Quve seemed to sigh heavily at Wald's bothersome pestering, and he reached up to the lapel of his uniform to gently touch the delicate pink rose pinned there. "Capt. Wald, don't concern yourself with the safety of the princess - you already know she's being moved. Just follow instructions and please, stop bothering me with questions you know the answer to," he said as if he were scolding a child.

Pizal shrank away from the rebuke but managed to keep his overall composure. "Of course, sir. It's just that I don't understand why--" he began. M'Quve raised a hand and shut his eyes, cutting off Wald. "Captain, for the last time - return to your duties. Haman is doing everything here for a reason, and our fleet is in position to assist. Don't think until I tell you to, Wald, you're a danger to yourself and others getting yourself worked up,". The channel closed before Wald could speak again.

Capt. Wald spun away from the display as it switched back to a tactical view, self consciously tugging his tunic down and brushing imaginary dirt from his gloves. A tad red in the face, he silently moved closer to Raquel's station to go back to watching the flagship through the windows.

Initially, Nikolai felt embarrassed for assuming that what Matthew had said was some cliché comic character jargon. But as he listened to the explanation he began to understand what the saying meant.

"Nikolai, one day when this war finally ends we'll be the ones calling the shots."

"That's something I could get behind," he said with a smile, "I think we could do a good job of it too. Just a matter of avoiding the same mistakes our predecessors made."

Anything is ever likely to happen, she wanted to say to him. As a veteran Djorn should have been use to that but it seemed like he was taken by eagerness at the moment. Yet Pris nodded and gave Djorn a nervous smile at the words “superior Axis technology.”

Though Pris was leaning toward the Gaza not cartoonish drifting to pieces on her, she was still a touch distrustful of these new fangled transforming mobile suits. “Understood sir.”

—Bridge—
Raquel did not raise so much as an eyebrow at the defeated Wald’s drifting approach to her station. So that is M’Quve, she noted to herself. They were right, he was rather waifish and effete looking, though the words relayed to her about his appearance were more crude and demeaning in tone. Aloof and easily annoyed too.

“Veteran’s intuition, sir?” Still clueless as to her captain’s service record in the One Year War beyond the fact that he is labeled a veteran. “Or just a survivor’s instinct?” Concerning his displeasure of the meeting and its attendants and marking it more to his possible experience than zealous loyalty or post-war grudges or whatever failings were on his part.

Djorn spared a glance for Gwen in his panoramic cockpit. The juicy apple she was gobbling down did look appealing, but he was far too excited to think about eating at the moment. It would just have to be a treat for when he got back.

"We have been given the unique opportunity to prove that Axis has not only the technological and military superiority over these squabbling factions of dirt lovers but also the moral high ground as well. Nothing can go wrong because we have right on our side. We fight for freedom and all the ships and mobile suits in the solar system cannot stand against that!" he declared, giving his best pep talk to the still uncertain sounding Pris.
