Each weapon type is perfectly viable given enough upgrading, though individual weapons in may be somewhat lacking. The Zaku's MMP, for example, is a rather underwhelming machine gun.

I think it would be more apt to say that Gundam tends towards the "war is hell" message rather than being straight up anti war. To varying degrees depending on specific series of course.
