Re: Expanding My Horizons
I'd still suggest ZZ, even if you have the episode summaries memorized it's not the same as seeing it. I'm also a big fan of Dragonar, and it's Gundam-y enough that it'll be a snap for you to take to the setting since the studio wanted another Gundam and made Dragonar. I feel like I have to also sug...

Re: Expanding My Horizons
Watch ZZ and then find a way to deal with your newfound passive-aggressive anger at all the people that haven't seen it that spend too much time trying to convince people it's bad. If you can sit through Seed Destiny and G-Saviour then ZZ will be so easy that using the word "easy" is an in...

Re: NEW RPG THREAD DISCUSSION
We've always allowed the option to join as ship captains, other crew, or non-combat characters in TftF and one of the AEUG vessels was actually controlled by a player for a while before he disappeared, leaving us with the situation of adopting yet another character not of our own creation. We even c...

Re: Stuff You Can't Believe You Just Figured Out
From what I understand, it's long been much more acceptable in Japan for composers to, uh, "borrow" musically from other sources. A recent controversy that comes to mind is Toei giving Kenji Yamamoto the boot from composing new BGM for Dragonball Kai after admitting that a lot of his piece...

Re: Stuff You Can't Believe You Just Figured Out
In Gundam, eventually everyone is named for what they do. Sort of like the way things used to be but taken to an absurd extreme. 'Helm' pilots the ship! 'Husher' fires the guns! 'Full Frontal', uh... I'll get back to that one. 'Uragang' accuses people of organized street crime! 'Bright Noa' intellig...

Re: Victory Gundam
Did the staff on G Gundam really take the franchise THAT seriously? I know the SRS BIZNS fans tend to dislike it on principle ... I've always seen G Gundam as one of the best uses of the "alternate universe" concept, only really surpassed by Turn-A. In my experience with the fandom, I'd a...

Re: GPO-2 Backup Weapons....
The Antarctic Treaty was between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, the latter of which ceased to exist after the war. It doesn't apply after 0079, which is why it was okay for the Londo Bell to huck nukes around in 0093.

Re: GPO-2 Backup Weapons....
I found this tidbit on the Japanese Gundam wiki, which seems to usually be more trustworthy than the English one: "核兵器 の使用は、 南極条約 をもって禁止されていたが、その後も ジオン公国軍 は核兵器を使用した実績があったため、今後も用いられることを想定してその対策として計画が進められた。" From which I understand something along the lines of: "The use of nuclear weapo...

Re: How sympatheic or evil should Gundam antagonists be?
The Titans are something that always bothered me, the reason they came about was because the spacenoids went crazy and killed half of humanity while at the same time dropping the colony on the Earth. What did people expect to happen? Earthnoids had to make sure the Zeon and any other crazy spacenoi...

Re: The Official Gundam AGE Anime Thread AGE-6
The way he does it implies only those who know how to fight for survival deserve to live. The problem is the ability to fight for survival might not be the highest point of humanity that you want to select. And that sort of thing (usually) mistakenly ties into the assumption that fittest means stro...

Re: The Official Gundam AGE Anime Thread AGE-6
That's not how "survival of the fittest" works anyway - Spencer meant "fit" as in "suited/adapted for the environment", not strongest. And deliberately destroying or altering something to force results is about as far away from natural selection as you can get.

Re: Impressions of Gundam 0083
My personal favorite 'Anavel Gato is a flat character' moment has to be a cutscene from Gihren's Greed (I think it was, it's been a while) where Mr. Gato gives a full-on Nazi salute with his "sieg Zeon" instead of the normal closed fist.

"Man... I wonder if it's right to kill all these people in the name of a dead, genocidal despot years after a war we lost. There have been so many unfortunate deaths already... Oh well, 'Sieg Zeon' I guess." **pulls trigger** "Hey guys, get the colonies ready!"
