Re: Attack on Titan
What she really needs is more reason for existence beyond Eren and Armin. Yes, this precisely. I suppose that's also what some of the fandom has been indirectly griping about her; Mikasa's character, for whatever background-related reasons we've seen and discussed, remains wholly attached to Eren (...

Re: Attack on Titan
Moving along, what's the internet's opinion of Mikasa? I haven't really looked into it. She is a badass, no doubt, and on top of that she doesn't fall into the "tough girls are all bitches" hole. I'd imagine she's quite popular however I know her dedication to a man is the sort of thing t...

The new GiTS series - Ghost in the Shell: Arise
Just as I was moaning about not finding any new anime the follow, I suddenly run across news of a new GiTS show. Since all I have to go on is ANN and Wikipedia on the show, could someone in the know shed some further light on it? Apparently four OVAs coming, re-imagining the story to a degree? Re-im...

Re: Valvrave The Liberator
I gave this show a quick glance, since it's been greatly talked about here in MAHQ and was new Sunrise mecha show. I had hoped something like Code Geass , but found Valvrave completely below my viewing bracket. This is not the first time, of course, but the jarring feeling of watching something that...

Re: Attack on Titan
A-HA! An episode with actual progress. I haven't seen any for so long I almost forgot how it felt like and how good AoT could be when it gets its act together. Soma mentioned about not finding the slowness in progress noticeable a few posts back; to me it was very noticeable, irritating and worrying...

Aaw, poop. I did rush for this thread the second I saw you'd posted something.
Take your time. Maybe give us another little teaser?

Re: Zeon an allegory for japan?
I may be interpreting Zeonista 's point as much as we've been interpreting intent (historical or fictional) in this thread here, but my feeling is that the mechanisms of power Tomino and other Gundam-creators delve into are not limited to just space-nazis or space-imperial-japan. These are fairly re...

Re: Attack on Titan
Right, I'm starting to get all the anxiousness you guys said about the pacing. In the last 4 episodes we've got about one episode's worth of getting anywhere. Speeches, posing, severe glances and all that is basic anime stock, but when compared to the pacing on eps 1-7 (especially eps 1-5!), eps 8-1...

Re: Strike Rouge Phoenix
For Destiny HD, maybe they use it for the very quick bashing it gets when Kira takes it to orbit to get the Strike Freedom. Not much sense parading out a new kit only for it to get bashed, but then again I don't understand how kit marketing works.

Re: Zeon an allegory for japan?
My original understanding was that SEED bombed in the US due to poor management (timeslots, advertising, etc.), not politically/culturally subversive content. I find myself agreeing with AmuroNT1 's opinion here, that one shouldn't try too hard to read into the real-world politic(al opinion)s into w...

Re: Attack on Titan
Ah, thanks Amion , I suppose. :P I'm guessing there will be quite a bit of conflict between this fresh new bunch of soldiers, and the established social hierarchy of the city (that at least has been hinted at). It would fit the show's general militaristic vibe to show how young soldiers can see the ...

Re: Attack on Titan
Try to keep the manga-stuff in spoiler-tags (like you so far), guys. :) For me episode 5 was the clincher for wanting to watch this series in earnest. It even took me several hours to realize that my hopes of them doing a protagonist switch to the character I found more intriguing compared to the sh...

Re: The little Evangelion 3.33 thread
It was pretty to watch indeed. Just not pleasing at all to think about. :P New stuff has happened, as with timeskips tends to be the case. What I found so very weird was that no one, absolutely no one, told Shinji anything, aside from Kaworu. Then they curse him when the godfather of all angsty mech...

Hitting Macchiavelli's Prince as light reading.
I'd read it years ago, and hadn't really realized what I'd been reading. I'm doing a better job of it now.

Re: Star Trek into Darkness
OK, so I saw it too. Paid good money for an early screening (early by our standards, mind you). First off, the good. It's a good, entertaining action movie with pretty visuals. It's set in space so it fulfills some of the expectations of Trek and sci-fi. The first part of the movie especially felt l...

Re: Comic Books (other than manga)
Comic studies are actually rearing their head big time right now in popular culture research. I was invited to a conference that dealt with different aspects of comics recently, and I could consider my mind blown afterwards. Yeah, the first thought most of you will have, like I did, is that comics a...

Re: Star Trek into Darkness
Whatever explanations I give are by default very subjective. I am desperately trying not to whine about everything being great before, while everything today is shit, and am aware that I might come across as doing exactly that. :D I suppose the best way to summarize this is to contextualize Trek as ...
