I think to get to the root of your question. Why are the novels so different? You have to ask Mr. Tomino himself. It looks like it's not public knowledge. All we have is speculation.

I watched the first five episodes. It was pretty good story I think and like Ryujin story trumps everything for me. If you have a great story I wouldn't care if you used stick figures. I think I pretty much know all the mysteries the story has but I'm enjoying the journey to get to the reveals.
