Re: GUNDAM BUILD FIGHTERS : BATTLOGUE/GM's Counterattack

This was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to more episodes of this, as the writers/director seem to have just the right tongue-in-cheek attitude to make this fly without feeling like pandering. The Zaku is a little bit run-of-the-mill compared to a lot of Build Fighters customs, but I'm fine with t...

Re: Gundam 0083 Rebellion manga

Started translating Zeta Define, and decided to see if I could find anything more recent than Volume 11, which released more than a year ago. Nothing turned up. Does anyone know if this is still ongoing, or did they drop it mid-series?

Re: The Elitism of UC Gundam Fans?

It's funny; fifteen or twenty years ago I acknowledged being a UC Elitist (or at least, my fandom was limited to the UC Timeline--I don't know that I'd have gone so far as to call myself an Elitist), and now the stuff they're doing with UC is just about my least favorite piece of the franchise the l...

Re: The Official Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Anime Thread Mk IV

I love IBO and a ton of people are hating on it so I am going to explain this once and for all. A lot of people look towards anime as an easy form of escapism, a quick way to get away from the hassles of the real world. They don't care about what the show has to say or what it's trying to do, just ...

Re: Gundam no Reconguista Movies Thread?

I think I'm in the opposite boat, actually. I normally wouldn't be very interested in the movie retelling of a recently-released series--even one that badly needs fixing. But after the more plot-focused IBO and the criminally over-condensed Thunderbolt, I find that I'm actually very excited to revis...

Here's what I was referring to, from Tomino himself at the Rome convention: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2017-04-25/yoshiyuki-tomino-discusses-new-g-reco-movies-anime-and-film-industries/.115248 "The way that things are actually progressing is a secret, but this isn't anything too i...

Re: Gundam Jamitov Goals

I was always under the impression that Jamitov didn't have much loyalty toward either Earthnoid or Spacenoid causes; he just wanted to stir up enough unrest that he could step in and fill a power vacuum. As for what Scirocco says, I don't remember the line itself or who he said it to, but he's a mas...

Re: ID-0

Yeah, Maya may very well improve, which is what I'm hoping for. Like I said, I'm loving the concept and the design work so far, so I really want to be able to stick with it, but man, that is exactly the kind of character that can kill it for me.

Re: ID-0

Love the mecha designs, really like where they're going with it conceptually, but I don't like the protagonist at all, and that could sink it for me. I'll give it a few more episodes, but I'm not optimistic.

Re: The Official Gundam Thunderbolt Anime Thread Mk I

Hated Season 1, and I can't say Season 2 is fixing my opinions of it. It's a shame, because there's some great designs coming out of this series, and the action is mostly well animated, but the lack of any real character writing means there's no dramatic tension to any of it.

Re: Gundam no Reconguista Movies Thread?

Is the second movie confirmed? I guess confirmed to be in the plan, at least, but from what I read, he was saying that the second would either happen or not based on the success of the first one.

Re: The Official Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Anime Thread Mk IV

Yeah, I think the problem with Hush is that he is built up at all when there's no narrative payoff for the setup. We can frame it either way--either the problem is that they never pay off the setup, or the problem is that that they wasted setup on a character with no payoff--but it's poor writing fr...

Re: The Official Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Anime Thread Mk IV

But that how I feel Honestly, it sounds like you're just self-agitating over the fact that Hush's development played against the shounen-style "Imma be the very best ___ 'cause I'm young and mad at the world" once reality intervened. I would recommend you watch the show for what it actual...

Re: The Official Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Anime Thread Mk IV

Areku: I mostly agree with you, though my negative opinions aren't quite as strong. I feel like they had a great world-building team, and then the writing just had no idea what to do, and did a lot of treading water, and then at the last minute realized they needed to actually GET somewhere and rush...

Re: The Official Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Anime Thread Mk IV

Yeah, I think politically IBO gets most of it right for most of the series. It nails the colonialism themes early-on, and I think that--along with the Mars setting--are some of what the series does best.

Re: The Official Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Anime Thread Mk IV

If they didn't give themselves enough time to properly tell the conclusion of their story, then I'd say that's another sign of poor writing leading up to the finale. I don't remember Seed's ending (it's been more than a decade since I watched it); I do remember I didn't like the show much, and as a ...

Re: The Official Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Anime Thread Mk IV

I don't know, maybe people expected better plotting across an entire season so that we don't wind up with an ending where the only options are "poorly written" and "even worse"?

Re: How can we have another long-running toy franchise?

Oh definitely, the fantasy element is crucial to the success of both Gundam and Star Wars. So much so that Star Wars is often cited as being a fantasy story that just uses the trappings of sci-fi, and not science fiction in and of itself at all. I'm not sure I'd say that it's the spiritual nature of...

Re: Gundam 0083 Rebellion manga

I just started reading 0083 Rebellion and Zeta Define this week. The Stardust Memory OVA is a series that I've never liked very much as a story, but for whatever reason the aesthetic has always stood out in my memory as a fantastic representation of franchise. I'm only a couple of chapters into the ...
