Re: Eastern and Western Mecha
I have to agree with thewastedyouth, it may not be *simple*, per se, but a lot of the time the American/Western emphasis is on strength rather than dexterity. That lends itself to more machine-like fighters rather than humanoid/animalistic ones But then you run into Heavy Gear, and suddenly all bet...

Re: the dubbing discussion thread
It really depends on the show, and also depends on how it was translated- if the dub is just a straight translation, I'll probably go sub- however, if the dub script has a bit of its own flavor to it, like with Nadesico, I'll probably go dub.

Re: What's Your Current Anime? Mk III
The entire series of Sailor Moon came into my hands recently (subbed), so decided to give that a go.
There are now three series that I can tolerate sticking with for 100+ episodes. Fist of the North Star, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and now Sailor Moon.

Re: Railguns in the Universal Century?
Yeah, I went back through and decided to catalog known I-field users in the UC, animation only. Big Zam Neue Ziel GP-03 Orchis Quin Mantha Rafflesia Victory 2 w/Assault module That's six battlefield units in seventy years, all of which were one-off machines. I-Fields are not a major strategic consid...

Re: Stuff You Can't Believe You Just Figured Out
I noticed that certain factions in gundam universes have certain colors of their beam weaponry. In Universal Century the Federations(and later Fed related factions) beams are pink, while Zeons(and later Zeon related Factions) are yellow. One of the few exceptions is the GP02 whose beam sabers are g...

Re: Railguns in the Universal Century?
There is also a third problem with railguns- they generate an enormous amount of heat and recoil, and one of the constant problems with railgun engineering has been the fact that they wear out far more quickly than other conventional solid weapons. This might well be triple in space, where it's far ...

Re: Gundam cliches you could do without?
I think I understand your point, but problem is, if MS doesn't has vast advantage, people won't bother with them. They will just stick to fighter and battleship. I guess what you want isn't really dangerous battleship (for example, one that can make 360 degree spin while beam spamming in less than ...

Re: How sympatheic or evil should Gundam antagonists be?
For me, it's the fine line between empathy and sympathy.
Basically, the show should do a good job of having you see where the villain is coming from, but it shouldn't go out of its way to try and make the audience agree with his inevitably crackerjack ideas, because that way lies crazytown.

Re: Gundam cliches you could do without?
Then there won't be a reason to use MS. People will stick to warship, and you get AU version of Yamato instead. I'm not talking about "Impossible", I'm talking about "MS's not being able to derp their way to victory by the mere virtue of being MS's." What I'm really talking abou...

Re: Gundam cliches you could do without?
uh, say what now? Both the Archangel and the Ptolemaios II were some of the most overpowered warships I've ever seen. Hell, even the Diva from AGE has been doing pretty well for a ship banking on 50 years old. Oh, while it's fairly certain that any ships used by the main characters will make it pre...

I could do without the totally weaksauce warships. I understand the targeting problems in UC, but nothing else really has an excuse.
