In general transformable units are faster due to their transformed state giving more maneuverability than the humanoid forms of non-transformable MS. Some exceptions are really fast units like Destiny.

Since funnels and whatnot are controlled mentally by the suit's pilot, wouldn't you still need the swordsmanship skills to control the [insert remote weapon here]? This didn't seem that certain for advanced DRAGOON type weapons, as remarked by Dullindal that it doesn't need pilots with specific men...

ok just to make it clear, i didn't mean equip every zaku(sorry if i made it sound that way) with a heat sword. But it seems rather pointless to have like what? 20-50+ of them and not give them to Zaku's(or even doms) in the front line. Clarification taken. But wait...what's this about having 20-50+...

The Zakus had heat hawks...and they intend to use it. I agree with that. As said before re-outfitting a MS weaponry for combat when they're already deployed is not very effective. I think the heat swords are not that much into effect in battles since then as battles tend to use long-ranged weaponry ...
