Re: Forgotten mecha shows?
Anyone here have watched Gonzo shows back in the early 2000s? They have got Gravion, and to a lesser extend, Burst Angels and Samurai 7. I always like Gonzo for their "trashiness"--they put so much effort in the animations, but a lot of times their stories and characters stuck in the 1980s and 90s ...

Re: Forgotten mecha shows?
The interesting thing about Brain Powered these days to me is that it shared a very similar main setup/theme to the far more popular show Darling in the Franxx, focusing a lot on demographic collapse. I always felt this was just such an odd topic for Tomino to go with for a mecha show and he goes s...

Re: What's Next for Gundam Anime?
i agree totally. I think AU's should still be done. I don't think they should do-away with them completely. but i think they've done EVERYTYPE of AU at this point. they need to take a break from it. I know my opinion's not shared by everyone, but the most recent Gundam AU show in Iron Blooded Orpha...

Re: Forgotten mecha shows?
Catching up on this thread! Bokurano? I watched this for the first time within the last couple of months and loved it. One of the best mecha shows I've seen in many years. I will admit that is more due to the premise and characters, the mecha battles leave a lot to be desired and tend to be rather s...

Re: Evangelion's Netflix Dub
The Death and Rebirth "recap" movie originally came out because Gainax wasn't able to get End of Evangelion completed on time. They put it out to hold people over. The first part, "Death" is a recap of the TV series, with a framing device (the children playing musical instruments) as well as either ...

Re: Evangelion's Netflix Dub
A little late to the party, but I've been slowly working my way through the new dub (22 episodes in), and while the original Japanese language version is still clearly the superior version, the new dub is considerably better from a casting standpoint than the original ADV dub, which was absolute tra...

Re: Watching some old school mecha anime
^ I'm the one who wrote them! :P I am working my way through the bluray now as well (up to episode 29). Still hard to believe the day is here when I have an official US bluray release of Ideon in my hands. I remember when all that was available was raw VHS tapes with no subs. I think while it has so...

Re: Watching some old school mecha anime
but the antagonism by the general public to the Beal family was unique. Instead of being greeted like heroes, they were chastised, criticized and demonized by even their close friends. It's easy to wave away the collateral damage in these super robot shows, but not here. Cities are destroyed, homes...

Have no familiarity with original Gridman, but have found this show to be a lot of fun. 9 episodes in, kinda sad that its almost over!

Re: The lack of combining mecha on the MAHQ website
I'd argue the Beck the Great RX3 from The Big O straddles the line between real and super robot... and was basically a joke in-series that got one-shotted because it tried a super robot combiner sequence against a combat pragmatist who was having NONE of that sh*t (and spent their lengthy combinati...

Re: Watching some old school mecha anime
On the negative side, there were WAY too many generals on the Buff Clan side. All of them are overconfident, all of them under estimate the Solo ship, and most of them die within the episode they were introduced in. I swear one of them looked like a hippie, but I can barely remember anyone else. Wh...

Re: Watching some old school mecha anime
I'm a big Ideon fan, going back 15+ years at this point, but won't deny that the show has its flaws. I'm a bit softer on it than Chris is, I think the first 10 or episodes are a real slog, but things pick up quite a bit after that with the occasional down note. No questions asked, Mobile Suit Gundam...

Re: Darling in the FranXX
The first half was intriguing but the show started to lose me with the revelations about Hiro's and Zero Two's past. For me that was one of the best parts of the show. I really liked their backstory and where they ended up going with it, if anything it helped cover up some of their more notable fla...

Re: Darling in the FranXX
^ Actually I get more of a Gurren Lagann vibe from it, although since Trigger was involved in the show it isn't all that surprising as they had a hand on all three shows. If anything some of the criticism I've seen online is that too many similar themes or plot points or showing up in their works. A...

9 episodes in. I'm torn. Design-wise, the series is amazing. Things look gorgeous throughout. The mecha design reminds me a lot of Star Driver, whose mecha design was really strong, probably not much of a surprise since I hear they have the same designer. The Klaxosaurs are interesting as well. Love...

Congrats and good luck with the retirement! Being in a position where I do an absurdly large amount of travel for work, listening to podcasts is one of the ways I help keep myself sane during all the long drives and plane rides I'm on. While I admittingly listen a lot more to other podcasts on subje...

Re: Gundam no Reconguista Movies Thread?
will we get more mobile suit toilets??? I hope so also I noticed Tomino likes redheads and this probably came up in the 90s with characters like Cecily(f91), Hime(Brain Powered) and Aids (Reconguista). Oh, it was certainly well before that; Sheryl Formosa (Ideon), Marvel Frozen (Dunbine), Gaw Ha Le...

Re: New Code Geass sequel announced, recaps for 2017
I'm torn, I enjoyed both seasons quite a lot and especially liked the ending with Lelouch dying. Seeing that retconned wouldn't make me happy. Still, they wouldn't do it without him. I'm not completely opposed to sequels several years after the fact (Eureka Seven AO for example I didn't find anywher...
