In 2016 they found a mysterious dark hole in space (not a black hole mind you) and heard a strange melody coming from it. They decided to go in and investigate and where never heard from again... at least in this universe.

This was translated from an insert in the Japanese version of the PS2 DYRL game, so its the closest we've got to an official line.
