Bandai will never learn or use ideas from these guys. I love panel lines but Bandai just doesnt know how to do them. MG OYW Gundam has the most panel lines on a MG iv ever seen and theyre all uninspired and really muck up the design if one were to line them all even in light colours. But these guys like G-Sys and VP, etc are incrdibly good at it. I think its due to them adding details simply for the sake of making sure its cool. Bandai on the other hand has to worry about their product fitting in with the story whence it came. So, we will never see the more sexy details like in the above link such as the vernier ignition pins.

I personally feel these two pics have a some sort of a UC feel to it.

Now this is just my own opinion here, but I feel that there is too much going on with this, to the detriment of the model.

From a technical standpoint, it is extremely competent and impressive work. But aesthetically, I feel that it seems to be in love with it's own detail overload. Sure, it looks good and is quite impressive but the details obscure the overall shape of the kit. It's as if my eye doesn't know where to go next as the details drag it all over the place.

One thing about classic designs, is that you can strip them down to their bare essentials and still maintain the immediate recognition of that design.
Prime examples being the Zaku 2 and the RX-78-2. If you only traced the outlines of their silhouettes, you could still identify the MS immediately even with the complete absence of other details.

I'm reminded of a kit I saw in a hobby mag that just threw so many panel lines/decals/greeblies onto the kit that you really couldn't tell what it was a "custom" of to begin with.

I'm not knocking the skills involved or the builder, but I think Bandai has a fairly good understanding of the concepts behind the basic design aesthetics that they put into their kits.

^I'm gonna agree with that. Besides, ugly-ass metal thrusters.

I agree too. The craftsmanship and skill is great, but the taste involved...notsomuch.

metal parts are ugly. Personally I have never liked metal thrusters. I think theyre supposed to be the neutral gray Bandai molds them in and thats it, the insides ought to be red or white. Ignitor pins are a detail i really like and i think they look best as metallic parts.

Another place where i hate metal parts is the barrel tip of the rifle/guns. Iv seen this way too many times that the modeller will do absolutely nothing worth noting to the gun itself, but will always add a hideous golden tip.

I do like the panel lines on this though.

On a general note though, metallic/gloss colours do not look good on mobile suits. At. All.

Unlike Armored Cores, however...

THAT looks very nice in metallics

I didnt want to do too much to the original scheme and design. I painted in jet black as opposed to the dark gray of the original, and added some dark red. I also added some metallic beads in a few places (shoulders and gun) and made sure to add silver details here and there.

I had a set of decals from the Feb 2008 DHM but decided not to use any of them since they really would take away from the model itself...that and they didnt look any good.

Only massive flaw is that i accidentally glued the head together without finishing up painting the visor so all the detail of the visor (sensor) is gone/blank. Oh well, ill be sure not to forget it on the next one.

wow, one of my favorite MS in AD universe. i see a seam line (underside of right arm) but overall i like the color combination - the red gives the suit a more kickass look. :D and somehow your Custom Flag's faceplate seem a little more reflective... or maybe it's just the shot  by the way, i can't see well from the shots, but did you paint the white ribbed details on top of the rifle?

hmm... ok so far i only have one kit i painted recently, i'm still even thinking twice about posting it here 'coz i made a lot of mistakes building and painting it, but what da heck, here it is:

FREEDOM STRIKER

this was my entry for BAKUC 2007 here in the Philippines. MS is a NG 1/100 Strike Gundam, then i slapped on a MG Freedom's wing unit (modified the backpack a bit) and MG Strike Freedom's rail guns. the rifle is NG Strike's while the shield and feet are MG Strike's. EDIT: no, it didn't win any place :?

and yes i photographed it on top of the oven :P

EDIT: and some pics of Graham Flag Custom vs Dynames, just having some fun taking action shots :P

Very cool! I like the black and dark red with white accents a lot. You made it look very clean but sporty. It looks like the paintjob really does make it faster.

I'd share some links if I were more into gunpla. I want to get back into the hobby so badly but right now is not a good time for me to be spending money. Also, I want to learn to do panel lines and to paint my kits. I had a few MS 08th HGUC kits that I built many years ago and when I found them again I was seriously disappointed by how bland they looked as is.

I enjoy taking a peek at Gamera's site but I'm sure you've all seen it before.

Also, I think the dioramas on the FichtenFoo site are simply amazing.

Meanwhile, Astraea conversion + HG Exia on Ebay:

Wow @bid, WTF

tbh, I never seen such an active contest since a 1/48 Hi-Nu G-Sys popped out with a starting bid of $0.01.

Thats not just the DHM Astraea...It also has custom resin parts to make the finished product of the HG Exia+Astrea parts way more flexible, not to mention resin parts for weapons and a shield that dont come included with the DHM set.

I still have one more Astraea set left over so hmmmmmm.

I saw the resin parts, forgot to post it in, but at this rate it will be more expensive than most other 1/144 conversions by a large margin. Still has just less than a day to go

Other than that its a good piece of the MG Hi-Nu. He didnt stray from the design and made some neat minor edits to the proportions. Overall good. Just not as OMGWTFAWESOME as his previous work like the MG version of Infinite Justice or his MG Strike Freedoms

I find it weird why Bandai decided to mold Virtue's faceplate in one color. I preordered the damned thing though, my first 00 kit. Looks like a fun build.
