Poor video quality aside, this looks promising. It looks like the mobile suits will be (mostly) hand drawn so that's a big plus. Still a bit disappointed there will only be four 20 minute episodes as I was hoping for at least six. Still if nothing else at least we'll get some good mobile suit action.

Ep 1 goes up to chapter 4

They will have to cut lots of stuff to reach vol 3 end...

Better quality PVs. The long version and the short version

I too am disappointed that this is only going to be four 20-minute episodes. There's no way they can get 6+ volumes worth of content in there. Based on the trailers this really should be the next OVA after The Origin. It looks that good.

I think what people are missing is that this won't be an adaptation of all six volumes currently out. Thunderbolt is currently divided into two arcs: the space arc (thunderbolt sector u.c. 0079) and The Earth arc (Operation Thunderbolt u.c. 0080). Chances are, the first four episodes of this net adventure are a test and will only cover up to the first part of volume 4 in the manga.

It will either go until vol.02's end with the Psycho Zaku attack on the EF fleet or they will cut lots of stuff to reach the FA Gundam VS Psycho Zaku showdown at the end of vol.03

Ah, I see. Well hopefully this is the case.

Re: The Official Gundam Thunderbolt Anime Thread Mk I

It's definitely heavy-handed, but in my mind the point the author is making is to condemn both sides equally - there's really not much hoo-rah here for the fanboys at all. The individuals on both sides actually seem like normal people in my opinion (with their respective war-time loyalties and biases,) almost all of the mustache-twirling is reserved for the brass and the politicians. Time honored Gundam tradition?
That is a good short take on the story. From an objective perspective, the One Year War didn't have an ending, it just stopped, with no real winners but Zeon losing more since it no longer had leadership or a unified military force. The gutted, fought-out Federation could claim a "victory" mitigated only by the fact they didn't throw in the towel after Loum. Gundam Thunderbolt is going to dive into that meat-grinder aspect of it and go to the "no winners, only victims" aspect that was front and center in War in the Pocket and 008th Platoon. I can deal with that aspect of UC Gundam, and I am somewhat looking forward to it.

The mecha designs really sell the show, lots of detail and cool utility involved. Having Katoki smooth them over for the anime promises a lot of MS eye candy. The characters are adapted from what little I have seen of the manga, but they look about right. They are among the most true to life of UC characters in terms of appearance I have seen and can relate to, which is saying something! I've met real-life analogues of Io & Darryl who came back from the Big Sandbox, and although they did not want sympathy, they did want understanding.

The first 3 minutes' teaser is also being shown on Haruhi-chan Network.

Yeah, this looks and feels like the real gritty goodness of classic UC. From what I have seen of the manga it is an excellent adaptation. This OAV series will not be overshadowed by IBO, but will not overshadow the adventures of Tekkadan either. (They are sort of running in a parallel track, so there shouldn't be fratricidal competition.) Io's jazz soundtrack is the sort of BGM I had always head-canon associated with UC Gundam, not guitar-blaring rock & roll of any kind. All the sexy CG production design is minimized (animation is still used ;)), which admirably sets the tone and stays faithful to the manga.

Watched the 1st ep, GREAT animation. Ep 2 in February, PV shows the FA Gundam attacking the Zeon fleet and the Psycho Zaku launching.

They made some manga events happen faster though(Io's infiltration and the Rick Dom arriving at the EF Fleet)

Interesting to note the changes from the manga. Dialogue too.

And I see that Sunrise is sticking with their term of "Banchi" now... as the colony in question they're fighting at is "34 Banchi".

Just watched ep1 of Thunderbolt. It was pretty great. i wonder if Chris and the gang will mention how all of the people wanting a "dark and gritty" gundam are probably jizzing over it lmao. But still pretty darn cool.

Re: The Official Gundam Thunderbolt Anime Thread Mk I

Yes we definitely are jizzing

I'm actually looking forward to the even grittier parts but that'll probably be in eps 3 or 4.

Daryll seems a lot quieter and maybe even less friendlier in this version which is not quite the same as in the manga. He becomes darker later - for good reason in my opinion.

This is a very faithful adaptation of the manga to the screen. They're skipping a few details though and will be fun to see if they expand on any aspects of it.

Re: The Official Gundam Thunderbolt Anime Thread Mk I

Episode one is up on GundamInfo for US youtube viewers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVAlkOHdNME

I think I may have over-typed my thoughts previously in this thread, so I'm a little hesitant to start discussing this all over again. In brief: it's good, watch it. ^_^ It feels a bit compressed, and I have a feeling the fast pace might be robbing it of its dolorousness and melancholy a bit... which could still be a fair trade (apparently, not everyone shares my grimdark proclivities.)

Can't wait to hear what everyone else thinks. Also, does anyone know the release schedule for the remaining episodes?

Well, if you want to know what I think overall, check my new avatar pic.
I agree it does feel a bit compressed, yet at the same time I am just glad to see this animated, and the soundtrack is on point.

Re: The Official Gundam Thunderbolt Anime Thread Mk I

Loved the first episode.

Surprised that Episode 2 comes out in February, seems weird. Maybe by comparison to Unicorn, it's shorter, but feels like maybe the episode(s) could've been longer because of the wait.
