Re: Ep. 102: Shmups

Before Daigo and Street Fighter, it seems like Star Soldier was THE SHMUP to play at one time in Japan roughly during the mid to late 1980s.
Hudson apparently even had touring events where they made people compete with each other.
And it was also the game that gave Proto Daigo, the man who could tap a button 16 times per sec, Hudson's Prototype version of Kevin Butler Takahashi Meijin a sweet gig giving pro tips about the game.
He even had a Justin VS Daigo moment where they filmed him competing against another formidable gamer named Mori.
Either way great episode and looking forward to a smiling go... erm, that radio show with the funky weather forecast.

I'll also give a minor shout out to Solar Striker, a pretty obscure vertical shooter released by Nintendo early in the Game Boy's life. It's not a genre they've really explored much before or since, and simplistic as it was, it was fun.

Re: Ep. 102: Shmups

Since you guys never mentioned a single PC game of the genre, here are my picks.
Astebreed http://store.steampowered.com/app/283680/
Danmaku Unlimited 2 <<< This has a killer metal soundtrack. http://store.steampowered.com/app/280560/
Crimzon Clover WORLD IGNITION http://store.steampowered.com/app/285440/

An old favorite of mine was Raptor: Call of The Shadows which was a PC exclusive back in the 90s. The cool thing about this game is you can buy the weapons and upgrades after earning the money from killing all the enemies. http://store.steampowered.com/app/336060

Ikaruga is also available for the PC. http://store.steampowered.com/app/253750

For mobile, my favorite one is DoDonPachi Resurrection. It's only available for the iOS. The bullet hell difficulty is fair enough and the soundtrack is fantastic! https://itunes.apple.com/app/id387176580?mt=88

Re: Ep. 102: Shmups

FYI, not talking about PC was circumstantial, not a deliberate snub or oversight. Pedro is a Mac guy, and I have never played any shmups on a PC ever. For whatever reason, it's not a platform I've ever thought of playing a shmup on and have relegated entirely to consoles.
