Robot Apocalypse

A leaked copy of the Pentagon's Nuclear Posture Review states that Russia is developing a new intercontinental, nuclear armed undersea autonomous torpedo. The 79 foot long Kanyon torpedo is capable of delivering a 100 megaton thermonuclear weapon and has a range of 6,200 miles. The warhead is salted with isotope Cobalt-60 which would render the attacked area off limits to humans for 100 years.

Robot Apocalypse News

Korea To Develop AI weapons which would search for and eliminate targets without human control.
Twenty-five researchers from KAIST will participate in the center, while the defense arm of Hanwha Group will dispatch its researchers in accordance with subjects of research, according to a PR official from the firm.

AI arms, which would search for and eliminate targets without human control, are called the third revolution in the battleground after gunpowder and nuclear weapons.

Such weapons would include an AI-based missile that can control its speed and altitude on its own and detect an enemy radar fence in real time while in flight. AI-equipped unmanned submarines and armed quadcopters would also be among autonomous arms.

The Hanwha official said the joint research center will focus on four tasks by priority _ developing an AI-based command system, an AI algorithm for an unmanned sub's navigation, an AI-based aviation training system and an AI-based object-tracking technique.

"Our goal is to complete such developments by the end of the year," the official said.

Boston Dynamics teaching robots to fight against humans:
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style ... 21891.html
The company has published a new video that shows SpotMini, a small, four-legged robot, successfully open a door and walk through it, despite the efforts of a person armed with a hockey stick, who repeatedly tries to impede the robot.
Not shown in this video is an earlier less successful test of Spot, yes it can load a dish washer, climb stairs, but when ordered to get someone a drink...I will let you see the results for yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf7IEVTDjng

 Human Resistance News

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... s-attacked

Admiral Adama would be proud, Californians are rising up against autonomous vehicles. This is not the first time San Fransicans have fought "the machines" In December the SPCA removed its Knight scope Security Robot from patrolling after backlash. Most resident merely complained, but one brave resistance fighter "put a tarp over it, knocked it over and put barbecue sauce on all the sensors".

In April a drunk man was arrested after he "allegedly" attacked and knocked over a Knightscope robot in silicon Valley. This man will have made old Col Tigh proud, taking the fight to fracking toasters.

Two of the six collisions involving autonomous vehicles in California so far this year involved humans colliding with self-driving cars, apparently on purpose, according to incident reports collected by the California department of motor vehicles. On 10 January, a pedestrian in San Francisco’s Mission District ran across the street to confront a GM Cruise autonomous vehicle that was waiting for people to cross the road, according to an incident report filed by the car company. The pedestrian was “shouting”, the report states, and “struck the left side of the Cruise AV’s rear bumper and hatch with his entire body”.No injuries occurred, but the car’s left tail light was damaged.

In a separate incident just a few blocks away on 28 January, a taxi driver in San Francisco got out of his car, approached a GM Cruise autonomous vehicle and “slapped the front passenger window, causing a scratch”.The police were not called in either case.

Self-Driving Uber Car Kills Pedestrian in Arizona, Where Robots Roam Free
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/19/tech ... ality.html

Robot Apocalypse News is usually a tongue and cheek segment, but sadly I have to report the first human death caused by autonomous vehicle. I respect Neo's full discretion on whether he wishes to include this in the segment. Initially I neglected to share this out of respect, for loss of life. However this is a historic event, and it should be noted.
Arizona officials saw opportunity when Uber and other companies began testing driverless cars a few years ago. Promising to keep oversight light, they invited the companies to test their robotic vehicles on the state’s roads.

Then on Sunday night, an autonomous car operated by Uber — and with an emergency backup driver behind the wheel — struck and killed a woman on a street in Tempe, Ariz. It was believed to be the first pedestrian death associated with self-driving technology. The company quickly suspended testing in Tempe as well as in Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.
