It all seemed to happen so fast... Everything broke down as it became apparent this guy was about to consider the girl an enemy when she wasn't and it was going to be his fault. By trying to protect her he had ultimately put her at risk...

"Mame be careful! The Fandom are going to consider you an enemy combatant and part of the Federation..." Then his message staticed out as his sensors went haywire. Kyle was caught off guard by the enemy unit because he had been so preoccupied with the ship. The only thing that saved him was the shared flash that allowed the Messiah to escape. This was accomplished by a backflip over the debries he had been behind and then transforming into fighter mode to escape the burst of heavy machine-gun fire that tore the junked metal and rock apart.

Out of the field came the black and gold valk with a distinctive emblem on the side of the cockpit of a wolf's head with a sword in its mouth. On its forehead was the number 1. Immediately after getting into a line of fire he transformed into battleroid mode and fired a burst of his Quantum beam gunpod at the enemy unit he had now identified as well as two blasts from the large beam cannon turrets. Kyle hoped to keep the fighting away from the civilian ship and Fandom shuttle to prevent any stray fire from hurting them.

~You sneaky bastard... But that piece of junk machine will never catch me.~ The VF-25S was one of the fastest fighters in the Earth Sphere and he hoped it was enough to save him from yet another DSK. He had already dealt with Wraith a few times and now it was this guy.

(Beam gunpod burst and four beam cannon shots at you)

Ryder’s warning came through on Mai’s headset just as she crossed through the airlock between the Hold and the rest of Cicada. Being already afraid of the Fandom Corporal behind her, the warning set that fear off.

Mai panicked.

She swung her arm out at the door controls, finding the emergency leaver. Tugging it down caused the door to slam shut behind her. The Cicada, being a civilian ship, didn’t have airlocks with sophisticated locks or complicated override systems. It wouldn’t take the Fandom Corporal long to get it open. Mai hadn’t bought herself much time. Still panicked, she kicked away from the airlock and made her way to the opposite (aft) side of the Hold. Here, there was a control panel that she could use to access both the Cicada’s navigation and engines, as well as the Hold door controls and the locks that secured the Jegan.

A second before Mai had closed the airlock door, the corporal had managed to get a glimpse of the Federation Jegan stowed at the back of the ship. As the door slammed down in front of him, his eyes widened as he quickly came to several realizations. Drawing his pistol, he began fiddling with the controls on his own side of the door. A few seconds later, the partition slid open and the corporal pushed his way inside. He caught a glimpse of the young woman on the opposite side of the hanger past the Federation mobile suit.

"You! Freeze!" he shouted. He didn't have a clear line of sight, but he took aim with his pistol and fired a pair of shots in her direction anyway.

-----------------

- Zephyr -

"You underestimate the Mironga," Zephyr replied coolly. The dark machine, a unit with agility that surpassed even that of the Fairlion's, easily dodged around the energy fire with several quick bursts from its powerful thrusters. As Zephyr then rapidly closed the distance between it and the Messiah, he fired several of the Mironga's micro missiles, and a dozen of the red hot projectiles tracked the Variable fighter.

Zephyr keyed the COM. "Andromeda. Close in on the salvage transport. That woman will likely attempt to make her escape. I have some questions to ask her before she does so."

"Acknowledged," came a reply. "Engines charging to maximum power."

"And you underestimate me." Micromissiles were his weapon anyways and the AHMMM used standard in his own units were probably a bit more advanced then the ones loaded onto the Fandom units. But instead of firing off his own he had to take down the ones being fired at him first. So his eyes traced over the warheads as he locked onto them all and with a combination of the four 12.7mm head pulse guns, two 25mm beam machine-guns, and his beam gunpod he swept them all aside using the VF-25Ss powerful targeting system. Explosions tore through the battlefield drawing a line between the two as the VF drew back quickly to prevent a close quarter fight.

Finally Kyle caught the enemies vessel on his sensors as it started to move. It wasn't visual sight but it was an thermal signature which was trackable. "If your going to escape girl you better do it now. The Fandom warship is coming for you. I'm currently fighting the enemy commander and I can't lend you much of a hand but I will try to pull him away from your position." The VF transformed and took off along the debris field to try and lure the enemy unit away. He thought about calling the Salvation for help but he didn't want to drag them into this battle. He needed to find another way to get out of this situation.

"I'm always up for a game of cat and mouse," Zephyr said. He was confident in the Andromeda's ability to handle the situation. It would allow him to indulge himself completely in this confrontation.

The Variable Fighter was fast indeed, but his Mironga would keep up with it easily. The only thing he would have to worry about was that powerful arsenal the Messiah boasted, which would tear apart his lightly-armored machine in an instant.

Not that he was planning on allowing the enemy to land a single shot, anyway.

The wings on the back of the Mironga roared, and Zephyr took off after the enemy fighter. The two of them painted long streaks of engine flare as they danced around the debris. Catching the enemy in his sights, Zephyr locked on and fired the Straight Machine gun at his opponent's rear.

"This guy ain't too bad. Too bad for him..." The machine-gun hit a piece of debris as Kyle transformed the valk into battleroid mode and hit the brakes to let the enemy overshoot him before blazing the position with his own counterattack. This came in the form of a full broadside from the beam gunpod, two large beam cannons, and two beam machine-guns. The spray of fire was then sweeped over the enemies projected path in order to increase the chance of hitting something.

He was saving his final attack for the moment before he retreated. And as Wraith had found out it was an assault unlike any other. 214 advance high-maneuverability micro-missiles armed with anti-armor warheads littered the FA equipment and at a moments notice he could release them all making even the most powerful Newtype's day go bad.

-Salvation-

The bridge was in the dark about what was happening due to the distance between them. Only long range communications could project the battle to them via the VF-25S's camera. They also couldn't launch GHOST fighter support to Kyle either due to the distance. They could only wait and pray for his safe return.

As the enemy unleashed a hail of gunfire, Zephyr dived straight into a large cluster of ship and mobile suit wreckages. All around him, pieces of metal exploded and shattered at the ferociousness of the enemy's weapons. Even so, not one bullet nor a single piece of debris even managed to scratch the Mironga as he put the GESTALT through a series of dizzying spins and maneuvers. All the while, he never panicked, never even changed his facial expression, resulting in the entire display coming off as completely effortless.

And, with him putting to good uses his artificially enhanced Newtype senses and awareness, it very nearly was.

"That machine of yours is impressive," Zephyr complemented as he darted out of the cluster. "But your abilities are even more so."

It was time to bring this to close combat where the enemy did not have the advantage. Zephyr loosed a swarm of missiles then, drawing the Mironga's beam saber with its left hand, charged at the enemy Variable Fighter. At the same time, he leveled the Straight Machine gun and fired a continued burst aimed dead center at the Messaiah's torso.

"I'll ask you again. Who are you?"

Nope the moves performed didn't phase Kyle because it became apparent the enemy unit had a weak structure and he could break it even with the smaller Full Armored Messiah with enough force. So he decided to test this theory and reversed as the enemy fired its missiles again. This time instead of focusing all his firepower on the missiles he retreated enough to funnel the missiles enough for him to aim his beam gunpod. The barrel opened and energy built with it until it was fired almost point blank at the missiles. The beam grenade exploded and instead of destroying them all he used the smokescreen to cause the missiles to untrack him and take out the remaining debris around him.

This wouldn't be a problem because Kyle rechanneled the power into energy conversion armor allowing him to survive the near-by explosions. The gunpod hidden away and the Messiah drew its combat knife as the enemy continued to charge. Too bad it ran straight into the blinding smoke where Kyle had already switched over visuals to inferred. The machine-gun rounds no longer were aimed so well and it was effortless on his part to sidestep them and plow straight into the enemy unit using the Messiah's PPB to concentrate into the arm shield. He forcefully went to deflect the beam saber as he swung the combat knife towards the machine-gun in order to try and disable it.

"I have no intention of telling you anything as long as the girl is in danger. Her safety is the only reason I even remain to fight with you." He refused to show his hand to this man until he got what he wanted.

-Cicada-

Mai had her Helmet on and latched by the time the door opened. She ducked her head down and screamed as the shots ricocheted off the bulkheads. She looked up at the Corporal, her eyes streaming tears, to see the Corporal approaching her, weapon drawn and behind him, the Federation pilot Henry Goffreed.

The two collided in a mass of flailing and grappling limbs in Zero-G. Then a shot. Blood blossomed out into the Hold. The Corporal pushed himself away from Henry’s limp form as Mai watched in horror. The Corporal pointed his sidearm at Henry’s head, and pulled the trigger.

Mai felt herself pull away, like her heart and soul had been pulled under water, leaving only her body behind. She felt her arm reach numbly for the Hold’s door controls, felt the lever slide smoothly to the open position. It was like an explosion, everything that was loose in the Hold flew towards the fast opening doors. Tools, scraps of metal, blood, Henry’s body and the Corporal, all violently collided with the Jegan before flying into the void.

The rush of air was enough to start slowly propelling the Jegan out the now open Hold doors, where momentum continued to carry it. The part of Mai’s mind that wasn’t dulled by shock noticed the console beside her displaying a proximity warning, something was coming. The warship

Her mind decided on a plan of action and started putting into play. Working quickly she accessed both the navigation and reactor controls. With that done, Mai kicked off and sent herself drifting towards the open cockpit of the drifting Jegan. Before climbing in, the Cicada’s engines flared. Mai watched it rocket away from her, just before it reached the safe distance, she turned away and heard herself say, “Goodbye,” in a hushed voice. She was inside the cockpit, the damaged hatch as closed as it could be. Light gleamed through the gaps in the opening as the Cicada’s reactor reached overload and exploded.

Darkness followed, darkness and a silence broken only by Mai’s quiet sobbing.

The Mironga whirled around once as Kyle deflected its beam saber with its pinpoint barrier and brought the glowing sword about in time to catch the Messiah's glowing knife as Kyle brought it down hard. The two machines locked weapons and sparks darted back and forth between them.

"I have no intention of telling you anything as long as the girl is in danger," Zephyr's opponent said. "Her safety is the only reason I even remain to fight with you."

Just as the Federation pilot had finished his sentance, Zephyr caught the flash of a large explosion out of the corner of his eye. He was just able to witness the salvage ship dart forward and then burst into a large, glowing fireball, taking the Andromeda's shuttle and his men along with it.

"Well. Looks like you don't have any reason to fight anymore," he stated matter-of-factly.

With a great burst of strength, Zephyr used his saber to wrench the knife out from the Messiah's grip. Holstering the straight machine gun, he lashed out with Mironga's now-free hand, grabbed the Messiah by its head and brought down his beam saber once more for a battle-ending blow. He had forgotten, however, that the Variable Fighter was protected by its pin-point barrier, and the saber was stopped just short of its mark, caught by the pulsating field of energy. Zephyr pressed forward, hoping to overload the barrier and break through to the very vulnerable metal body below.

"You will tell me who you are. I want to know why your presence is almost exactly identical to her's. So similar are you... I'd even go so far as to say that you were twins if I didn't know any better."

(Here comes help for Mai.)

They were far too late. The Fandom had routed their forces and destroyed the ships of the 4th orbital patrol fleet. The best that the late Federation reinforcements could do was search for survivors.

Or at least that was what they thought until they detected weapons fire in the debris field.

It wasn't long before there was a larger explosion that illuminated the Andromeda on the scanners of the Federation warships.

"Unknown vessel detected. Type does not match any Federation or known Fandom design, however we are picking up a confirmed Fandom mobile weapon fighting what looks to be a variable fighter." said the sensor of the Clop that was leading the response.

Her captain wasn't inclined to let anyone else get to what may be Federation survivors.
"Target that unknown ship and open fire with the main guns. Then launch mobile suits to intercept and drive off both of those other machines. Secure this space as quickly as possible!"

"Who the hell is this 'she' you keep talking about!" He was fed up with dealing with this guy as he continued to use his shield arm to hold off the beam saber. This guy might have taken his knife but the free hand was still useable.

Quickly he used the free hand to grab the arm used to grab the Messiah's head and clenched down. Then with a lightning fast action the knee of the VF fighter came up into the gut of the enemy unit using full barrier the VF-25S was capable of to increase the thrust's power. "Driver Knee Thrust!" It wasn't a booster kick of course or a macross punch like he normal used but it would do its job. The four 17.4mm pulse guns then came around and fired not a spray but a focused cutting laser to disconnect the beam saber arm that was still trying to take the head off.

Power continued to flow to the unit from the twin thermal nuclear engines but the cockpit was blaring red with warnings. His systems could crash if he didn't finish this quickly... And the last thing he needed was his barrier system to fail on him at this point. Not when he still needed to know how this girl was this guy kept comparing him too. Of course Ryder didn't know Kayla was still alive so that thought didn't cross his mind yet.

As the Messiah struck the Mironga with its knee, Zephyr lost the grip he had on his head. In response, he reversed his thrusters and flipped backward, narrowly avoiding the tight-beam pulse gun. He regained himself and prepared to strike again.

"Attacks like that won't--"

An alarm suddenly blared on his target tracker, indicating the arrival of a new enemy. Much to Zephyr's dismay and frustration, the Mironga's sensors indicated a Federation battlegroup consisting of several warships.

Against either opponent alone--this Variable fighter or the Federation fleet--he may have been able to emerge victorious. With the presence of both, however...

"Andromeda, we're pulling out," he signaled. Spinning on his heels, he guided the Mironga back towards the invisible ship. As he did, he cast one final glance backwards at the Messiah.

~See you again, my friend.~

As the Andromeda came about, Zephyr relied on the computer to guide him into the cloaked ship's hanger. Once the Mironga was nestled safely inside, he opened a line to the bridge. "Exit the combat area at maximum thrust. We've done all we can here for now."

----------
- Bridge -

"You heard him!" the communications officer shouted. "Full power to engines! Get us out of here!"

The Andromeda's engines flared to life, pulling it away from the debris field. The navigation officer observed his sensors with rapt attention as he monitored the distance between them and the Federation ships. Eventually, as the distance began to widen some, he allowed himself to relax. Even if they were to give chase, there was no way the Federation ships could possibly keep up with them.

"Stealth systems?" he inquired.

"Running at full capacity," The system's officer replied. She used her sleeve to wipe several beads of sweat away from her brow. "They should no longer be able to detect us. We're clear."

"Good... very good..."

"WAIT! Who's this girl you keep talking about?" This wasn't ending and the presence of the Federation army didn't unnerve him. Instead he transformed into fighter mode and took off after the unit he had been fighting this entire time. Kyle wasn't letting him escape even if he had to bust into that vessel and find out the answer himself. Something about this situation was driving him because part of him knew this guy meant his sister.

As he caught up with the enemy it disappeared inside the hanger of the invisible ship but that didn't deter someone as drive as him. The Messiah grabbed onto the hull and latched to it in battleroid mode. The head guns focused as he tried to cut his way into the ship in order to get his answers.

"You bastard! Answer me!" He ordered as he piggybacked the enemy vessel as it tried to escape the Federation fleet.

- Zephyr -

"Ah... now whom is demanding answers from whom?" Zephyr chided. The slight jolt he felt through the ship's hull indicated that the Federation pilot wasn't going to let them go easy. Though, his attitude was different than it had been before. Earlier he had stressed he was only fighting out of necessity, now he didn't want to let him go? It would seem that he'd had a reaction to Zephyr's last comment.

Now that he thought about it, the dossier on Kayla Ryder had indeed mentioned a brother by the name of Kyle Ryder. This common feeling... could it be that this man was....?

Zephyr let out a slow chuckle. "So very interesting..." he mused to himself.

"While you would make an interesting subject of study... I'm afraid that I'm not inclined to allow you to break into my ship at this point in time," Zephyr said. "But, do not worry. I shall give regards to your sister for you in your absence."

"Now... farewell."

- Bridge -

The pilot tensed as the Messiah planted itself atop the ship and began using its lasers to cut a hole through the hull. The Federation pilot had unwittingly, however, landed himself in a rather precarious position: directly in front the Andromeda's primary weapon, a large Mega Particle Cannon mounted just below the ship's bridge.

"Get a lock and take him out!" he bellowed.

"Roger that!" came the gunner's reply. He pulled the trigger and the ship's main gun glowed with a bright golden light before discharging a pair of powerful beams at the enemy's back point-blank.

Something snapped... "My sister..." Kyle muttered as his alarms blared around him. There was a high energy source behind him but he didn't care. All he cared about was that this man knew about his sister and the anger inside of him rose to the surface like a volcano.

"Its you! Your the one that took my sister! I'll KILL you!" The beam cannon then fired at him while he was still latched to the vessel using his FA pack. He disengaged the pack and armed all the warheads on it before trying to dodge the blast. The pack took the blunt of the damage but its explosion set off a nasty chain of missiles... Ryder was trying to tear this ship apart anyway he could but the explosion sent his machine tumbling into space from the force.

"KAYLA! Come back to me!" He screamed into space as he spun out of control. When he was finally able to regain himself the ship had slipped away but hopefully with enough damage to remind that man of who he was dealing with. The Messiah hung in space, still in battleroid mode with Kyle crying. The machine fold drive had been rattled but odds are it would get him home... But Kyle just couldn't bring himself to leave this position for now. Grief was too much and his pain eat at him now that he realized where she was but couldn't save her.

"Sir, the Fandom ship and the mecha are retreating. The variable fighter seems to be following them." said the radar operator.

"Let them go." replied the captain. "Our job is to search for survivors. Tell the Jegan teams to begin searching for anyone still alive out there."

"Right away sir."

Several cries of terror could be heard throughout the bridge as the Messiah's Armored FAST pack detonated into a huge fireball. The ship's dorsal side was stripped of a good deal of its armor and the ship itself felt like it was going to shake itself apart. Eventually, however, the trembling subsided and the Andromeda emerged damaged, but intact. It then proceeded to speed away from the battle zone, and the enemy fighter, leaving not a trace of itself in its wake.

Zephyr huffed a short breath and used the Mironga's computer to asses the damage to the hull. He will pay for that...

Now that he had the opportunity to reflect upon the battle he'd just completed, Zephyr realized that the entire experience had been ultimately satisfying, despite the fact that he came out of it with little more than the knowledge and identity of yet another Newtype. The drama of his exchange with the Valkyrie pilot was not lost upon him either. The Dark Star Knight was quite certain he would be the focus of the young man's rage from this point on. He would look forward to the next time that they met.

In the mean time, he now had other matters to attend to. The commencement time of Kayla Ryder's first earthbound mission was drawing near...

In the darkened silence of Mai’s salvaged Jegan, she ran the events of the last hour or so through her mind. If she hadn’t lied, hadn’t tried to hid the fact that the man she pulled from the Jegan-- which was now her soul companion in the void-- was in truth a Federation pilot. And yet, her imagination brought visions of what might have happened to the man if she had told the truth, he could have been tortured or killed.

Mai had followed the best intentions, but still ended up adrift. Unbeknownst to her, when she first pried the Jegan’s hatch open, she had inadvertently reactivated the emergency beacon. A bright blue light flashed from the Jegan’s head as well as a pulsing radio signal.

Things in the debris field were a mess. In more ways than one. In addition to the now scrap hulls of ships and mobile suits that would have turned a tidy profit for Mai, there were also vacuum preserved bodies of soldiers who had been sucked into open space without a normal suit.

So far the rescue teams had yet to find any bodies that were still breathing.

Until they came across the Jegan Mai was in. Federal pilots were wary of drifting suits like this as more than once the beacon had been used to lure a rescue team into an explosive demise thanks to a bomb placed in the cockpit.

"It's safe. No explosives." called out one of the pilots.

Two of the Jegans floated up to Mai's unit and one pulled open the cockpit to find her inside.

"What? There's a kid in here." said the first pilot.

"A kid? Where's the pilot?" asked his companion.

"Don't know. Keep looking for others, I'll take this one back to the ship."

The first pilot closed the cockpit back up and began towing both Mai and the Jegan back to his ship. (The Clop class.)
