The YMS-09 and MS-09D Doms and variants

There is an air of mystery surrounding the appearance of the MS-09D, the formally adopted version of the Dom Tropical Type, which is simply called Dom Tropical Type. At this point, we should restrict referencing MS that existed up to circa 1984, so no Dowage and Dom Tropen yet.

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10005631/50/2

The original 1/144 Dom Tropical Test Type manual mentioned that 2 YMS-09 Prototype Doms were shipped from Side 3 to California Base for testing, and after one month of testing, the unit 02 was sent to Africa to be converted into the YMS-09D Dom Tropical Test Type. Due to the positive evaluations of this tropical climate model, it was formally adopted in a limited capacity, with 10 odd units being built in the form of option parts(conversion parts). It mentions that from here after, they are given the model number MS-09D. However, many of the ones converted from MS-09B with the option parts were easily misidentified as the YMS-09D. It is also hard to tell if the MS-09D really look identical to the YMS-09D or not. We do see two Dom Tropical Test Types on the box cover of the 1/100 kit.

Below is an unofficial MS-09D made from parts of the Zeonography toy.

I understand that there is also a theory floating around that the YMS-09 body frame is independent to the regular Dom MS-09B, and therefore the former should might as well be called YMS-09A, with possible production models as MS-09A.

So the mystery is whether there were any newly produced YMS-09D body units made and whether conversion parts were for the MS-09B or possible MS-09A.

The introduction of the Dom Cannon circa 2007, which were described to have only a few units built, shares the same body type as the YMS-09, so we could suspect that more MS-09A's were built.

The bottom right corner of the Gundam Katana scan below mentions that during the testing of the Tropical Test D Type, more units were produced for the YMS-09. This could be added to facilitate for the existence of the Dom Cannon, and perhaps some of the additional units became some of the D type?

In merchandise such as card games etc, we do often see the YMS-09D being named as the "Tropical Test Type". However, there are times where it is just called "Tropical Type" with the same appearance as the YMS-09D.

MSV-R introduced the elusive Cold Climate Dom, which uses a backpack that is similar to that of the YMS-09. Much like the D type, the Cold Climate Dom was an on field conversion and not built from the factory.

Found it!

1982 catalog. Bottom left Desert Dom with YMS-09D backpack.

Though, MSV kits were released in 1983.

Re: The YMS-09 and MS-09D Doms and variants

From one of Mark's threads:

According to the MSV series, the second of the original prototypes was eventually converted to the YMS-09D Dom Tropical Test Type, and this machine was then tested by the Caracal Corps. As per the second MSV book, "The Caracal Corps was assigned four D type Doms, including spare parts. Two of these were pre-production type Doms which had been converted to D type specifications. Another 30 pre-production and mass production machines were subsequently chosen to become D types, and were converted for use as research machines for tropical combat mobile suits. However, only 20 units were completed before the surrender of the California Base, and barely ten of these had reached the front lines."

As for the MS-09A and MS-09K:

According to the MSV series, two units of the YMS-09 Prototype Dom were sent to Earth for testing, although a few references to "pre-production types" suggest that additional units may have been produced later on. This may also explain why the MS-09K Dom Cannon featured in recent video games resembles the Prototype Dom.

It's been discussed that California Base seems to have come up with their own versions of some MS, such as the MS-14GD (their version of the MS-14D).

The opposite case would be the MS-07B & MS-07H/MS-07H-4, which were produced at a California Base, and later Granada developed its own versions, the MS-07B-3 and MS-07H8.

Anyway, the YMS-09/MS-09A would be California Base's version of the Dom while the MS-09B (and Rick Dom series) would be Granada's version.

The ballistic cannons of the MS-09K units are meant for use on Earth, which is why it makes sense for them to be developed at California Base. Also, some versions of the MS-06K are actually depicted equipped with the same cannon as the MS-09K-1, namely the 08th MS Team version and the units that appear in the PS3 games Gundam Crossfire and 0081.

And speaking of the MS-06K, if you take a good look at it you will find that it has little in common with other Zaku units. In particular the head resembles that of the MS-14C and the legs have thrusters around them like the YMS-09 and YMS-09D. It's chest cables are said to have inspired the Hizack's and its usual cannon doesn't look like a ballistic weapon, but rather resembles some Zeon beam weapons, something which hints back at some old mentions about the MS-06K having a beam cannon.

As for the Dom Tropen, since the recent YMS-09R-2 hints that the base design for the MS-09F is a space bound model, perhaps we can assume that the MS-09F/trop is simply the Granada version of the YMS-09D.

Re: The YMS-09 and MS-09D Doms and variants

The Zaku Half Cannon was another option set machine with 24 sers made after the Zaku Cannon was evaulated.

It was a surprise that MSV-R did not touch on any MS-09B beung converted into desert type, but did have one for the cold climate type. Therefore, they would have been converted in the same manner.

Of course, it would be safe to assume that there were also additional units of the YMS body frames being converted into the D.

Somehow MSV-R did not elaborate on the Dom Cannon and Zaku I Sniper either. Perhaps they are too Katoki.

At lesst the M MSV Aqua GM got acknowledged in the GM Sloupe and MS-X had the Heavy Gundam unit 2.

Re: The YMS-09 and MS-09D Doms and variants

Personally I would have preferred if the MS-06JK Zaku Half Cannon had been introduced instead as the infamous MS-06J-12, the anti-air MS that served as the base for the MS-06K.

As already pointed out, the MS-06K has traits from other advanced MS models such as the YMS-09 and MS-14C, which make it more advanced than a vanilla MS-06J. As a quick note, the MS-06D also borrowed technology from the MS-07 series, namely the leg side thrusters for performing jet powered jumps. We could have the MS-06JK as the first attempt of a ground artillery support MS, possibly followed by the MS-09K series which would share the large ballistic cannon (which would cause stability problems for the MS-06JK) and finally the MS-06K won hovering capabilities and a shoulder beam cannon for correcting the shortcomings of the MS-06JK.

Back to the Dom series, unlike the YMS-09D the cold climate Dom is based on the MS-09B. In fact Mark translated that they were converted from machines likely prepared for the Black Tri-Stars:

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12127#p279676

Anyway, they were MS-09B units shipped from Europe, which explains why they aren't using the MS-09A frame as a base.

As for the YMS-09/MS-09A, since we know that at least 30 were planned to be converted in the The localized YMS-09D/MS-09D, it makes sense to assume that more general use MS-09A were also produced, including the machines that served as the base for the MS-09K series.

Re: The YMS-09 and MS-09D Doms and variants

If we treat the Izubuchi/Katoki Doms in their own microcosm, I found some interesting parallels.

YMS-09 Proto Dom = Rick Dom II Prototype (space only though)
MS-09B Dom = Rick Dom II (Izubuchi Dom colony colours)
MS-09R Rick Dom = Rick Dom II
YMS-09D Tropical Dom = Dom Tropen

Re: The YMS-09 and MS-09D Doms and variants

Another interesting comparison is regarding generator outputs:

1,269 kW:
YMS-09 ?
YMS-09D ?
MS-09K-1 ?
MS-09K-2
MS-09B

1,199 kW:
MS-09R
MS-09F

1,219 kW:
YMS-09R2
MS-09R2

1,440 kW:
MS-09G
MS-09RS ?

From the MS-09K-2 we can probably assume that the YMS-09, YMS-09D and MS-09K-1 all use the same generator. The MS-09B is still rather heavily based on the YMS-09, which is why it may be using the same generator and have the about the same energy requirements for its hovering system. On the other hand, the space-adapted MS-09R uses a different generator, probably due to its rocket thrusters might having lower energy requirements than its ground version's hover jets.

Meanwhile, the MS-09F also uses a 1,199 kW generator, but it seems to have a more efficient hover system, since it's top speed is higher than the YMS-09 and MS-09B while having a lower output generator. As we know, A Baoa Qu also served as research site for MS, not only for the Zeong but also for the MS-X series that ere later relocated to the Pen asteroid. Anyway, it would seem that the A Baoa Qu researchers used the lessons learned from the development of the MS-09B and MS-09R to produce a more efficient mode that could operate in all environments after some relatively minor reconfiguration. Also, as we know some of the MS-X series, namely the MS-12 Gigan and Gasshia, were developed for sue on Earth, thus it makes sense for the MS-09F to include localized ground variants such as the Dom Tropen. That's probably why it took the F-type designation, which is likely implying that it was meant to be an successor to the MS-06F, a MS that could also operate on both Earth and space.

Moving on, the YMS-09R2 seems to be based on the MS-09F (not the other way around), introducing a slightly more powerful 1,219 kW generator. Since it is better than the stepgap MS-09R, the Zeon command probably ordered to have it mass produced, something which took place at Granada. In other words, the MS-09R2 is basically Granda's version of the YMS-09R2, streamlined for mass production. It seems to have inherited the ease of conversion of the MS-09F, which allows it to be easily reconfigured for colony/ground use.

This leaves the MS-09G and MS-09RS, both of which I suspect could have had 1,440 kW during the OYW. For some context, we know that the Gelgoog series was first ready on October, and that the Act Zaku which also used the same reactor also suffered from a lack of available beam weapons that could make use of its high generator output. therefore I think it's possible that the MS-09RS fell in a similar spot, where there was a lack of E-cap weapons for it, however its higher generator output could be used to increase the firing rate of its beam bazooka.

The case of the MS-09G is more difficult to approach due to a lack of information, but I have long suspected that it was produced and deployed late in the war to support the surviving Zeon forces that fled to Africa as the EF began reclaiming ground on Earth. The MS-14D which has a similar color scheme might have been developed around the same time, which could explain why a Gelgoog generator could have been available for the Dowadges early on.

There's also some concerns about the origins of the MS-06D Desert Zaku from ZZ, whose background says that they were upgraded by different anti-Earth groups over the years, but oddly enough all these machines ended up with the same configuration. Mark once proposed that maybe these machines and perhaps even the Dowadges could have been produced by the EF and were stolen in a similar fashions the RMS-192M Zaku Mariner or the RMS-119 Eye Zack. My own theory is that these could have been provided by Zeon spaces forces to the Earth bound remnants late in the war. In this case, the difference between the Desert Zaku (ZZ) and the California Base Zaku Desert Type (MSV) could once more be a matter of the production site/lines resulting in a different version of the same MS.

Other examples of this, besides the aforementioned Dom types, include the MS-07B3 which was produced at Granada and incorporated components for the Gouf Flight Type project. The Galbaldy Alpha is said to basically be the result of reducing a MS-14A in Gyan production lines. The MS-14D is likely another example, with the California Base version, the MS-14GD, looking more like a MS-14G with the backpack of a Zaku desert Type (leaving aside its legs which were the result of a lack of parts). Even the RGM-79C could be considered the Luna II version of the GM.

In short, I suspect the MS-06D (ZZ ver), MS-09G and MS-14D could all have been produced in space to supplement the forces that escaped to Africa. Given the timing, these could all have had access to higher output generators during the OYW. For what it matters, we do see that the Blue Team's Desert Zaku has no problem operating a standard Gelgoog beam rifle. In the end, such scenario could help justify why all the different groups of anti-EF forces end up with the same models.
