Visually identifying commanders in a combat zone is usually a bad idea -- it basically puts a giant "shoot me first" sign on them. This is why soldiers don't salute officers in combat zones, among other things.

here's something: does the unit have greater range when it has more fins?(or longer)
while were at it, where exactly are the parts that allow communication? the yellow or white parts? or the "gem" where those two protrude from?(anyone else got another term for that?)

Like I said, those fins are for communication(i.e. with your own units in most cases), not sensing enemies.
