Episode 25 - Recall [4th]

((All AEUG players continue posting here.))

~February 2, Universal Century 0088~
~06:44 Coordinated Universal Time~

- Near Gryps 2 -

- The Dervish -
- Bridge -

As Capt. Abbey walked back onto the bridge after his brief (and late) breakfast, he looked up at the operation countdown timer that had replaced the normal sensor display on the starboard edge of the bridge. The numbers now read -05:15:38 and every second seemed to tick away with its own dull thud. The trip from Amman to Gryps had been uneventful aside from the sole hangar accident; the Federation was no longer in the business of fighting the AEUG, and the Titans were all corralled in one place. After commanding an escort unit for so long he still wasn't used to making a trip without being attacked at least once, but he was thankful for it all the same. Waving a salute as he passed Wade on the way to the windows, he patted his stomach and said, "I always eat too much when I'm nervous,". Not passing up the chance, Filmore grinned, "I didn't know you're such a nervous guy, captain! I guess we've been in constant danger since I've been with you,".

Abbey chuckled along with the laughs that got and responded, "Hey, I'm getting older. Hard to stay a perfect physical specimen like yourself,". Jungst gave a friendly elbow to the rail thin Filmore's ribs as the captain's retort got its own chuckles. "Are we still ready for Maelstrom?" the captain asked, quieting the crew down and making sure they got back to work. "Yes, sir. The Argama is making checks every hour and the 4th is ready and waiting," Wade answered for the bridge. "Good," Carl nodded, slowly surveying the other visible AEUG ships through the banks of windows. He turned and walked to his chair, ordering as he climbed into the seat, "I want us at battle stations 15 minutes before the operational time begins. We'll go to full combat alert and have the pilots on launch standby at 10,". A short chorus of affirmatives was the reply.

The Dervish and the other ships in the 4th were still traveling line abreast, but now that their journey from the moon was done the rest of the AEUG fleet was in visual range and traveling as part of the same loose formation. The Argama and Radish were far to their starboard, and the Irish was in charge of the cell to their port side. When the battle at Gryps 2 started, they would have to travel at the edge of the AEUG formation at flank speed to help close the ring around the colony laser. They would be exposed and fighting with little assistance until the swirl tightened, but Bright and Lt. Bajeena had both made it clear they were confident the squadron would perform beyond expectations. Abbey had no doubts that they could and would succeed, but there would be a painful human cost to pay.

- Hangar -

"I can't believe it. It's like nothing happened!" muttered an incredulous mechanic. "Oh, something happened. I happened," Sager grinned as he passed above on a catwalk, "Now get back to work!". The mechanic nodded and then looked back at the machine Rick Archer had accidentally damaged the day before, shaking his head at the feat of field repairs Sager had managed. The suit really did look and perform like nothing at all had happened to it - all the effected electronics and fried equipment was replaced or repaired at a record setting pace. Even the spots where the paint on the outside had been slightly blackened and discolored had been covered up and redone. Coming to a stop where he could see what everyone was doing, Sager rested his hands on his hips and cleared his throat. "ATTENTION!" he bellowed, his voice carrying all the way across the hangar and over the noise of the equipment. "WE NOW HAVE ABOUT..." he said, stopping to check his watch, "FIVE HOURS BEFORE THE OPERATION BEGINS. I WANT YOU ALL TO FINISH WHAT YOU'RE DOING, DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WORK AND THEN GO BACK TO YOUR PRIMARY SUIT TEAMS. WE'RE DOING A FINAL EQUIPMENT CHECK,".

Dr. Merkwürdigliebe popped his head up from behind the missile pack he was working on. "Oh my," he muttered, looking at his own watch, "Nearly, eh, out of time,". The battle at the Gate of Zedan had been somewhat of a disappointment from the standpoint of a test flight for his equipment packs, but Gryps 2 should prove to be much more enlightening now that the kinks were worked out. While he was used to being in and near combat, something about this engagement was making him nervous and forgetful, and that was slowing down his work. He ignored it, partially by assuming having Rem unable to assist him made him notice his own absentmindedness more acutely. Whatever the case was, he still had to finish what he was doing and then do final checks on the Kanone models he had brought aboard. They were the newest version of the Rick Dias modifications, but he was certain his ideas were perfected in their design. He almost considered them superior to his work on the Marasai replacement the Titans had been so wishy-washy about.

- Team 1 Ready Room -

The planning board in Team 1's ready room displayed a loop of Operation Maelstrom's outline left from an early morning briefing as Fritz went through his locker. Michiko sat on one of the couches behind him, her hands folded in her lap. "I'm not sure what I want..." she said, rubbing the back of her gloved hand, "I don't really have a home any more. Not besides the Dervish,". Fritz pushed his extra uniforms aside and grabbed his helmet to check his normal suit. "This ship is no home," he said in a tone that conveyed personal experience, shaking his head, "What about your apartment?". She looked down at her hands and shrugged, "It's nice, I guess. I wouldn't mind living in Amman,". Fritz chuckled, "Really? As soon as I get back I'm moving Liese to Von Braun. Amman is too industrial,". "Oh. Well Von Braun is nice too," she nodded.

"It is. But you know you're allowed go wherever you want instead of following me?" Fritz asked jokingly, locking his gear away and turning to look at her to find her blushing slightly. "We've talked about this twice," he sighed. "I know," she said, her gaze dropping to the floor and her cheeks flushing darker, "But I can't just change... how I feel...". "Michiko, I can't make you change the way you want things to be. I'm just asking you to admit how things are. I--" he said, frustrated. But he stopped and shook his head, "We can't dwell on this right before we have to fly,". Looking pitiful, she crossed her arms under her chest and nodded, "I know. I'm sorry...". "It's just that... I don't know what else to tell you. I thought we understood each other," Fritz said, sitting down opposite her and rubbing his forehead. "I'm sorry..." she said again, sounding like she was ashamed to have brought anything up. "Please stop apologizing," Fritz said, sighing again, "You didn't do anything wrong,".

They sat there for a few silent moments, Michiko still staring at the deck at her feet and Fritz staring at the cushion to his left, both of them avoiding looking at the other or saying anything else.

- Celeste's Quarters -

"That's how we'll do it..." Celeine repeated. She didn't believe the plan she and Celeste had come up with was the best idea, but it was the best they could do. And she thought it had a real chance of working, or else she'd never agree to it. "How will you get into the hangar? And how do you expect to get into my suit once we go on alert?" Celeste asked, shaking her head. She was committed to trying to talk to Nick one last time, but she was worried about the small details they seemed to be glossing over. Celeine crossed her arms and said, "Let me worry about that. I've gotten into some mean places before to get a story - sneaking into this ships' hangar and into your suit before you launch should be child's play,". "I suppose so. I'll take the photos with me so at least I'll have them if you can't make it," Celeste said, patting the pictures they had taken in the hospital of Ed Rigney. "Not a chance I miss this. I have to snap Nick out of it. And besides, I need to be there to get it right for the book," the reporter smiled.

- Sick Bay -

"It's going to be a pain when they turn off the gravity blocks," the doctor explained to Rem. He was leading his small staff in prepping the bay for zero gravity and they were having trouble with Rick's bed. "And believe you me, you don't want to be loose. The first time you try to steady yourself with those hands you'll know why," Lekarz grinned. He took a step back from Archer's bedside for a breather and asked, "By the way, how is the pain medication working? We can always up the dosage if it's not enough,". Rem moved his forearms and winced as his hands brushed against the bed and his body. "It's okay right now, doc. Not good, but okay," he answered. Getting back to work to make sure Rick as being secured safely, Lekarz said, "I bet you'd feel better if Miss Coggs were around. Too bad she'll be busy too pretty soon,".

- The Hamburg -
- Bridge -

One might think that, so close to such a large battle, Capt. Loweno would be veritably bouncing off the walls. But unlike his eagerness at the Gate of Zedan and previous skirmishes this time he was calm and controlled. The gravity of the situation and the precision called for in Operation Maelstrom had his full attention, and his excitable personality and love for combat command was tempered by an understanding of what they were about to undertake. "If the Gate of Zedan was this war's Solomon, you can bet this is its A Baoa Qu," he muttered to his XO as they watched updated precombat data roll in from the Dervish and Argama. "Yes, sir. But A Baoa Qu was over in less than 12 hours," Lt. Stalvern answered dourly. "Not an optimist, eh Johnny?" Loweno asked, smiling a little more broadly. He drummed his fingers on his leg and said, "But you're right. We get our hands on this thing and then we have to hold it. This won't get sorted out for days,". With a chuckle, he shrugged, "But as long as we're alive at the end of it a win's a win,".

- Al's Quarters -

Laying on his back with his arms folded behind his head, Al stared at the Francheska poster on the ceiling of his room. Unlike the way he had been moping and grousing for days and weeks beforehand, the smile put on his face by Paris was still there. He thought about the way she giggled when he introduced himself, and the way she smiled back at him... Then she asked about where he was from.

“Thanks and yes I am one-hundred percent spacenoid. I have lived in space my whole life. My parents flew a transport for a living, so I spent most of my life just floating. Although, the universe cruelly evens out the scales when I am in gravity... I am so clumsy that it goes past funny and enters embarrassing.” Paris cocked her head to the side and looked at Al curiously, “What about you? I assume you’re a spacenoid too. What’s your story?”

Al's smile had just barely faltered at that question, but he managed to stay cheerful by focusing on the girl standing in front of him instead of letting himself fall into the past again. "I'm from Side 6... I guess Side 5 now. A place called Libot. It was pretty boring most of the time, but we, uh... I saw the war, I guess you could say," he said, looking melancholy. Trying to avoid that memory at all costs, he pushed ahead and continued, "I tried to stay out of this as long as I could. But I guess the AEUG let me meet you,".

Like he had back then in the hangar, he winced at his own awful attempt at conversation, but that wasn't enough to get rid of his smile. He looked over at his digital clock and realized how little time he had left before the operation started. Pushing himself away from bed he righted himself and checked his uniform. Now that he was cleaned up and in a fresh set of digs he felt better prepared to talk to her again. "She's probably either in the hangar or the ready room..." he thought aloud as he headed out the door into the corridor.

- The New Yark -
- Ready Room -

"So are you ready for this, Ramon?" Thibaut asked, suddenly sounding nervous as he checked his gear. Lt. Sumitani seemed to think it over for a second or two, silently thrusting across the room as he considered the question. "Hey~. I'm okaaay. Don't worry, Thibaut. We'll all work together!" he answered in an outburst of confidence, flinging the door of his locker open. Thibaut nodded, seemingly accepting the answer as sincere. "The captain seems confident too. I guess I shouldn't worry so much," the young Chareux said with a smile, "If anyone should know what we're up against it's him,".

"The captain seems confident too. I guess I shouldn't worry so much," the young Chareux said with a smile, "If anyone should know what we're up against it's him,".

"I have no doubt in my mind." Ethan said, grinning. "We're going to show them just how much hell we can give them. If Sumitani, crazy guy that he is, thinks we're going to be okay, we'll make it just fine."

He wasn't really sure if he was reassuring himself or the others. He adjusted the neckline on his normal suit, letting in a draft of cool air on his neck. This was his chance, a hero's golden opportunity.

I'm going to prove myself here. I'm not just some kid, I'm the next best thing!

Ruffling his hair back, he turned to Ramon.

"My orders, sir?"

Re: Episode 25 - Recall [4th]

-The Dervish-
-Ready Room 2-

Marvin clicked the remote to advance the display screen again, moving the 4th Advance from one spot around Gryps 2 to another, closing in slightly. The plan still stuck Marvin as odd. They'd be circling the colony laser, the operation status of which was currently unknown, although nobody mentioned that, before finally getting painfully close to it and just blasting whatever was let in the pocket. The timing needed for it would be impressive, and the pilots like himself would be in a running dogfight if they wanted to keep up with their ships, and all of them did.

Marvin took another puff from the cigarette he was smoking, before stabbing it out in an ashtray in the middle of the table. It joined a small collection of them, and the now empty pack, and a lighter that was nearly out of fluid and Cowboy was tired of trying to squeeze the last few drops out of. He wanted another, mainly because it was something for his hands to do while he watched the video for the 5th time in the past few days, after reading a score or so of reports and operation plans that had told him the same things over the same amount of time. Hamilton knew his little roll in all of this, which was to attack and fight like normal, making sure the Dervish and the other ships didn't get knocked out as they executed their more complicated moves, which in turn forced him to keep up with them...

"Damn it..." Marvin mumbled quietly to himself as it happened again. If one thought about any plan for too long, getting too far into the details, it seemed too complex. Marvin had long since passed that point, but half the friggin' crew was talking like this would be the battle, that this single act would somehow end the war, and a number of them were acting differently because of that. To say that Marvin found it annoying would have been something of an overstatement, but in that dark part of his mind that Marvin was now tuning out more often than not, he was glad that the attack would be going off and a few hours and they would finally get around to it all.

He rubbed his eyes and finally noticed the rumbles of his stomach as the door hissed open behind him. Marvin twisted, wincing as stiff muscles in his back popped and ached, to see Eddie with his arm around Jane's waist. "Hey Cowboy, like my new shirt?!" Eddie nearly yelled, prompting a grin and quiet laugh from Jane. The shirt in question red, with the same odd black and white stripes across it like on his helmet and the shoulders of his Rick Dias.

Marvin snorted. "Lovely. Jane, when are you going to stop giving him those?" He asked tiredly.

Her smile took on the usual polite look it had when she relayed orders, as did her voice. "It was the last one."

Eddie pulled her a little closer to him. "Does this mean I have to give you stuff for the week after your birthday?"

"Do you even remember when my birthday is?" She asked sweetly.

"July 3rd." Eddie answered instantly and got a nod. "Crap, it'll take me till then to find good enough stuff to give ya."

She turned to face Eddie and stood slightly on her toes and kissed him on the lips. Eddie mocked suprise as she headed for the door. "That's why I love you-"

"That?!" Eddie nearly yelled in comic shock.

"Sure," She winked, "I need to get up to the bridge. See ya, Cowboy." She waved, getting one in return, before stopping at the door and blowing a kiss back at Eddie.

"Love you!" Eddie mock yelled again, grinning even more so than usual as the door closed.

"God, love is disgusting." Marvin said after a moment. This time, the suprise on Eddie's face wasn't totally faked.

"A joke?! What time is it? History must record this moment!" Eckardy stated, rolling over the back of the couch and then grabbing a book and the stereo remote off the nearby table. "Seriously, it's good. Both love and jokes." Eddie chuckled to himself as he started skipping over songs that barely begun to play as he tried to find one he wanted to hear.

"Yeah, yeah." Marvin waved and stood up as his stomach rumbled again. He hadn't eaten since early the night before, and then hadn't eaten all that much. "I'm going to have breakfast. Wanna come along?"

"Nah, me and Jane were just there." Eddie said, distracted by the stereo. He finally found a song, one that faded in with a loud guitar solo that Marvin recognized because of how many time he'd heard it, as it was one Eddie regularly stated to be one of his favorites.

"Bye Eddie!" He yelled at a brief quiet point after the solo but before the song itself started. Eckardy waved his hand over the couch before getting into his book as Marvin left the room. The hallway was filled with the music for a moment before the door closed and Marvin headed toward the mess hall.

Abbey slumped in his seat and blew out a huge breath. "I can't believe it. It's one thing after another..." he muttered, dumbfounded. "Yes, sir," Torres nodded soberly. Onscreen behind him, Bright handed off to Caesar the clipboard of information he had been reading and said, "Indeed. Our luck during this war has seemed to vacillate wildly. And this time it's not as simple as dealing with a careless and spiteful attempt at a colony drop,". Abbey shook his head, "I wouldn't call thwarting a colony drop simple, sir. Surely there's something we can do, or you wouldn't be passing this message along,". Quattro, who was standing beside Bright's chair, explained matter-of-factly, "We'd tell you about this whether there was a plan in place or not,". As usual his voice and demeanor seemed cool and calm, as hard to read as the eyes hidden behind his sunglasses.

"So there is a plan," Abbey said, reading into Quattro's answer. "Yes, captain," Bright affirmed. He seemed as in control and determined as Lt. Bajeena did. Bright explained confidently, "We'll take Gryps 2 and use the colony laser to prevent Axis from hitting Granada,".

- Team 1 Ready Room -

"She said you talked to her. That you apologized. What was the point of that then?" Fritz asked, holding his hands out with his palms up as if confused. Michiko had risen from her seat and moved closer to the door with her arms still crossed under her chest, and her brow was furrowed as she turned away from him embarrassedly. "I felt like I should talk to her, that's all. I didn't want to hide anything from her," she answered quietly, her cheeks still flushed. Fritz leaned forward and rested his forehead on his hands, his arms propped by the elbow on his knees. "There's nothing to hide, Michiko," he said sounding frustrated without looking up from the floor. She hugged herself tighter and said, "I don't want to talk about this any more,". "What are we supposed to do, go back to ignoring this?" he asked, raising his head, "Pretend there's no tension in the team and just go out there and hope for the best?".

She sniffed back a tear and shook her head, "You can pretend whatever you want," as she headed for the door. "Come on, Michi, don't--" he called out, but the door slid shut and cut him off as she slipped into the hallway. She wiped her eyes and sniffed again as she began to drift down the corridor. She was still fighting the slow flow of tears back when she accidentally bumped into Marvin. "Oh!" she peeped, rubbing her eyes with her gloves in an awful attempt to hide her emotional outburst. Still flushed and red eyed, she apologized quietly, "I'm sorry, Marvin. I didn't see you...".

- The Hamburg -
- Hangar -

Spinning his Cyclops Team patch over his fingers, Al floated happily into the hangar looking for Paris or Irene. "Hey, have you guys seen Ltjg. Kawamura or Ens. Carter?" he asked a group of mechanics who were busy triple-checking one of the team's Nemos. "Uh... No, I don't think so. Been kinda busy though," one of them answered for the group, and the others shook their heads. Al nodded and kept moving past them, "Yeah, okay. Thanks,". He stopped at the catwalk railing and slipped the patch into his vest to keep it safe, then leaned far out over the metal railing to take a look around, keeping his feet hooked so he wouldn't float away. If neither of the young women were there, he'd check the ready room. He was sure he'd be too embarrassed to go directly to Paris' room, so he hoped she'd be around somewhere in plain sight.

- The New Yark -
- Ready Room -

The newest member of the ship's MS team opened up the collar of his normal suit, ruffled his hair back away from his forehead and spoke up, asking Ramon, "My orders, sir?". Hard AE spun his helmet in his hand and answered, "Resting and standing by, heeey~!". Taking another opportunity to translate for his longtime wingman, Thibaut pulled on the arms of his normal suit and explained, "We're not due to go for a few hours at least, so just sit tight here and try to relax until we're put on launch standby,". Ens. Waclaw, who left his suit off at the waist to stay cool, shrugged, "Hurry up and wait, kid,".

-Dorms-

with a snort wales woke up slowly, dimly taking view of his surroundings namely that he was still in his normal suit, though he had picked up on how to pilot the dias, the entire learning experience had been more physically taxing than he had anticipated, doubly so with him craming every waking hour between eating into simulations to learn as much as he could about the dias before the battle took place, speaking of which. he looked at the small clock by the bed

"6:44....5 more hours." he mused to himself, "s'pose i'd better get to the ready room, at least i'm already suited up" groggily he got up, grabbed his helmet and pilot goggles before leaving the dorm room, as he sauntered down the corridors towards ready room 3 he began whistling a tune he once heard being played by a busker somewhere on earth he had no idea why he was remembering it now but didn't particularly care

-Hallway-

Marvin was drifting down the hall, not using a lift grip because one hadn't been near by, head down because that was simply how he usually ways, particularly when he was thinking, not really looking ahead when there was a red colored blur in his vision.

"Awcrapsorry!" Cowboy blurted, setting his feet on the bottom of the hall to see Michiko rubbing her eyes. Even Marvin could tell something wasn't right, which was saying something, but didn't have the slightest clue why.

"I'm sorry, Marvin. I didn't see you..." She apologized quietly.

"Uh, me either," He stammered. "Uh-uh, you alright? I-I didn't hurt you or anything did I?" He mumbled out as quickly as he could, concerned and slightly panicked, worried that their collision was the reason she was tearing up, or had made something worse than it should be...

Re: Episode 25 - Recall [4th]

-The Hamburg-
-Paris' Quarters-

Paris awoke with a groan and a shudder. As she attempted to sleep, her dreams became more and more vivid. The last dream was about flying her Nemo towards Gryps 2, landing on it, and suddenly getting blown apart as the whole colony exploded. Strangely enough, Paris had never even seen Gryps 2 and had a distinct feeling that Colony Laser didn't look a giant white satellite. Sitting up on her bed, Paris glanced over at her alarm clock that she set for the operation start time and felt her heart skip a beat. About five hours until the mission started...Paris swore and unbuckled herself from the bed, floating up to the ceiling and rubbed her eyes. She had gone to bed with twelve hours before the operation in an attempt to get a good night’s rest before she went into her first battle. However, she was beset with nerves and doubts. Would she perform well? Would she get shot down? When it came down to it would she be able to kill someone? Was she going to cause a comrades death? Paris shook herself mentally and pushed off the ceiling and came down to the carpeted ground of her room. So what if she didn't sleep well? She still needed to have her head in the game. If Operation Maelstrom was going to succeed the AEUG was going to need every pilot and besides, this was her chance to get revenge for her parents death by getting back at those damn Zeons.

Paris pulled out one of the three objects that weren’t taken away from her when the Earth Forces and her extended family seized her belongings after Paris’ parents were killed. It was a tea kettle with several bags of tea leaves. It was a morning routine for Paris to make tea and today seemed more like a necessity then a simple pleasure. She needed to relax. Setting water to boil on the small ground level stove she had plugged into the wall of her room (not known for being safe, but Paris was willing to take that risk. A fire was a small price to pay for some Earth Grown Tea.)

While waiting for the tea to boil, Paris took a shower. Sighing in delight as the warm water ran down her body, washing away the sleep...but unfortunately the nerves didn’t just dissapear. In fact, the shower was making things worse, the more aware she became, the more worried Paris got. It finally got to the point where Paris, swearing loudly, turned off the shower, wrapped herself in a white towel, and walked out into her chilled room. What was she thinking accepting this transfer?! She was just going to die! Biting her lip, Paris walked over to the corner of her room where the second object that she had from her parents lay. It was an original record player. Although Paris only had one record to play...it was her parent’s most cherished and favorite music. Classical. Paris had no idea who wrote the pieces or if they were from some famous play, movie, or concert, but when she listened to the music she was beset with memories of her living on the transport Daisy's Voice, of laughing with her parents, of having parties on the ship with other transport crews, her first kiss...

Paris smiled sadly at the record as the music filled the room and she ran her hand gently over the record. As if touching that part of the past would somehow transport her back in time. To a place her she had a family. To a time where she had close friends. The people on the Hamburg and the Balrampur were nice and caring, but they were never close. Even George, disgusting George, was never close to Paris. Although now she was on the Hamburg at least she had options...Paris smiled slyly to herself as she quickly dressed in her red uniform coat, black pants and boots, ran a brush through her long dark hair, and finally Paris slipped the last of the three object that she had from her old life. It was her mothers engagement ring, it was the only thing they could find in terms of remains after the rifle blast hit the bridge and Paris had worn it around her neck on a chain ever since. The ring wasn't anything special, a simple gold band with a small sapphire, but Paris knew it was more than her father could have afforded when he first proposed her his mother and she kept it as a symbol of love.

Pausing to stop the record and pick up her tea, Paris was soon out the door and heading for the Ready Room. Sipping her tea through a straw all the way down the hall. Maybe coming up to date on the ins and outs of the operation would calm her more then the tea, shower, and music had.
For 2000 years I lay dormant, now I have returned to bring good cheer to you all once again!

Re: Episode 25 - Recall [4th]

- The Hamburg -

It was unexpected for Irene to saw that the company learned about her venture in the Karaba. It turned out quite a pleasant surprise. Few of her colleagues even her once superior staff member shown some sympathy for her doing. Thinking about it now, Irene was one of the few elites who were dismissed right after 0083 incident. She had too much direct involvement to the project. When the company washed it hand’s clean and show it to the new regime, Irene was washed away and kept in the dark corner along with many other.

She still hates AE for that. But fate operates like an invisible hand, at one time pushing somebody off the cliff but latter offering a helping hand out of nowhere. Turned out, Irene draw a lucky card today. The very few lot that survived the turmoil turned out to be people who she would call friends, reliable and trustworthy friends.

The AE contact aboard the Hamburg hand over a disk after Irene read the notes he gave earlier. The man, obviously not accustomed to smile gave a faint smile. “Give em, hell missy.” That’s all he said before took the notes and disappearing down the hall.

Irene grinned when she saw the disk. She knew what it was as she strolled down the hallway rather happily.

-The New Yark-
-Mobile Suit Deck-

Ethan sat impatiently in the cockpit of his Nemo, his arms crossed, his eyes closed. He had been there since after the meeting. He had made a mad rush there, even ran into several crew members (He had shouted "Sorry!" everytime), and finally made it to his mobile suit.
He was even sure one of the mechanics had told him he was in the way.

"If you're just going to sit there like an idiot, why don't you help out with the adjustments?" The chief mechanic asked him.

"Huh?...Oh, right. Just tell me what I need to do." Ethan replied lazily.

After all, a hero just can't sit around and wait for things to happen, he thought to himself. One day, I'll pilot a mobile suit, one just like that one on Christmas Day, so long ago.

"Get to it!!" The mechanic yelled angrily, thrusting his arms here and there.

"Relax, pops. Zero-G maneuvers and all." Ethan sarcastically replied.

*thud*"...ow" Wales muttered as his head came into contact with the wall, under the low gravity he floated away on a diagonal, eventually comming into contact with the other side *thud* "i guess i'm more tired then i realise" he said to no one in particular as he slowly continued through the corridor like a human pinball *thud* "maybe i should've stopped by the cafeteria first, gotten some coffee into my system" *thud* he saw a T-junction come up "right, um...i have to take a left here i think...alright legs get to work, now's not the time to be asle-" *thud* "damn..."

the last impact brining him to a complete halt, wales brought he head up to stare at something other than the floor, blearily noticing that Michiko and Marvin were in front of him some disance down the corridor oh dear, ok how am i going to do this...don't want to interrupt what ever it is they're doing he thought, trying to figure out how to get past them and into ready room 3

"Ummm, I don't think that's the best way to get around," Terrace said to Wales Ingleshard, "Are you okay?"

Terrace wasn't sure why the new member of Team 3 was bumping into just about every wall on his way down the hall. He did know though that it didn't look like a pleasant experience.

- Hangar -

Having gone over her check list Sophie floated out of the hangar and headed back to the Team 2 ready room. The whole way back she thought about the time she had been spending with Rem in sick bay. It was only a short amount of time since they had been constantly kept busy with the coming operation, but because of it they seemed to better understand how they felt about each other.

Before she opened the door to the Team 2 ready room she could already hear the din of Eddie's music. Which became louder the moment she opened the door and entered the wall of sound.

"Eddie!" she yelled over the music, "Can we talk for a moment?!"
"Kamille, if it wasn't for you...." Jerid's last words

"Eddie! Can we talk for a moment?!" Sophie's voice barely made it over the music. Eddie popped off the couch, grinning for it was at that moment the song switched to a much quieter, slower section.

"Sure." He replied, not having to yell, as he reached over and grabbed the remote, pausing the song right after the singer said 'Waitaminute!', which struck Eddie as funny. He dropped the remote in his lap and turned his head back toward the door. "What's up, Sophie?"

Since finding out about his transfer to Team 2 Bernard has tried to meet up with his new C.O. but the blaring music drowned out any attempt at the door so instead he would spend his time in the hanger checking on his suit before the upcoming battle. It would be his first sortie in a Dias B-type. Not an ideal time to learn how to handle the quick mobile suit but he did have an advantage by having piloted Dom-type suits during his last stint as a zeon pilot.
Entering the busy hanger he spots an odd figure who seems to be in a world of his own. Approaching Dr. Merkwürdigliebe, whom he assumes is one of the researchers from AE.

"How's the targeting on this thing? If it's anything like a Tropen then I suggest by-passing a few non-essential systems to reduce the reaction time...I mean, it's meant for quick hit and run attacks and the damn comps always tryin' to find the most accurate trajectory when you just wanna pull the trigger and leave. Also, are the missile pods detachable cause they'll just be dead weight if I'm being chased."

"That's the gist of it," Abbey sighed into the handset. He wouldn't have believed the audacity of Axis' latest plot if he hadn't heard about it straight from Bright Noah. Whether the Zeon were trying to buy time or it was an attempt at a massive distraction, or even if it was just a move of barbaric desperation he didn't know. The thing was, their situation wasn't desperate, not like the Titans or the AEUG. Haman Karn could afford to sit back and play it safe. That made him worry that it was for a very specific reason. On the other end of the line Fritz stumbled over his words as he processed what the captain had just told him. "Where is it going to hit?" he finally asked. Abbey, remaining calm, said, "It's not, Fritz. We're going to--". "Where?" Fritz demanded, a scared and angry edge coming out in his voice. The captain took a breath and answered, "They say it'll hit Granada if nothing is done to alter the course. It won't directly effect Amman,".

"Jesus," Fritz breathed a sigh of relief. Abbey could practically feel Ashlyn's tension and worry melt away after he was assured his family wasn't in danger. Carl waited a moment and then continued, "Fritz, they've got a plan. But it hinges on Maelstrom,". In Team 1's ready room, Fritz' brow knitted. "They can't force them to... Wait," he said, working it out on his own, "We're going to use Gryps 2 to protect the moon?". Abbey shifted in his seat and nodded, "Yeah. Fire the colony laser, push Axis into a new course, and show off a little for the Titans,". "God help us if it doesn't work," Fritz said quietly.

- Sick Bay -

Dr. Lekarz approached Sager at Rem's bedside and pleaded with him again, "Please, chief, wash your hands! If you're going to be that close to Mr. Banner and you just came from the hangar you should clean up,". Sager waved off Lekarz and clucked, "Rem ain't that fragile, doctor. Besides, I'll only be here for a minute,". "It's fine, doc," Rem nodded. Lekarz threw his hands up and relented, "Fine, fine. I'm the one that gets to treat you if you get an infection,". Chief Polk turned back to Rem and smiled, "Good to see you're all right. And I heard you've been having some nice chats with Sophie. That's good,". Rem's cheeks reddened a bit and he smiled, "Yeah, it's been kinda nice being cooped up in here actually. No work and I get to talk to her more often,". Polk stuffed his hands in his pockets and nodded, "I just wanted to check up on you. I hate to let somebody get hurt on my watch is all, you know? But Dr. Lekarz is pretty good at what he does,".

- Hallway -

"Awcrapsorry!" Marvin blurted, planting his feet to stop his forward movement. "Uh-uh, you alright? I-I didn't hurt you or anything did I?" he asked, obviously flustered and anxious. She snuffled again as she tried to calm herself down. "No, it's okay. I wasn't paying attention," she apologized back, still sounding distant and crestfallen. The dull thuds of Wales floundering his way towards his team's ready room was a brief distraction, and she looked in his direction as Terrace came to his aid. "Ummm, I don't think that's the best way to get around," Terrace said to Ingleshard, "Are you okay?". Michiko forced a thin smile and said, "I guess we're all having trouble since the gravity was switched off,".

- Hangar -

Dr. M wiped off his hands and backed away from the Kanone he was checking out, convinced it would be a smash hit. If the new models worked half as well as he expected they would be an excellent addition to the AEUG's normal production run (or the Federation's... or Axis', perhaps). He looked up and saw Bernard approaching, and gave him one of this strange smiles. He knew from the data on the 4th's pilots provided to AE that Korbel had been a Zeon pilot, and that put him more at ease speaking to him. "How's the targeting on this thing? If it's anything like a Tropen then I suggest by-passing a few non-essential systems to reduce the reaction time... I mean, it's meant for quick hit and run attacks and the damn comps always tryin' to find the most accurate trajectory when you just wanna pull the trigger and leave. Also, are the missile pods detachable cause they'll just be dead weight if I'm being chased," Bernard asked a barrage of questions.

Merkwürdigliebe nodded and listened, taking in the inquiries as he cleaned his glasses. "Well," he began, slipping them back on, "I actually, eh, did some work on the Rick Dom. And if the Tropen is as I remember the redesign was sloppy,". He smiled and explained, "The experimental units use a newer targeting system that we've been working on since last year, so no worries there. The data gathered with the equipment packs was used to finalize the Kanone Dias' design. I made sure it can fire and change, ah, targets as fast as the pilot,". He chuckled, "Unless of course the pilot is a newtype, I suppose,". Gesturing past Bernard at the B-Type in his rack, he assured him, "The missile pods are indeed, eh, ejectable. It's a true hit-and-run mobile suit,".

Alfred spent a few minutes hanging around looking and waiting for Paris or Irene in the hangar before he decided to move on. Still twirling the Cyclops patch between his fingers, he rounded the corner and found himself practically face-to-face with Paris. He recoiled and put a hand against the wall to make sure he didn't run into her, losing his grip on the patch in the process. It floated lazily away from his hand as he caught his breath and tried to speak. "Oh! Uh, hi," he stumbled, smiling broadly as his face slowly reddened. Not wanting to admit he had been looking for her, he said, "It's great to see you again,". He quickly added, "Not that I wouldn't have anyway. The operation coming up and everything. But I'm still happy. Too see you,". He resisted the urge to smack himself with all his might. Looking over her shoulder, he noticed his precious patch wandering away. "Whoa! Uh, gimme a sec," he asked, gingerly moving past her to chase it down.

"..huh?" Ingleshard replied unintelligently "yeah..sure, just bit tired is all, i'll be right.." almost as soon as he finished his sentence the replacement pilot nodded off for a second, completely missing michiko's comment before snapping awake

"i think i'll head for the cafeteria now..." again he nearly fell asleep before jerking his head up, looking around for a gripper.

The Dervish
-Hallway-

It wasn't long before they would be going into battle again. At least soon enough that Jacob was getting antsy and didn't feel comfortable anywhere on the ship that wasn't involved in combat. He wasn't fit company for the living quarters.

Not long ago, he would have been bouncing off the walls in a very similar way to Wales. A native Earther, he was still getting accustomed to lack of gravity, but he could now at least get around without ending up bruised and battered.

He approached his team's ready room from the opposite direction, however, so the first thing he saw was Michiko and Marvin. He tensed a bit when he saw that Michiko was crying and his eyes narrowed on Marvin.

"What's wrong, Michiko? Are you ok? Did someone hurt you?" he asked, cutting an accusatory gaze toward Marvin. He'd lost enough team mates. He didn't need someone distracting any of the current ones right before battle began. Distraction all too often meant death on the battlefield.
Yep...That's Texas in a nutshell. Why just say "f**k you" when you can put it on a flag?

"No, it's okay. I wasn't paying attention." Michiko sniffed, her voice still odd. Marvin didn't have a chance to say anything before the series of bumps and slight commotion caused him to turn away from Michiko. The new guy, Wales something, was being helped by Terrace Manosk, one of the older Team 3 pilots Marvin vaugely knew, who said something Marvin didn't quite catch, as did Wales. "Are you okay? I guess we're all having trouble since the gravity was switched off," Michiko gave a thin smile, which struck Marvin as forced, but given the way she was, Marvin wasn't sure about that.

"I think I'll head for the cafeteria now..." Wales said, looking as if he was passing out, glancing up and down the hall.

Marvin quickly understood what he was looking for, or thought he did. "Uh, there should be a lift grip just at that corner." He said somewhat weakly, pointing down to the next intersection past the one Wales and Terrace had emerged from.

"What's wrong, Michiko?" A voice came from behind him. Marvin turned again, this time to see Jacob glaring at him, prompting another wave of panic to hit Marvin. "Are you ok? Did someone hurt you?" He continued to ask Michiko. Marvin gave a quick, nervous shrug and kept his mouth shut. He once again noticed how hungry he was as his stomach rumbled loudly again. Jesus, what next... He quickly thought to himself.

"Sure. What's up, Sophie?" Eddie had replied after pausing his music. She'd meant to ask him what era the music was from, and what band it was, but there was time for that later.

"Well," Sophie began as she floated over to a chair to Eddie's right and sat in it. "How do you... uh..." she paused for a moment and took a breath, "When you sortie, how do you deal with the fact that somebody you care about is on the ship and you have to focus on the mission despite the fact that they may come under fire and you can't be there to protect them."

With a sigh she tucked her hair behind her ears. It was getting longer now and she hadn't even thought to trim it back to a shorter more manageable for space length. "Is this the burden of relationships on a warship?"

"..huh yeah..sure, just bit tired is all, i'll be right.. i think i'll head for the cafeteria now..." Wales said in response to Terrace's question.

"I guess we're all having trouble since the gravity was switched off," Michiko added.

Watching Wales grab for a grip, Marvin chimed in "Uh, there should be a lift grip just at that corner."

"Thanks," Terrace said for Wales, "I think I'll give him a hand over to the mess and grab some coffee myself."

Moving to take hold of Wale's hand he guided him to the grip. "Come on, lets get you caffeinated."

Sophie floated over to a nearby chair and sat down. "Well, how do you... uh..." She took a breath, "When you sortie, how do you deal with the fact that somebody you care about is on the ship and you have to focus on the mission despite the fact that they may come under fire and you can't be there to protect them. Is this the burden of relationships on a warship?" She finished, adjusting her hair.

"Pretty much." Eddie stated flatly, dropping the battered paperback he'd been reading on the couch next to him and cracked his knuckles as he thought for a quick moment. "I guess it's like combat in general. I mean, everyone has someway or something that helps them get through all this s***, you just find something that helps ya deal with that it's outta your hands..." He trailed off and shrugged. "I just think that we've got a hell of a good crew and a great, tough ship. I've got my job, she's got hers, and why worry 'bout it when neither of us can control it all? I guess after all this time, I just stopped thinkin' about it." Eddie gave a weak sigh and shrugged again, but quickly reverted to his usual grin and happier tone. "But hey, that's how my f***ed up mind deals with it."

Michiko's blush deepened as Jacob approached when she realized how much attention she was getting right when she wanted it least. "What's wrong, Michiko? Are you ok? Did someone hurt you?" Markado asked protectively, casting a severe glance at Marvin who just shrugged feebly as he was suddenly put on the spot. She shook her head and said quickly, "No, I accidentally bumped into Marvin and he was just trying to be nice...". She blotted at her eyes again with the back of her gloves and half-explained, "I just... I feel so stupid... I'm making things hard for myself and Fritz...". She didn't care about the stupid rumors passed around by the crew any more. Fritz may have been right to not want to deal with their situation right before a combat operation, but she couldn't keep acting like she was perfectly happy and content.

- Ready Room 2 -

Fritz opened the door to Team 2's lounge and ready room and stopped in his tracks as he entered. "Am I in the right place? I can hear myself think," he said, raising an eyebrow at the total lack of music. He gave a friendly nod to Sophie and waited for Eddie to finish his answer before he stepped into the conversation. "Eddie, there's something up," he began, glancing over at Sophie before he decided to just go ahead and say it, "The Zeon moved Axis - we mentioned it in the last couple of updates in the briefings. Well, they didn't do it to keep it away from the battle like we guessed,". He sighed and continued directly, "They're trying to use it to hit Granada because we're coming for Gryps 2,". Fritz crossed his arms and shook his head, "I've been told Bright and Char have a plan to stop it, but it relies on Maelstrom going off without a hitch...".
