Re: Sherlock Season 3

For ep two was too much set on comic relief and silliness, and the mystery itself was pretty light. It wasn't bad, but it was the weakest link. I also agree with Dark Duel in the general feel that the third season was weakest of the three. Again, not bad, just the least best. :D I suppose the show's...

Re: Ender's Game movie

Got to watch the movie, finally. Knowing all that I did about Card's opinions. That being said, the movie was slightly above average. In a classic movie-mode with fast forward over bits that you could tell were better fleshed out in the book (or so I would expect; I haven't read them). I kinda reali...

Re: The Official Sign In/Out Thread

Don't sweat it too much, we can be the crotchety old guys of MAHQ together. Despite some falling-out moments myself, there is still some good anime for the old(er) fan to appreciate. Oh definitely! I didn't mean to come across as (pretending to be) too old . :D This site, anime in general, and its ...

Re: General Fanfiction Discussion 2: Electric Boogaloo

Dauym, reading this stuff made me wanna go back to rewriting my GSP fanfic to the end. I got over two thirds done, but then started to run out of time more and more often due to other work, and I just realized I haven't done anything to it in three months. Maybe time to spend a half hour each night ...

Re: What books are you reading?

Classics that I got for Christmas:
Ursula Le Guin The Dispossessed,
Olaf Stapledon Star Maker,
Roger Zelazny Lord of Light.
Yes, I'm going for the Classics (of SF) in a big way this spring. :D

Re: The Official Sign In/Out Thread

I haven't been back for about 6 months. This is due to the unfortunate distance growing between my own preferences and generic anime shows. With the exception of AoT, I haven't watched any new anime series (I've revisited some old ones I have on DVD). I have watched the movies or remake-movies (Bers...

Re: Pacific Rim the movie (2013) - Guillermo del Toro

Actually, now that I've seen the movie three times, it gets a little less awesome. As you would imagine, of course. You get to experience the coolness of the flying Kaiju unfurling its wings only once. The acting and the dialog between the fight-scenes is a little less convincing when you're no long...

Re: [Rambling] - What is Translation?

This was a pretty good read, in fact. :) Being a philologist, the first paragraph already nails the issue of translation. I also recall from back in the day of less talented translators, when Monty Python came on the telly, the translator actually gave up, offering instead of a translation a simple ...

Better. Still using a lot of time with babbling, instead of awesome-flying-and-cutting.
Spoiler
The female titan was a bit surprising, though. And she looked a lot like Annie?

Re: Latest movie thread.

Right after being psyched about Pacific Rim yesterday, I done gone and ruined my high with World War Z , which, for a person who read and liked the book, was disappointing as a movie. Sure, I might come off as a hoity-toity "oh the book was so much better " aficionado of in-depth storytell...

Re: What books are you reading?

Recapped a classic, Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End and started with a new series by K.J. Parker over the holidays. I'm done with The Color of Steel , heading to The Belly of the Bow . Parker's style of fantasy writing couples magical realism and humor quite nicely. It's not Pratchett, but still ...

Re: A Typical Episode of Gundam Seed Destiny

Ooooooh the CE references still... so... good. :D (From behind Athrun, RAU LE CREUSET, NEO ROANOKE, REY ZA BURREL, and GILBERT DURANDAL all appear. Shinn's eyes widen in shock.) SHINN: What the-?? REY: Yes, we are all Chars, Shinn. NEO: (Looks around) Oie, oie, there were a lot of us in Cosmic Era. ...

Re: Attack on Titan

I'm hopping, skipping and rolling over most of the stuff here, since I'm three eps down thanks to a holiday abroad. I did watch 14, though, and it's revitalizing my hopes that the series will get back up to speed after the swamp-slog that was eps 9-12 in my opinion. Looking good again! I didn't like...

Re: Pacific Rim the movie (2013) - Guillermo del Toro

Both thumbs up for the unquestionable popcorn summer blockbuster of 2013! It's a rare treat for me to be this entertained at the movies, throughout the movie. Pacific Rim doesn't much require you to think, but hey, it's about giant mecha smacking down with godzillas. I had been carefully hopeful, an...

Re: Valvrave The Liberator

I'm 27 and several times in Valvrave I wondered how I would have reacted were I still a teenager. That's not a bad thing necessarily but it does mean some of the themes came across as not for me. One in particular was the recurring 'world of adults' talk. There's general truth to it but you can tel...

Re: Attack on Titan

Herself. And that's the thing; she does not have anyone or anything else to focus on/worry about/cry out after. There also a degree of uneven returns on these attentions she gives to Eren. It doesn't have to be anything else to be so obsessively focused on (because that just transfers the issue), bu...
