Why would they essentially make a mass produced core fighter? It doesn't have any impressive armament compared to say, a G-Fighter, Corebooster or even the later Corefighters.

Nope. RX-44...or RTX-44. It's been mentioned in some timelines and apparently the RTX-440 is based off it.
