Re: Topic Submission Thread MK III
Hi there, Longtime fan of the show here. This probably wouldn't warrant a whole conversation, maybe a news item, but I thought you guys might want to check out my short sci-fi film, which is directly inspired by 80s mecha anime. It's littered with references to various shows, see if you can spot the...

Re: My indie sci-fi film: "c"
Thanks!
One easy thing you could do to help would be to vote up my submission to BoingBoing.net; http://boingboing.net/submit/2011/02/in ... ilm-c.html
Getting it featured there would make a huge difference!

My indie sci-fi film: "c"
Hello, I'm a big mecha fan, and am currently attempting to produce my own sci-fi movie. I wanted to share a new trailer for it with you guys: http://vimeo.com/19954125 In tribute to the classics of the 1980's, the movie is being shot without CGI or greenscreen, relying on models and in-camera effect...

Re: What books are you reading?
Just finished The Forever War, by Joe Haldeman. Excellent Vietnam-era sci-fi novel about interstellar war, relativistic physics, power armor, culture shock as a result of the "twin paradox," love, loss, and so on. Basically an anti-war response to Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Thought it w...

Re: Equivalents of nuclear weapons for ship-to-ship combat?
That makes sense, but surely there must be some other type of large explosion possible in space, then, that could be weaponized...? I am no expert on supernovas or how they work, but could a similar force be conceivably reproduced on a smaller scale and used in a type of bomb? A Genesis-like weapon ...

Equivalents of nuclear weapons for ship-to-ship combat?
So we all know the part in Char's Counterattack where Londo Bell bombards Axis with nuclear missiles. This got me thinking about the possibilities of using "nuclear weapons" (or their equivalents, for reasons I'm about to go into...) in ship-to-ship combat, instead of just against larger t...

If you are including the Brockray that came with the SoC Xabungle you migh as well include the Duran that came with the SoC Walker Gallia. Aoshima has also released a GoShogun and Zambot 3. The kits Yuusha Tokkyu Might Gaine are thinking of also come from Aoshima. And I'm not even going to start wi...

I'm not sure if these fit the bill if you're looking for user friendly (not that some of the ones listed above nessicarily fit that bill either)... If that's the case, could you let me know which ones? I don't have much personal experience with these kits, all I can do is rely on what I hear. The i...

Modern model kits of vintage, non-Gundam shows
Gundam is definitely over-represented in terms of new model kit releases with modern, user-friendly engineering (better proportions, snap-fit assembly, proper colors, etc.). A lot of us don't have the stamina or skills to deal with vintage kits, so it's too bad newer kits for the less-popular classi...

Another great episode, guys, thanks! This was a blast to listen to. I thought I'd weigh in with my own two cents on one of the opinions expressed towards the end of the call-in session; one caller asked you guys to comment about Tomino's tendency to include manipulative, vindictive female characters...

... Real vs. super has more to do with how the mecha are treated than with their actual abilities... Gundam, though it's credited with inventing the real robot genre, has been solidly on the fence throughout it's history. Though the grunt mecha -- the Zakus and the GMs -- are solidly real robot, bu...

The "Real" vs "Super" distinction
So I've heard a lot about how these two terms originated from Super Robot Wars and that this supposedly makes them unfit as categories for mecha shows themselves. What I'm wondering is, are these terms actually used in Japan for the purpose of differentiating between subgenres, or is it an invention...

I've seen the whole show, it's great, and I would love to own it on DVD. I really don't feel there's any point in buying the individual volumes if I can't get the whole series, though. It's not inconceivable that a thinpack or other box set will be released sometime in the future, so I'm holding out...

There's another way to think about the last episode of 08th MS Team that may be interesting. 08th MS Team's original director, Takeyuki Kanda, was also the director of Vifam-- a mecha series about young children lost in space, surviving on their own against the backdrop of a brutal war. As we all kn...

Galactic Drifter Vifam
Ginga Hyouryuu Vifam, "Galactic Drifter Vifam" (also known as Round Vernian Vifam, the official english title). This 1983 Real Robot show has designs by Kunio Okawara, original concept by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and was directed by Takeyuki Kanda (he also did Mellowlink and Dragonar, and died tr...

Petition to publish LoGH novels in english
Stumbled across this, thought I'd share. Maybe it's a doomed effort, but at the very least it's a good way to show your support for Legend of the Galactic Heroes!
